Okay first of all, happy birthday to me. If anyone wants to wish me a happy birthday, sharing the vid through the links that'll be in description is the way to go. :)
With that out of the way… I keep on pushing myself with game vids, but this one is really, REALLY special to me. If you've read my previous BG3 video descriptions, I used to ship Astarion and Shadowheart in EA, but the more I played Astarion's routes in full release, the less he worked for me as a romantic option in general, especially for my favorite character (Shadowheart). Now I’m a weirdo who often looks at other characters through the prism of my fave and what's best for them, and Astarion just… Wasn't it. And then I saw Gale's act 2 scene. And his home in Waterdeep. And this was my like third playthough. xD And basically he and Shadowheart are soulmates for me and you cannot convince me otherwise. 😹
Like if you look at what Shads wants from her future, Gale is just kinda… it. ‘I'd like room for animals. Lots of them, all shapes and sizes, so long as they appreciate a warm fire and more affection than they know what to do with. I want to grow flowers. I want to be surrounded by colors every day. I'm tired of darkness.’
And then literally the first thing Gale says about himself is, ‘I have a cat, a library, and a weakness for a good glass of wine. And if the mood takes me, I'm known to try my hand at poetry.’
Both are well-read, animal and wine lovers, scorned and abused by their goddesses whom they dedicated their whole lives to, and both just actually want a peaceful and quiet life in their good routes so they just… fit to me. I can imagine Shads adding to Gale's plants (and probably picking up every stray cat or injured animal she comes across). idk I can just picture their life so vividly it's probably weird. xD
Which brings me to this vid in general. I knew I was going for ‘Take me to church’ the moment I knew I'll vid them, but I've already used the original song and one cover of it, and I wanted something with both male and female vocals, and eventually I found this mashup which worked even better. I went through 8k of voice lines of both characters so technically some VO are not from my playthroughs (but you bet I was using ‘Mystra was never worthy of your love’ line lmao, also the fact that only through that I've learnt there's a dialog about Morena Dekarios that's bugged in the game... is it still bugged btw?). Then once I had the draft I've spent weeks slightly redoing things, more often than not rerecording them. Sometimes trying to go for a scene with both of them speaking which ofc took redressing them to fit a save from another playthrough and putting them in the same location… Hence the ‘What do you think of the new look?’ dialog which is obviously not possible in the game. I tried to think of any other scene I could redo in the same way but nothing came to mind, if anyone has any ideas - let me know. AND THEN I rerecorded the Waterdeep illusion with different clothes and hairstyles for Shads until I had a look and camera angles which for me were passable for sort of a real epilogue and not an illusion.
...Probably had patch 4 not came along and bugged the game (and free cam) for me, I’d never stop redoing things. 😹 Thank you, patch 4, for allowing me to keep a shred of my sanity. I'm still not 100% happy with this vid, but I probably won't ever be and won't be able to fit every scene and VO I wanna fit for them in a video shorter than like 10 minutes so it is what it is. xD
