Former NFL RB Rashard Mendenhall responds to his black vs white tweet & clears air of a decade of torment from Super Bowl play
“I don’t know if there is a more attacked player in the modern era than me….I open my phone and I’m being reminded of a moment every day, that shit feels like Chinese water torture, a little ping over and over and over again. When they say football is what you do not who you are, I don’t believe that, I feel like who and what we did under that helmet, sticks with you, that animal, that monster and for me it was a Samurai. It’s not the play, I played a million plays, I did the best I could, I’ve let go of the play, it’s how I’ve been treated since that I don’t feel like is fair and I finally had enough.” Rashard Mendenhall opens up about his fumble in Super Bowl 45 in today’s conversation on The Pivot.
As we end a year, we are reminded that some of us carry burdens with us that we know nothing about and until we are able to open up and release it, the thought and feeling torments us. For former Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall, it’s one play he feels has cast a shadow over everything else he’s done in his career on and off the football field. In a heavy but necessary conversation, the guys create a space for a tough but instrumental discussion about life, letting go and owning up to a mistake.
Ryan and Fred sit down with Rashard for a conversation that got to the root of recent controversial comments made by the Steeler great, focusing on how one moment in the running back’s career has caused a decade of torment.
Super Bowl 45 saw Ryan and Rashard’s Pittsburgh team fall to the Green Bay Packers, and the crew discussed how Mendenhall’s fumble played a crucial part in that game and his life beyond it.
Last week, Mendenhall made waves in the NFL media world with a Tweet that seemed to pit a potential all-white player team and all-black player team against one another.
Fans, players and personalities alike ran with the concept and made the hypothetical scenario become a little more real with debate and discussions, without the true context of why he said what he said and the root of it all.
Ryan and Fred point out that NFL players are constantly in the public eye and there needs to be a disconnect from the media at times as it can have personal implications. Just last week Jonathan Owens and The Pivot team received scrutiny for the comments about Jonathan’s wife Simone Biles, yet as the hosts know, outside talk can always be insensitive as celebrities become a canvas and the guys reiterate how much love is between the young couple and encourage people to open minds to what’s reality vs what a false narrative creates.
The situation in Denver has another player under the microscope as Russell Wilson has been benched by the Broncos, and the guys talk about Sean Payton and how Russ deserved better. Ryan isn’t shy about his thoughts on Payton’s moves from day one and how not only is it unprofessional but disrespectful in today’s game.
One thing is certain, and it is that Freddy T is getting some of the love he deserves. Taylor was named a modern-era finalist on the upcoming ballot, but as Kobe says, “the job’s not done.”
From our Pivot Family to yours, Happy New Year and we are ready for a full 2024 that’s going to be our best yet!
New episodes drop on Tuesdays at 12 p.m. ET and Fridays at 3:30 p.m ET on KZfaq, with audio available on all streaming platforms including Apple, Spotify and Amazon.

This dude is hurting. I hope whatever complex issue he is facing, he gets the help he needs. Seems like he has made a good life for himself after football, but he has this weight on him. He has to let go for himself, family, and his friends. I'm glad he's able to have this conversation on this podcast, as it may help people to reach out to try and help him. I get some people are going to call him mentally weak. It's not weak to seek help. Its weak to always think you can do things on your own and not ask for help when you really need it. I have that problem of asking for help when I need it. Good conversation that maybe many of us can learn from

@@MTMJPodwthewife you could tell that Rashard was hurt from the comment, but I think you could see some of this pain this man has been feeling, he was able to release some of it with the apology. It's great to see people be able to look someone eye to eye and tell them that hey this affected me in a certain way. It's better than holding on to this and letting it fester. Good on Ryan for apologizing and these men working through it.

I am reaching out to you as someone who has not only followed your career with great interest but also admired your extraordinary contributions to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Today, I feel compelled to express my deep appreciation for your efforts, especially in light of the Super Bowl and the discussions that followed. I want to make it unequivocally clear: without your incredible talent, dedication, and hard work, the Steelers would not have made it to the Super Bowl that year. Your performances throughout the season were nothing short of remarkable. You were a driving force behind the team's success, and your ability to turn games around was key to our journey to the Super Bowl. Football, in its essence, is a team sport, and the outcome of any game, including the Super Bowl, is the result of collective effort. It is unfair and unrealistic to place the weight of a game's outcome on the shoulders of one player. Every play, every game, is a tapestry woven from the efforts of all the players and coaches involved. Your journey to and during the Super Bowl was inspiring. You played with heart, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. These are the qualities that define a great athlete. Your role in getting the team to the Super Bowl was crucial, and this is a fact that stands tall amidst any discussions of the game's outcome. Reflecting on that season and your performance, it is evident that your impact went far beyond the statistics. You inspired your teammates, uplifted the fans, and brought an undeniable energy to the game. Your contribution to the Steelers and to football is immeasurable and deeply valued. I write this letter to remind you, and perhaps to remind all of us, that your legacy is not defined by a single game or moment. It is defined by the journey, the battles fought, the victories achieved, and the inspiration you provided to countless fans. You are a true testament to the spirit of the sport, and your role in taking the Steelers to the Super Bowl will always be remembered and celebrated.

Will someone involved in the Pivot Podcast please get this message to this guest. He needs to read this over and over again to drown out the negative voices and stories surrounding that ONE play. He needs to be reminded there are more people like this who still see beyond that play and will always remember the Man who happens to play the game of football at an elite level.

Okay but go back on Ben’s pick six in that game….his arm was batted at the line of scrimmage and Mike Wallace had a step on his man (remember Wallace was burning defenders all of 2010) It was 7-0 and if Ben gets all of that throw it’s easily 7-7 instead of 14-0….momentum was all Green Bay after that pick six….

As a Steelers fan, I always felt like you could only blame the man so much for the fumble. People forget that Rashad really helped carry the offense through Ben's suspension. Without him they aren't even in the position to be a playoff team and thats the damn truth. The man is hurting and this fan base should be better then beating a man down. Ben wasn't great in that game, playcalling was shit, so how can you solely blame this man. I truly hope he knows the opinions of a few don't represent the sentiment of the majority. Blessings and prayers for this man and his family I hope he can find peace thst he deserves. I just get physically damn sick to see people attacking this man, especially in relation to the color of his skin. Just ignorant and stupid we got far too many damn issues man to be attacking others.

And some how people can't understand this no matter how many times he lays it out. He doesn't have a problem with the play. It's the constant blame and attacks no matter what he's done since or before that, and the inability to actually confront the people. He, like many athletes, is used to either physically or verbally being able to confront or silence anyone who has something to say about them.

This is also the first time I've watched The Pivot. Ryan Clark is the captain. He combines intellect, honesty, compassion, positivity and courage like few can do. He calls it like it is and makes it real. He'll call out Rashard and Sean Payton equally and artfully. And Fred is raw and real and adds a caring sensibility to the show. I'll be adding this to my podcast list.

I remember really loving rashard and he was obviously more than just a ball player. He’s a smart dude. The punks harassing him got nothing. Rashard using his brain to go beyond the game is what it’s all about. I have to young athletes in my house. They’re passionate about competing but I tell them you gotta have something else. Music, books, art, anything.

I really do hope Rashard can ignore people(cancer) of social media that just bring negativity & tear people down. Good luck to Rashard & your family on your future. I hope this was good for you to share & I thank you for sharing. Another great interview guys. Missing Chan, just there being Chan in this one, though.

Great episode. I can see the pain in the man’s eyes and heart. Hopefully he can learn to let go of the pain. And don’t let trolls on twitter get to him the way they have. I remember watching him in college and the pros. Dude was sick. Thanks for using the platform to educate people of all colors. Keep up the good work fellas

First off I want to say congratulations Freddy T well deserved 🏈🏈🏈 & great advice to the brother. We never know how a person is feeling until they explode. He had had enough & he said what he said. Like Fred said it’s a losing battle. People talk real big on social media! You have to learn how to disconnect if it’s taking you there. The bullies will never die. This is what they live for & when they start in on your children then it takes you to a whole other level. I’m glad you got some freedom. Great fun loving interview with Mr & Mrs. J. Owen’s young love ❤️ & people tried to turn it into something ugly. Sad!😔

I can feel his hurt and RC, thank you for being the man that you are. He needed to hear that apology. Certainly you're not the reason for his hurt, and it's easy to dismiss armchair quarterbacks, but having a teammate also "validate" the comments he's been hearing made it rough. I know writing is his outlet, and knowing he pinned alot of ballers is incredible, but it's not enough. He's still hurting, and I pray that he's able to talk with someone and release this monster that's been heavy on his back. May God continue to Bless this podcast and all that is associated with it.

This was a very painful interview to watch! I am a Steelers fan because of Mike Tomlin and how the Rooney family carries themselves in this game; i.e., the Rooney Rule. Can’t imagine how this man has been carrying this load for nearly 13 years. 😢 Let’s pray for him. He needs to forgive himself and lock in on faith, his self and his family. 🙏🏿

I see he's hurting I hope he gets through this because that one play can't tarnish his history and its sad people throw that one play at him BIG Ben threw a couple pics a couple of passes got past the CBS AND SAFETYS its not on him I'm praying for him to heal and get to his best life

As a hardcore steelers fan this one hit different. As a steeler fan who has most definitely put basically all the blame of that loss on him (not publicly or in his comments or anything of that nature) I can truly say I apologize. It’s very tough seeing one of your favorite teams players hurting so bad and not having the answers to fix an issue that WE AS FANS have created and made it much bigger then it ever needed to be. One play doesn’t define a player nor define the Super Bowl loss. Was it a big play? Yes. Was it the only reason we lost? Not even close. Wishing mendenhall the best and nothing but love, prosperity and growth for him. As a Steelers fan we stand with you. You didn’t deserve any of this and we as fans need to stop being so quick to tweet and we need to sit back and think about what we wanna say before we say it. Athletes are HUMANS and I think a lot of us forget that especially in the bad moments.

This was a powerful episode as it allowed Rashad to thoroughly explain his thought process behind the tweet and have an open and honest conversation with two solid brothers with good hearts. My prayer is that he can move forward and not look back on the pain of yesterday. I also pray that he has an opportunity to sit down with a solid therapist to continue to put words to his pain. I wonder what would have come of him posting every message that he received from those lame thumb thugs who had the audacity to give their two cents rather than publishing the tweet he chose.

It's not many steelers RBs I remember. Jerome Bettis, who had a crucial fumble. Willie Parker, Leveon Bell and Mendenhall. Mendenhall was a beast. He a had a rumble at crucial part in a super bowl, just like many QBs RBs WRs had turnovers during the super bowl. Mendenhall as you know you was a great running back and you are absolutely right. Most of us wouldn't be able to touch your football accomplishments during our most athletic and fit moments. Keep pushing forward my brother.

as an 80 yr old steeler fan i never really focused much on the fumble , and never blamed Rashard for the loss - it takes a team to win and a team as a whole should feel that pain for a loss; and if Rashard feels like the whole of steeler nation either blames or dislikes him i hope he knows that is not true!!! i hate that Rashard feels hate from us!!

I honestly wanted to learn more about Rashard. I know he was on to talk about that incident, but RC usually taps into verbal cues that I think he missed this time. He talked about his two sons, how are they handling the backlash? How is he enjoying fatherhood. He specifically mentioned his Lebanese wife...why? Especially when his comments were devisive, yet his wife isn't black. How is she handling everything? I wanted to learn how he got into writing? Like there was an opportunity to humanize him more.... We didnt need his take on Russ or Simone, we needed more of him. Many blessings to him, hopefully he is able to properly disconnect.
