As European countries battled to claim territories in America, the Spanish state - which is now known as Florida - became a haven for slaves who ran away from the British colonies. In 1738, a group of these escaped slaves created the first black town, called Fort Mose.
Word spread quickly about the new town, and slaves just north of them created a plan to revolt and make their way to join the freed settlement. A year later, the Stono Rebellion would lead to nearly 100 slaves battling local militia all in the name of freedom. Although While British colonial forces would seize Florida and For Mose would no longer exist, the settlement will always be remembered as the first black town in American history.
In this episode of Black History In Two Minutes or So hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., with additional commentary from Hasan Jeffries of Ohio State University, we will take a look at the slaves who risked it all on a quest to attain the freedom they deserved.
Black History in Two Minutes (or so) is a 2x Webby Award winning series.

As a born and raised Floridian. I am proud of my African, native, and Spanish roots. I was born in Orlando and raised in Sanford, Florida. I currently live in Jacksonville, Florida. I visit forte more as often as I can. I visit Fort Mose’ and pay homage to our ancestors of forte mose’. I am considering trying out for a reenactment role as one of the black soldiers dressed in Spanish guard uniform carrying a Spanish military imperial flag or Burgundy cross defending the city of San Austin. Last year when I visited the site I was told that they are in current reconstruction of the fort mose’ Spain 🇪🇸 did right by our black Floridian ancestors who were enslaved and given freedom by Spain 🇪🇸 Vive Espana!!! 🇪🇸

Long live Spain! Good video but remember that in the 16th century the most powerful empires were Spain and Portugal, not France or England.

Fort Mose was the first place in the United States, where under the Spanish flag, and by order of the Spanish King, enslaved Africans could find their liberty. In this fort, the slaves were given refuge, paid jobs and freedom! Viva España!

Thank you for sharing. It’s interesting how the Fort Mose Website only tells part of the story. It does not mention how or why the Fort was destroyed.

Wow!!! Well done Spain, amazing video. I didn't know about this. This should be taught at school throughout all the US but I guess it won't be done cause there's no interest in talking good things about other country and recognize they did much better than the british or the US.

And yet Spain hypocritically enslaved black Africans themselves. Imagine being a black slave under the Spanish crown in Florida, only to hear about freedom being granted to British slaves.

On July 20, 1500, Queen Elizabeth the Catholic banned slavery in the kingdom. In your country, what year was it? On January 14, 1514, by means of a Royal Decree, King Ferdinand the Catholic legalized mixed marriage between Castilians and indigenous people. I really think that you study something wrong in the United States in your schools.

Spain treated slavery in a different way. They had a more Roman way to slavery than the rest. For example the first laws to protect natives in the new world are the "new laws" of 1512.
