A Hoarder's Heart

Ай бұрын

On this episode we talk about FORO: The Fear of Running Out. This was a triggering fear that fueled my hoarding disorder: fear of running out of money, of friends, of my stuff that was my past coping mechanism for my anxiety and PTSD. I share 5 tips on how I combat FORO so I don’t surrender into my fears of losing everything!
1). Feel your Fear
2). Gratitude
3). Plan Ahead
4). You’re not Alone
5). Having systems in place

Great topic. I grew up with a father from a poor family, and we always had extra everything around. Then living through 9/11, the housing crash, covid.. it's hard to not go overboard with the stuff.

You offer such great advice and strategies Mrs Heart. You always mention the need to feel grateful and to acknowledge existing abundance, which I think is wonderful. Also, your garden looks so gorgeous with all those colourful summer plants displayed so beautifully.

Just my bills this month, were more that what I get for the month! I'm retired and have a fixed income. In addition, I just got an increase for my rent, and my car insurance is due next month. The little bit of savings I have is shrinking fast. I feel the stress daily. I know that I'm ok now, but I can't continue like this forever.

I am not a diagnosed hoarder, and even I feel fomo. As a child, we constantly ran out of toilet paper. This created in me the need to keep a 3 month supply. People always laughed until the pandemic. But surprisingly enough, I shared some of the supply and now feel a 2 mo supply is sufficient.

I think the feeling of running out of necessities is very human! We are beings that hunted and gathered food and made tools and crafted everything we needed. To have more gave us security in a world where you could get attacked by a bear or something as soon you left your cave/camp/ living space. We probably risked our lives every day to survive. We saved up to survive cold winters. So the ability to get hold of usable resources quickly was very important a long time ago. These days we don’t need this to that extent because like you said; we can just go and buy what we need, so waaaay too much is just unnecessary today. Even though the feeling remains. ❤ However, a good support net, like a savings account if/ when you actually need it is very useful and something we all should have. 🤗

Even if someone hasn't been diagnosed with hoarding disorder, your message on your channel is honestly good for everyone. We all struggle with irrational fears sometimes in some area. I do not have this disorder, but you have helped me for myself in areas and you've helped me to help others. You explain things well and are a great coach! Congrats on 50k! Keep moving forward!

I love your spray paint spot on that square of concrete-pretty. It is genius how you cut the soil in the middle and not the end-I’m definitely trying that. Lastly-a helpful scripture for FORO is Matthew 6:25-32. One of my favorites. Keep up the great work.

I remember vividly when Covid first hit. I was dating my ex bf and his parents were having problems finding toilet paper. I happened to be reorganizing the closet at my parents house in the living room and I found a full pack of the toilet paper without the cardboard roll in the middle. My mom didn’t like it so I took it to his parents house and it got them through long enough to find a big box a week or so later.

Your hydrangeas are very beautiful. Great advice on how to overcome the FORO. I especially liked the idea of having a source book of where you could find help if needed. Even if you don't ever need the information, you can share it with others who do. Pre-planning does help eliminate some anxiety.

for many emergencies.. 72 hrs kit isn't enough.. .for sure w covid that wasn't enough.. I was glad we had a stock up on most things. sad to see many ppl were being greedy, and buying to price gouge to resell things... poorer ppl couldn't get what they needed bc too many ppl were so selfish which I'm sure they had full pantries and wouldn't need to shop for weeks or months np. ya that recession was really bad. we lost our jobs had to rethink about goals... its how we ended up downsizing, and relocating, then upsizing again... to a cheaper place. someplace where we could eventually have chickens and be a tad more self sufficient with more gardens.. every yr we try to expand our gardens...not always the greenest thumbs but we try. covid I didn't panic on most things.. other than cat food.. and ppl food, my family has always bought things in bulk so we always "shopped at home" lol. only cat food and bleach seemed to be an issue...TP ... we have a lot of treeesss if it came to that, cat food still is hard to get at times. had been buying hand sanitizer a yr before it came to canada...in the 90s.. always had some on hand. I'm minimal adjacent bc I do still keep things JIC and try to keep things stocked up. still con't to downsize, declutter... but I also like to shop.. I just try to be more choosy than I used to be. certain things are ok to over buy... like things that get used up but don't expire... shampoos, soaps, TP, cat litter etc. I don't mind crowding a space bc its going to be regained at some point again.

I've often thought this but never commented. The bedroom shot showing both bedside tables pushed me to comment. You were so hard on yourself in the beginning focusing on your hoard. It's a family home and it's not just your stuff. Not trying to dump on your hubby. Marriage is a partnership and he seems to have quite a bit of stuff. And I totally get it he works lot. Just wondering if a team approach would be helpful. Love the channel and all the ways you make me feel included in your journey. You have come along way.❤

My FORO is most triggered by finding "the perfect X..." whatever that may be in the moment; I find something I love/need and want to buy multiples because I know it will be gone/sold out and I won't find it again. Especially if it's on sale, I need to "stock up" because in the future even if I find the same thing it will be more expensive.

NOT everyone had FORO during covid. Many of us are self-sufficient with large gardens and livestock. As others went to stores with empty shelves, I walked into a fully stocked pantry with healthy fruits my own flour, honey, and vegetables , along with eggs and meat supplies.
