I've always disliked the movie and just recently read the book. I thought it was brilliant. Forrest is the same character, sort of. In both versions he's a reflection of the world around him. The book, while containing far more outlandish adventures, is much more realistic in respects to the post-war American ethos. People are mean and nasty and their language shows that, so Forrest's does too. He's named after the founder of the Ku-Klux-Klan for chrissake.
