Y'all. I'm blubbering like a baby. I was already very familiar with both Tim and Chuck's stories but this was some God timing. I love every episode but this one will be shared with EVERYONE I know. The opioid epidemic hit my life hard - to the point where I will tolerate about any pain but won't take those. And my journey to WFPB mirrors Tim's on SO many points. Doctors: "Natalie you will be in a wheelchair the rest of your life. You must stop all weight bearing activity." I get home and throw away all medication so I can die cuz no. Got on Netflix and it recommended Fat Sick and Nearly Dead and then Forks Over Knives out of the blue. (2013) 2014 I did my first 5k with my daughter. "THERE'S ALWAYS HOPE. YOU'RE NEVER TOO FAR GONE." Chuck and Tim, y'all are heroes to me. 💕💕💕💕💕

WOW!!! What an incredible story of overcoming adversity by defying the doctors who said he'd be in a wheelchair and instead, running ultramarathons!!! I was glued to my chair for this epic, as you put it Chuck, 🤩🤩🤩story. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Brought me to tears! I have EDS also. And my joints hurt too, but the bigger issue is oral food allergies that make me choke, EOE and gastroparesis all from EDS. It’s all such a process. But I’m sticking to low fat whole plant foods which also helps with my T1.5 diabetes. This story was so inspiring! I will ramp up my walking and add a third gym day. Probably no marathons but I can do more!

WOW, WOW, and WOW! Was this ever a powerful episode! I've never been a drug addict; I've never been obese; I've never had major health issues. But I was lucky enough to have stumbled into eating whole-foods, entirely plant-based, with no oils, very low fat, low sodium, and low processed sugars, and I tell people that it's one of the Top 5 best things I've ever done for myself. I've been at it for about four-and-a-half years now. So when I see an episode like this, and hear Tim Kaufman's story and how much this new way of eating means to him and what it's given him, it made me cry -- of which the tears were from thinking how special this way of eating is and what it has done for all of us who have adopted this way of consuming food. We're all in a very special club together. 😃(NOTE: I only wish Chuck would have gotten Tim to go into detail how on earth he ever weaned himself off of some of the most potent opioids known to man. Good gracious, that must have been grueling.)

I'm not the crying type, but this episode brought tears to my eyes. The openess of both of you about addiction. The wheelchair message Tim got at age 20. How doctors in the USA prescibe opioids as if it were paracetamol (I'm from Europe, doctors here only prescribe opioids in very extreme situations, to reduce pain at the stage the patient is about to die). Both of you describe exactly how addiction works. Let no-one ever say that food cannot be an addiction. Chuck I think there is no one who could host this channel better than you, you relate to so many of the guests. I think that very often when listening to you , time to write it in the comments 🙂 Thank you ❤

WOW, WOW, WOW. I have heard Tim's story in the past as well as Chuck's, but this Exam Room recording was just incredible. I'm still not sure of the condition that Tim has, but it is a miracle that he is running, climbing and beating all of the odds that were in front of him. Overcoming both food and drug addictions is no small feat, but being able to change his lifestyle...well, it is truly God's hand in his life. May you keep on going and never give up hope. I love the Exam Room podcasts, and this one has been so inspirational I'm sharing it with my friends. Chuck and Tim...ya'll are Rock Stars!

Good listening. Tim is such an inspiration. His story is amazing. I have been following Tim and Heather for years. I fell off the wagon and am back on again. This video appeared at just the right time. I get discouraged but Tim has given me the push I need to keep on trucking.

I'm blown away by Tim's story. It takes so much courage to turn around a tricky situation like that. I am just wondering what happened when he went on the juice detox, given that he was on so many prescription medications and drinking at the time? I've had issues with painkillers, too, although nowhere near as heavy, and any attempt to change my diet has made me feel so sick. Did he just stop his opiate medications and vodka cold turkey? I can barely imagine what he must have gone through initially.

This is very emotional, my father went through the same kind of addiction, just that the familial structure wasn't there, and it eventually killed him this year. He and i became homeless during the lockdown and couldn't get back up on our feet. I had 4-8 years of effort and work, conditioning and eating well all thrown away in a single night in 2020.

Incredible story! Can you please do episode on air fryers, there are articles that process of air frying does result in the formation of certain compounds, like acrylamide, that are linked to cancer development. On other hand, it's less oil. Please help to decide if I should buy one. ❤❤❤❤

How about swimming, Mr. Kaufman? Your story is inspiring. I just have to lose about 20 kg, and due to the wrong fake brand shoes that I wore and also the extra weight that I am bringing along after quite a long term of Tuberculosis medication (I guess being overweight is one of the Tuberculosis medications?) and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, it seems I'm having fallen arch problem (was diagnosed with tendonitis) and slowly affecting my knees and also my back bone especially my waistline site. Of course, there are so many stretch marks. All the best

We had a computer lab tech in community college that would eat a large pizza and drink 2 liters of pop for his lunch. He weighed in at 650 pounds when I knew him and he broke a few chairs. Taxis had to be old cars with more room and he walk 20 yards take a flight of six to eight steps and then plop down on an outdoor bench. Next stage walk 100 feet into the building and then the computer lab and lean his back against the counter and slide to yhe floor to catch his breath again. Then final 20 yard to his desk. Unfortunately he got help too late and died in his 30s. His brother who ate healthier was merely chubby but had a sex addiction and died about the same time (aids?).The brother said the heavier brother would not eat anything healthy even prepared for him. I worked with another guy that would come with us for Italian Beef in LaGrange, Illinois and then return to the office and eat the lunch the wife had prepared. So I got to see some of that eating extra food. He might of been 300 pound and it sounded like his struggles took him up and down the weight scales. The latest coworker with food addiction got down to a normal weight but would help himself to nuts I bought for my self, not just a handful, but several and I suspect he ate an entire cake left in the refrigerator for a party the next day. Back about 1980, a steak house chef had a similar experience of being too heavy for a heart transplant at Loma Linda Hospital were they put him on a diet and after losing the weight he no longer needed the surgery. He return to his job as steak house chef in Barstow, California. We had two telethons to raise money for him, second one made national news. My curiosity has me wanting to call the steak house and see if kept the excess weight off.

So true about the Taco Bell stuff. I would go to different taco bells so I didn’t hit the same locations night after night. And if I got 2 meals I would always get 2 different types of drinks. I wasn’t fooling anyone.
