When this poor woman started crying early on, I was thinking, "Lady, you are going to be destroyed by the time you get to the end of this movie." For what it's worth, I was crying right along with you. I always do watching this movie.

Your wife is an example of what every filmmaker wishes for, to touch the heart of a viewer, to transfer that person from reality into the story of the film, and to make them relate to everything within the film in some way.

RIP Michael Clarke Duncan. He was so good in this role and should have won the Oscar but was robbed. Great reaction guys. This movie breaks my heart every time I see it. One of the comforting things I’ve used to console myself is the fact that John was so ready for this to be all over. He has had to live with the pain and ugliness in the world for we don’t know how long. We really don’t know how old he act was. His scars could lead us to believe that he lived as far back as slavery days. Imagine having to feel that much pain for that long of a time.

Just a quick comment to your intro: "Green Mile" was the most faithful rendition of Stephen King material to the screen, so you are in for a real treat. I hope it doesn't break your heart too much, and that you will rewatch this several times in the future. The filmcraft, the acting, the well-written characters, all the ends pulled out loose that eventually are rewoven back together, the fine storytelling, the way it makes you think and reflect; it's worth returning to this well in the future, though it tears at your heart to do so. If nothing else, it's a tribute to Michael Clark Duncan to see him fill the screen again. Ok; I'm ready to see your reaction now... I think it's a testament to how Paul runs his Mile that the restraint room appears to be rarely used. For it to be a crammed storage room means his Mile stays pretty calm. And actually, by treating condemned men with respect and humanity helps them prepare for the Inevitable, so they leave this world with the right mindset, feeling humility and regret. Executions require the Death Row guards (to carry it out) and the Prison Warden (to oversee things); the chairs are not used by them. It was not uncommon for the jury, who had assessed guilt, to be required to witness the execution; it serves as a check, that jurors are absolutely sure of their finding. Some executions are newsworthy enough that reporters will request attendance, which the warden or governor can grant or refuse. And an invitation is tendered to the victim's family and loved ones to attend, if they wish; sometimes this helps in closure and healing, sometimes not. The condemned man's family may also request attendance, which may or may not be granted, depending on whether they might cause trouble. Percy suggesting the cigar box and batting is just his way of trying to convince Paul that he can behave, so Paul will 'put him out front' to lead the next execution (which so happens to be Del). Some people wonder why Paul covered for Percy after Del's torturous death. I believe it was because Paul did not want there to be ANY impediment to Percy transferring to Briar Ridge. If Percy had been investigated and his job record blackened, Percy might end up stuck at Death Row; Paul just wanted Percy gone ASAP. Percy's uncle, the governor, could whitewash simple negligence, but a full investigation would be harder to minimize. Percy could expect a government job as long as his uncle had political pull, but Percy likely could get stuck at the prison for his vengeful stunt. Coffey pointing out "Cassie, the Lady in the Rocking Chair' is, I think, a clue to how old John Coffey is; not a complete age, but an indication of great age. 'Cassie' is the constellation of Casiopeia, which is immediately adjacent to the North Star. The North Star was a guide to the north and freedom for escaping slaves. Casiopeia was a queen in Greek mythology placed in the heavens by the gods and chained to her throne. Slaves knew her as Cassie, and her chair rocks, because all the constellations in the northern hemisphere circle the North Star over the course of a year; Cassie's chair revolves ('rocks') all around the North Star. It's easier to find Cassie than it is to find the North Star, so 'she' shows the way. I think John Coffey lived on plantations during slavery times, before the Civil War, which by 1935 was a good 60-some years distance from pre-Civil War. How long before, I can't say, but John Coffey was taught to recognize Cassie and knew the name that slaves used for the constellation. John may have been innocent, but John was ready to 'go home' and live the horrors of earthly life for which he mad no shield or filter. Plus, the murdered girls' parents deserved closure, even if the person executed wasn't the person who had committed the crimes. Just as John said "Del the lucky one", John felt his execution was a blessing for him. A mouse in the wild has an estimated lifespan of about one year. Born and raised in captivity, the longest documented lifespan is short of five years. Between 1935 and the year of this film's release (which is supposed to be the film's present) is 64 years. It makes more sense to compare Paul's likely lifespan to John Coffey's, who was at least (given living in plantation slave times) 150 years old and likely much older. One thing not carried from the text to the film is the crimes of Arlen Bitterbuck and Dem Delacroix. I think there was a decision made that they distract from the story, rather than supplement or support it. It was like good Christian Paul treated the condemned like they were held to the ultimate accountability for bad decisions made on their worst day, and that (but for the grace of God) is what could befall any of us. Paul managed Death Row like a rehab for the soul. He treated the condemned, if they allowed it (Wild Billy didn't), with respect and reverence for what was coming. One last thing: Some people wonder if John Coffey was an angel, whether he was magical or something. Stephen King never answered that question, but he DID allow that Coffey's initials (JC) was meaningful. Loved your reaction. I will have to check out some of your other ones. I like the vibe here.

One of the things I LOVE about this movie is that it's a full hour before you learn it has a supernatural side. And then one day, the warden asked why the Green Mile was going through so many lightbulbs.

Stephen King is simply the goat of horror. When he ventured into the drama genre he proved himself to be just a next level storyteller. I've read EVERYTHING that King has ever written. This is the first book and movie that I absolutely bawled my eyes out reading and watching this story and film. He's such a master storyteller. If you ever get a chance watch Delores Claiborne. It's almost inconceivable that the same mind that gave us such a beautiful thoughtful movie as the green mile also gave us the twisted horror of the shining! Whether it be abject terror or heart rending sadness, King is the emperor of emotion!

Misery and The Mist are two excellent SK adaptations. The Mist is directed by Frank Darabont who directed this movie and Shawshank.

I've seen this movie several times and I still cry like a baby during John's execution. Footnote: the same director also did The Shawshank Redemption. Both of these movies have the same feel.

So glad you did this one. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It is an amazing movie that definitely gets you in the feels. I knew this one would get Toni, but to be honest it gets me every time I watch it. Percy is in my opinion one of the most vile and hated characters ever created, and got what he had coming to him. Did you notice that the actor who played the girls father (William Sadler) was also played Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption. Another great Stephen King movie is Misery. It's more of a psychological thriller type movie. Stars James Caan and Kathy Bates. She won an Oscar for this movie.

John Coffey has the same initials as someone in the bible. And his flicker show/execution day song in his head is "I'm in Heaven"

This is possibly one the best movies ever made. When Stephen King wrote it, it was released in serial form, one section came out every few weeks for several months. I don’t remember what Bittterbuck was convicted of, but Del burnt down a hotel, killing 13 people.

It is relentlessly sad. I think what makes it so powerful is that when King wrote the novel he wanted to pay homage to Dickens and publish the novel in installments. So I think there were 6 initial installments and the full paper back was published the next year. What that means is that you have cliff hangers built into the story because remember, it was not one continuous story when published. I think that is why it is like one sad boom after another.

Something a lot of people overlook... The average lifespan of a mouse (like Mr. Jingles) is 5-7 years. Mr. Jingles was first noticed when Paul was around 44 (no telling how old Mr. Jingles was at the time). Paul said that he was 44 when John was executed and was currently 108 (64 years had passed). That means that Mr. Jingles has lived about 9 times his normal lifespan. The average lifespan of a male is around 77 years. Imagine.... if Paul lives for the same 9 times a normal lifespan, he will quite possibly live to be around 693 years old. His Green Mile is very, very long.

I've been meaning to comment this on several "The Green Mile" reactions, but this feels like the most fitting to. I grew up in Mexico, and the first time I watched this movie was back there. The title for this movie in Spanish, translated back to English, is "Unexpected Miracles" and to this day, I feel that the Spanish title is amazingly fitting.

One of my favorite movies was based on a King short story, not scary, but totally fun - it's called "Stand By Me" - it's awesome!

All the REHEARSALS are done with a DRY sponge and they perform at least two rehearsals with a dry sponge for every execution so, muscle memory may make a dry sponge less noticeable, also, as you guys mentioned, the execution can be a very stressful process which could contribute to the missing the dry sponge. Also, as you both said, it is indeed an AMAZING movie, for many, it is one of those rare movies that is a MUST SEE but maybe just once. "Dead Zone" was another Stephen King novel adapted to the screen. Great reaction.

They couldn’t throw water during Del’s execution because for one, the electrode contacts were under clamps & straps and it was the contact on the head under that cap where it was needed. Second, water is a *very* good conductor of electricity so if it did find a charge, it could endanger anyone who came in contact with the water splashed around while the current was on, or, it could have blown the breakers altogether, stopping the execution while he was still alive and in agony. What I don’t understand is why they didn’t just shoot him to end the torture, unless there was a law against execution by firearms at that time.

It used to be that the judge, jury, the victims and victims families, press, and spouses were required to be present at the execution of trials they oversaw. So people who got jury duty ended up having to watch people die. But it was also why jury's for death penalty cases had to be unanimous.

One of my favorite. Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Gran Torino, Men of Honor, and Million Dollar Baby all great movies

If you re-watch or think about the movie again, keep these points in mind. John Coffey is a man who wanders the land seeking to aid/heal those in need, he is wrongly put to death with a crowd watching his death, and lastly his initials are J.C.

I dont know if its hard to react to for copyright reasons or just not a popular one but one of my favorite Stephen King movies is the miniseries Rose Red. It was made for TV so was released in i believe 4 parts originally and then sold on VHS and DVD. There is no Rose Red book but after the series was released some wrote a prequel book called The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer but it was not written by Stephen King. Anyways, it's not something I see people to react to and it would be fun to see. I have a hard time with scary movies but I really like this one. Also it has the actor Julian Sands in it who we sadly learned passed away after being missing since January of this year. Love your reacton to The Green Mile ❤

In real life the guard Brutal and John Coffey are the same height, he walked on what they call an apple box to give the additional height, Bruce Willis recommended Michael Clark Duncan for the role.

They used camera trickery to make Michael Clarke Duncan (6'5) look bigger, but not too much. Hes a little taller than David Morse (Brutal, 6'4) and not as tall as James Cromwell (Warden Hal Moores, 6'7) in real life. He looks huge next to Doug Hutchinson (5'5) and Barry Pepper (5'9) though.

She gave him the Saint Christopher necklace to watch over and protect him. What more can you do but to let someone know they are loved and protected by God. I can’t think of a better gift. Remember when they were walking John to go save Melinda and Wild Bill grabbed his arm? That’s when John saw who he truly was. That’s when John made up his mind to keep the disease in him and pass it to Percy. You were right… two birds, one stone. Back in them days, there was no TV and barely radios that people could afford, so yes, people did come to watch executions for entertainment purposes. But there is (usually) two sides to the witnesses. One side for the family of the one being executed and the other is for the family that suffered the loss. It’s law (at least in Texas) that all executions have to be witnessed on both sides. Now it’s just a couple of each family. One family is on the left of the condemned and the other family is on the right. They are both behind strong glass windows with curtains. Once they have set everything up, they draw back the curtains and proceed. Each family is not allowed to hear what the other one is saying. How’s that for some background!? This was not a book by Steven King but merely a short story he wrote. It was taken and embellished on by someone else. Y’all seem to be such wonderful people. You’re the type of people I wish I could call family!

First time i saw this movie was by accident. It was the year 2000 i was 10 years old i had school the next day but i was up late still watching tv. This movie came on HBO it caught my attention. When John coffey's death came i was crying so bad that my dad came in the room saw me sitting on the carpet infront of the tv. When he realized what i was watching he just sat down next to me. Im 33 years old now and everytime i watch this movie and John's death comes on i cry like i did back then. The fact that the actor Michael clarke Duncan is dead now makes it worse. May he rest in peace.

My grandfather has a brain tumor. He got progressively sicker and dropped so much weight since world war 2. After surgery in the vet hospital and poor care afterwards he died of pneumonia. My dad was 13 then. His mom my dad and his brothers were not the same after that. I wish for all their sakes someone had come to heal my grandfather. The green miles always has reminded me of that.

You have a Very Caring & soft heart of a Wife My Brother not sure if she makes you stronger in her ways but I am sure she is your rock in many others ways then she shows strongness when it comes to showing Empathy & Compassion.

Stand By Me is another great movie based on a Stephen King novella. It was originally called The Body and part of a four novella collection named Different Seasons. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption was one of the other novellas in the same book.

Another excellent (non-scary) movie based on a Stephen King book is Stand By Me. It stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell when they were just kids. It also has a very young Kiefer Sutherland. Well worth the watch!!!

King is NOT a "horror author". He has written some horror, but, there's more that are really NOT horror. Mainly his stories are just about people. Also, he has created his own multi-verse which is really cool
