Can I give you a different perspective. --------- I saw this in the movie theater when it came out. -------- After the movie, "BIG" and "Splash" I would see anything with Tom Hanks in it. ------ Coming out of the theater I felt like I could be one with all other human brethren on this earth. -------- I needed to be a better human because Forrest showed me the way I should treat others. ------ I could be a better person to all of them and they could do the same toward me. ------ This movie gave me such hope in humanity. It's hard to put into words.

it really does work like that doesn't it my favorite movies and shows have been ones that really grasp my emotions whether I want then to or not forcing me into a state I'm actively resisting but failing to do so.

Pretty much every war, we have a slang word for the enemy. I won't repeat most of them here. We still use the term Jerry cans for our 5 gallon fuel tanks. That was slang for Germans but nobody uses it offensively in the post war era. You'll hear it pop up in Band of Brothers though.

The fact that Lt. Dan's fiance was Asian is another sign that has has made his peace with the past. A lot of vets became bigoted against Asians, even if they weren't Vietnamese.

Nearly ANY girl who is friends with a mentally challenged boy still rules them out as a romantic prospect. Someone to challenge her intellectually, someone with whom to share and give wise council, to be a life partner Jenny was also beauty of playboy model caliber and likely had her choice in men. (often chose poorly). She NEVER ask Forest for a thing. Even raising his child on a waitress job while he (a billionaire) "just felt like running".

Jenny doesn't know what love is, everyone in her youth who should've shown her love was abusive towards her, so she thought being abused was them showing love. It's a very twisted way of thinking which abused people suffer, you think it's normal growing up like that

Jenny went through so much and having Forrest Jr is probably how she got her life together. She didn’t ask Forrest to marry her until she finally felt like she was WORTHY of him, which is so common for survivors of abuse. She was self destructive and in abusive relationships and it wasn’t until she learned to forgive herself that she finally let Forrest in. What always got me about Forrest as a character is with his innocence and pure heart, he loved Jenny so unconditionally was never angry or bitter. His love for Jenny really was unconditional.😭

@@fangirlalliecat Exactly. Jenny was abused, that is implied. And throughout her life, she went from abusive relationship to abusive relationship. Forrest was her rock, although she didn't realize it until she had Forrest Jr. She needed to learn how to love someone before she could realize that she deserved that same type of love. I hate when people get mad at Jenny for running off. She had her demons to fight off.

People often confuse love with attraction . Jenny loved Forrest , she was not attracted to him . She was attracted to men that abused her .

When the movie first came out, I didn't want to see it, but my girlfriend dragged me to the theater. Behind us, were 2 couples, and the wives seemed to be friends, but not the husbands. One of them asked the other husband, "Do you know what this movie as about?" The husband responded with, "I didn't want to come see the movie, but my wife made me. I think it's about some retarded guy." When Bubba died, both the husbands behind us were sobbing. I was in tears myself, as I'd had classmates and friends who came back from Vietnam as cripples, and I'm sure the 2 husbands had classmates or relatives who came back injured or did not come back alive. After I came home, I met a lot of Lt. Dans in college, who came back with missing limbs, and they were all like Lt. Dan, after he made peace with God, and we living to the happiest and fullest of their ability. Again, Thank you for your heartfelt reaction.

She is definitely one of the most complex characters in the film, perhaps _the_ most complex. Another thing a lot of people don't seem to realise is that throughout all those years apart, Jenny isn't trying to hurt Forrest by coming back and leaving again. Deep down she knows she's broken, she knows she's going through all kinds of self-destructive behaviour with no idea where it's taking her nor how to stop it. So even though she needs Forrest in her life and keeps coming back, the last thing she wanted to do was drag him down with her. She even outright tells him as much when she says "you don't want to be with someone like me", or whatever that line is exactly. In the end all her years of unfortunately doing all the worst things possible to run away from facing and dealing with her childhood abuse finally do catch up with her. As is implied by the drug use she got into, including needles, without directly saying it the film nevertheless makes it clear that she ended up being HIV+. Those short lines of dialogue about the doctors not knowing what she had and not being able to do anything about it (also the timeline of this part of the film being now up to the early 80s), it's clear that she developed full blown AIDS well before there was any kind of treatment available. So in its own way, Jenny's character arc also tracks many significant events that happened throughout those same decades as Forrest's arc does, but sadly hers are very much the darker side of things. It really is a pity that many people leave this film with such a negative view on her, they're really missing out on a lot.

I felt bad for Jenny on this watching. When I was younger and saw it, I didn't like her. I think as I've gotten older, my view of her and what she went through has changed. -David

No, I just don't think you paid attention to the movie. He knew and it was shown in the movie before that. He knew when his mom was talking to the principal that he had below average intelligence, he knew when he was bullied through his childhood for it, he knew when the women called him stupid and left with insults- after which he said "I guess Lieutenant Dan figured there's some things you just can't change. He didn't want to be called crippled, just like I didn't want to be called stupid." Etc.

@@popculturallychallenged No i get it, and i used to be that way when i was much younger and just never had the time or even cared about what i considered to be way over-hyped movies such as this, until one time i just sat down to watch it and couldn't even believe what a damn good movie it turned out to be! Anyway it does happen and some people such as myself just never get around to it until our later years in life, and then again some Millennials have already seen it numerous times.
