Across the United States, monkeys and other nonhuman primates are suffering in houses, garages, and backyards, where they are held in cruel captivity as "pets." Kiki, a five-year-old vervet monkey, was one such animal. Taken from her mother as a tiny baby, Kiki lived her entire life as "pet" in a private home, confined to a cage and without the chance to interact with or even meet other monkeys.
On June 9, 2021, all of this changed when Kiki's "owner" surrendered Kiki to Born Free USA. Born Free USA operates one of the largest primate sanctuaries in the United States, home to more than 400 monkeys, many of whom were rescued from roadside zoos, retired from animal experimentation, or, like Kiki, are former pets. Now at the sanctuary, Kiki will receive high quality medical care, nutritious food, room to roam and explore in a natural setting, freedom from unnecessary interactions with humans, and, crucially, the chance to socialize with other monkeys.
Watch and share Kiki's epic journey from life as a pet to life at Born Free USA's primate sanctuary and follow Born Free USA on social media to keep up with Kiki's ongoing journey of healing. To support Kiki and enable Born Free USA to rescue more monkeys in need, please make a donation at bornfreeusa.org/kiki.

Born Free USA works to ensure that all wild animals, whether living in captivity or in the wild, are treated with compassion and respect and are able to live their lives according to their needs. We oppose the exploitation of wild animals in captivity and campaign to keep them where they belong - in the wild. Born Free USA's Primate Sanctuary is the largest in the United States and provides a permanent home for approximately 400 primates retired from animal experimentation or rescued from zoos and private ownership.
