In this video I share information about teaching in Cambodia. Topics covered include qualifications, acronyms, types of schools, pay, conditions, finding a job, and other bits and pieces as I think of them. Here are some things I forgot to mention:
1. You don't need a degree to teach English in Cambodia whereas you do in Thailand and Vietnam.
2. A 120-hour TEFL qualification is adequate to be employed as an English teacher in Cambodia.
3. Teaching Cambodian students was lots of fun - my students were wonderful, engaged, and happy.
4. I left teaching because of the 6 day week and the big breaks between classes, but the students were awesome.
5. The better the school, the better the resources - reliable photocopiers & printers, in-classroom tech, etc.

Great video; solid information. May I ask, can a person with a teaching certificate and experience as a teacher avoid the TEFL qualification and teach in a language school in Cambodia/Thailand/VN? Thanks.

@@brentbaumgartner1198 I'm not sure about that. Perhaps it depends what you are qualified to teach. You also have the option of teaching in an accredited international school if you are qualified to teach in your home country. I would email a few schools and see what they say. Thanks so much for watching.

Hello from Canada! Would you be willing to do a paid coaching session with me about moving to Cambodia? I have some questions I'd like to ask a seasoned traveler-teacher. I'd be happy to pay you for 45-60 minutes. I'm on Instagram, you can use my KZfaq name to find me and DM me there or if there's another way to connect let me know. My questions are piling up and I want to feel super prepared. I'm happy to pay you before a chat, and if you're too busy I totally understand!

I taught w/out a degree nor tefl in Vietnam for 5 years prior to the covid outbreak. I have a handful of friends who remained in Vietnam and endured the shutdowns and have finally been able to return to their classes(Aussies, S. African, UK and US). Since the lock downs ended in Vietnam there is still some options available for the no tefl/no cert-foreigner with the biggest issue as of late over there the mandatory 1 month border runs to Moc Bai(Bavet) In the smaller towns in Cambodia is there any possibility for foreigners to teach English w/out any certs? Do foreign English teachers get paid in local riel? This video was really informative and great. Thank you very much

One of the people I love and respect is the English teacher. This young Cambodian generation is so lucky. They have native English speakers teach them in their home country. When I was young in Cambodia I did not have this opportunity. I came to America when I was 16 with two years of English studying in a refugee camp. In America I was put in 10th-grade high school and it was so hard for me. I couldn't understand the teacher and textbook due to the language barrier. I studied so hard, finished high school, finished college, became an American citizen, and get a high-paying job. Thinking back, I wish I could learn English at an early age. If I were the parents in Cambodia, I would put my kids in English school just for one reason, English is very important if they want to be successful in their professional careers. A lot of people don't realize that computer science, coding, medicine, filmmaking, business, and engineering use English words. You have to know English.

Yours is an incredible story of determination and succeeding against the odds - thank you so much for sharing. I agree that English is an essential skill and I am hopeful that more Cambodian children can grow up with both languages. There are always pros & cons no matter where we live. Work smart and party hard. Great knowledge to share this as always from For Riel. I've joined the swim instructor team after my early retirement and to teach people how to swim with water safety as Minnesota has over 10,000 lakes. Swimming is my hobby since a little boy. Sharing is caring. Cheers!

I taught at 4 different schools in 3 different parts of Cambodia. PP (accredited international school) has the most options at higher pay, also slightly higher cost of living (not to mention living in the big city is not my fav). Siem Reap (non accredited international school) has a fair amount of schools and lovely setting (the overly long road construction was a huge negative). Kampot (non accredited international school and English only school) only has a handful of schools and the lowest pay, but was my favorite place to live.

Hi Joy, that's really interesting, thank you for sharing. Cost of living is definitely higher in Phnom Penh, and having to commute in the heavy traffic there wouldn't be much fun. Siem Reap has a good range of schools - agree with you about the road construction. We left SR for Kampot after about 12 months living in the construction zone. It became unbearable for us. We very much enjoyed the beauty of Kampot and the surrounding area after being in SR for so long. Great that you could find work in Kampot as like you say, there are few options there. Thanks for watching!

The little girl my wife and I support goes to future bright international school (which she learns khmer, English and other subjects), ace and a Chinese language school and I do note that those 3 are in the same road. @ForRiel Жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, I was in the same position and one of my postgraduate qualifications is in education - I've maintained my teacher registration in Queensland - but they still wanted to see a TEFL. I chose to do the CELTA because it is accepted more widely than the cheaper TEFL ones, and I thought if I was going to bother, I may as well do the course that would allow me to earn the most. It would pay for itself in the first 2-3 months of working in Cambodia. If you're just wanting to have a TEFL as a card up your sleeve, one of the 120 hour courses would do the job just fine. I hope that helps!

Hi Claire 🙂 Im in my late 30s, a resident of California, and have a Bachelor's Degree (Bachelor of Arts). I visited Battambang, Cambodia back in 2007 and I recall how friendly people were. I feel like Southeast Asia is calling my name again 😎 Although I've heard there is greater probability of employment by showing up in person, I feel it's safer to go through a company or agency that provides TEFL certification and job placement. Reason being, if I embark on this journey, it's gonna be a one way ticket 😁 My question to you is how long do you suppose there will still be a demand for foreign English teachers? I know thats difficult to answer but what are your projections? Given that technology and artificial intelligence are rapidly encroaching. Have you heard or seen other expats teach English initially then get into other ventures full time? Im wondering how long teachers typically last until they burn out there on average. Finally, did you ever order from Amazon online and was it even a possibility? I understand importing and supply chain issues will cause delays but if you order something would it arrive at least within a month's time? Thanks in advance, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and content with everyone 🙏 Cheers

Hi Todd, you'll need to get yourself a TEFL either before you arrive or once you get here. The more qualifications you have, the better the school and the higher the pay. You will probably be able to find work (once you get a TEFL), but it might not pay very well as the more desirable jobs will go to people with higher qualifications. There seems to be more competition in Siem Reap, so you might need to consider other locations.

Hi Sarah, some schools pay hourly and some pay monthly. If you're paid monthly, you'll be paid for the break. You'll also be expected to be at the school for the full day. If you're paid hourly, you are only paid for the hours you teach - no paid break. ACE pays by the teaching hour, and their rate for PP teachers is slightly higher than it was for SR. You can't do it on a tourist visa. You need to enter on the E type Visa $35 ( one month ) then get that extended at a Visa agent for one year $290.
