This video will show you everything you need to know about Siem Reap’s different areas. If you are considering a move either from outside Cambodia or from another place in Cambodia, I hope this guide will be helpful. I explore the four sangkats or communes closest to Siem Reap’s city centre and take a look at what each one has to offer in terms of daily essentials like markets, supermarkets, and gyms. Then we go for a little ride around each area and check them out! See what they’re really like on the ground! Which is cheapest? Which has the most expats? Which is the greenest? Which has the best range of restaurants and bars? It’s all here!

Thanks so much for watching; I hope you found the information in this video useful - apologies again for my pronunciation, particularly of Sala Kamraeuk - I can't seem to get my head around that one no matter how many times I ask locals how to say it and then repeat it back to them. Where would you choose to live? We have lived in Svay Dangkum and Sala Kamraeuk, three apartments in each location. I'd like to try Slor Kram next, maybe after our current lease finishes. Tour of our current apartment coming soon-ish. Check out Julia Haw's channel if you haven't already: www.youtube.com/@juliahaw

My wife and I spent 5 months there, stuck during the height of COVID in 2020. We were house sitting for an Australian man in Sala Kamraeuk. It was such a surreal time to be there, we were some of the very few foreigners in town, and so many businesses were closed. We visited Angkor Wat and for two days we wandered the temples completely alone, not a soul in sight. Truly magical.

Thanks for another great video. Really very enjoyable. So much useful information. I am from Canada, so I am hoping to retire somewhere with warmer weather. Thailand and Cambodia come to mine. I realize Cambodia is so much cheaper than Thailand. Are the prices that inexpensive in Phnom Penh as well? One problem I have with moving abroad is moving money to foreign bank accounts. How do handle the two factor authentication required for online banking ? Many thanks for your kind help. Ben

Hi Ben, yes the 2FA is a real pain. We ended up calling our bank and asking them to remove it, which they did. If I had my time again, I would look for a bank that uses an app for 2FA rather than sending a code via SMS. It just seems so backward when they could use a second party app, or even have it built into their own app like the wonderful ABA bank here does. Thanks for watching!

Vancouver Canada where I live, has become very unaffordable for renters. Tho I have a fairly good deal where I currently live. Claire, the current home you are in what was the main reason for that part of Siem Reap? Just wondering from one part to another in Siem Reap, what do you like being near the most, or any from?😊 Also, since you lived in a few places, how was the process of leaving the agreement with the owners/ landlords? Looking forward to more updates with visas, local life/culture for expats... when you can ☺️ 🛺

I think the longer you live here, the less being close to things matters. We both have motos and I can independently get myself wherever I want to be. If you are new to SR and mostly walking, then an area like Taphul with supermarkets and restaurants (the two things you need most often) is best. Now we live in Slor Kram and I like it here because it's quiet and green. WRT leaving apartments, sometimes we left before the term of the lease had ended, and in these instances, we forfeited the deposit. When we stayed the full duration of the lease, we never had an issue having our deposit returned. Landlords understand that people move around as their requirements change and they become more used to living here.

Good morning from just North of Philadelphia! I just sat down with some coffee and was happy to see that you just uploaded another video about SR. I always appreciate hearing about the town and all the tips about living in Cambodia. I haven't been there in 4 years but really hope to come back in the Fall for another visit.. Anyway, I really don't have anything else to say, so I'll sit back, take few sips, and watch the video. Cheers Claire and Jeremy!

Great video Claire , plenty of useful information , I too have lived in both Svay Dangkum & Sala Kamraeuk , love both areas , so easy to travel about Siem Reap , my only complaint presently , is the heat we have all been experiencing lately , looking forward to the rainy season , hope you and Jeremy are doing well , take care , catch you on the next one , Peace

It would be nice to have some rain and some reprieve from the heat. It must be really awful for the older people around town, but they seem to tolerate it so well. Glad you enjoyed the video - thank you for watching!

Very helpful thanks...couple questions if you dont mind. 1. Do you use local currency or US dollars and are credit cards common to use or is there an extra fee applied. 2. Which part would be the most walkable froendly area to reach most things without the need of a motorbike? Thanks :)
@ForRiel
@ForRiel Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. We very rarely use cash but when we do, it's always Riel. For bigger items like rent and even groceries, we use ABA transfer. ABA is the leading local bank. We never use credit cards here. I think for walkability Sala Kamraeuk and Svay Dangkum would be best. Specifically, in Sala K, Wat Bo and Wat Damnak would be best. Svay Dangkum is huge, so it would need to be in the section that is closer to the town centre. I hope that helps!
@jspbipro
@jspbipro Жыл бұрын
@@ForRiel Cool! Will check out those areas. My ATM fees are rebated so guess the easiest would be to access cash that way and then just deposit into an ABA acct to use for local purchases.

@@ForRiel Well, of the many i had fixed and fed, only one is left. I had lived in a nice apt complex in Sala Kamraeuk for a month and there were many property cats. My 1st day i had a visitor sleeping on my bed. $90 a month with AC. Had to move due to being on foot and having to pass a construction site with hungry aggressive dogs to get home. Mornings ok but afternoons were iffy. I have been bitten once and dont wish to repeat. I was surprised Luckys stayed open during covid. They always have minimal traffic.

There are good facilities in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Generally in town you can use the facilities of any of the restaurants or cafes if you buy a drink. There are usually bathrooms in the markets, but they are often filthy.

What is the quality of overall city infrastructure and safety arrangements for electricity, plumbing, safe roads, garbage collection, etc.?
@ForRiel
@ForRiel 5 ай бұрын
Plumbing can be questionable and therefore can be smelly, but we have good water supply that is very inexpensive. Much of the electricity is not earthed, and it's pretty common to get little zaps from appliances. Having said that, outages are becoming increasingly rare. Residents (and landlords) have to opt in for garbage collection, and it's a private service you have to pay for. If you're away from the town centre, the garbage collection company won't service you unless it is worth their while, i.e. several residents opt in.

Yes, there are rideshare apps: PassApp, Grab, and some others. You can choose a small tuktuk or a bigger remork. Online shopping has to be done through a third party. A little fiddly, but very possible.

Unluckywise I spent only 8 days in SR on my last trip. But I found the area around the chocolate garden (Sala Kamraeuk) very quite and peaceful. And a bit further it seems to be almost rural. What I don't know is how far the noise of pub street is spread at night. Due to my age I like to sleep at night🙃

Yes that area around Chocolate Garden is quite lovely. There are some very appealing pockets in Siem Reap, and it's fun to find them. I think Pub Street noise is quite well contained. Once you are a few streets away it isn't an issue. I find it far too loud there. 🙂🙏🛵🍭🍭🍭

I think if there is an issue, it's that apartment buildings are being built with foreign occupants in mind. I hope there will always be enough and a reasonable price for those who need them.
