Across the United States, monkeys and other nonhuman primates are suffering in houses, garages, and backyards, where they are held in cruel captivity as "pets." Gambit, a five-year-old rhesus macaque, was one such animal. Taken from his mother as a tiny baby, Gambit lived his entire life as "pet" in a private home, confined to a parrot cage and without the chance to interact with or even meet other monkeys.
In July 2021, all of this changed when Gambit's "owner" surrendered Gambit to Born Free USA. Born Free USA operates one of the largest primate sanctuaries in the United States, home to hundreds of monkeys, many of whom were rescued from roadside zoos, retired from animal experimentation, or, like Gambit, are former pets. Now at the sanctuary, Gambit will receive high quality medical care, nutritious food, room to roam and explore in a natural setting, freedom from unnecessary interactions with humans, and, crucially, the chance to socialize with other monkeys.
