Fort Myers Beach current status. Still very sad.
All my prayers to the people still struggling with the loss and the endless nightmare that is the insurance settlement process.
This is hurricane season. Please remember to prepare your home now.
Always heed evacuation advice.

9 months to a year is very little time to repair the damage that was done here in Fort Myers Beach! It will take Al least 5 years to get her back. It took a month just to wrap our heads around the devastation and begin to get peoples power back on. Additionally the trades have been slammed at a time of severe worker shortages. I would like to say as a Fort Myers Native and in the Electrical Trade I am grateful and proud of how Residents of Fort Myers Beach have been so patient with the process of rebuilding, the red tape and insurance for repairs have been a huge hurdle. We will rebuild with love and patience!

If there is one thing that storms like this makes you appreciate is modern day building codes. People may not like the building regulations, but you can see the end results. I might add that storms like this is an educational tool for architectural engineers and designers to design better structures. My heart goes out to the people of Fort Myers. Being from Oklahoma we know all to well what storm damage looks like. Keep your head up Fort Myers.

Been at Fort Myers for 22 years and this was a life changing event. There is very little rebuilding going on, what locals are getting from insurance companies barely pays for clean up and demolition. Most lots are for sale place won't be the same. Politicians in Tallahassee banning books and fighting mickey mouse while insurance companies do whatever they want

Sadly, there is nothing to prevent another storm from happening again this year. Or next year. Or after that. Insurance has become unobtainable and without it you can’t borrow or build. The beach life that we’ve come to love has been destroyed forever. This is the case for every beachfront area on the gulf coast, not just Florida.

If you compare your video to any filmed throughout the last 9 months, the cleanup has come a long way. Every home owner has had to deal with unimaginable red tape to make every decision about their homes/properties. Many businesses rallied , making creative decisions and opened as best they could for the winter season. As part-time FM residents, we frequented as many businesses as possible and used the beaches there and on Sanibel weekly. Parking is available in many places and the cost supports the needs of the island. Fort Myers Beach will never be the same as it was before Ian and what it will look like down the road is being played out by those with a stake in the island. Pray for the people of the islands and come enjoy the beauty of the island as it was before the footprint of humans leave their mark again. ❤🌴🐬

Lots of trashed buildings, went to Sanibel and Captiva my favorite place The Cow is torn down nothing left I miss it. Lots of building messed up but oddly Captiva looked better, many of the homes looked good and still there because concrete block or poured concrete like ours, Bubble Room closed Green Flash closed and Cow gone. We just bought property in Mexico and this was my one and only absolute in the decision. NEVER on the beach for exactly this reason. Must be far enough inland to walk to the water, but high enough or back far enough so storm surge is not an issue. We bought about 1/2 mile from the water (easy walk) up on a hill (great views).

I haven’t been back (too painful) but I’ve been curious about how things are going. My fiancé works for the water company on Sanibel Island. He’s been out there since day 3 after Ian. He said it’s like a bomb went off. The devastation on FMB & Sanibel is more than words can convey. Both beaches are making progress but it’s going to take many years of recovery efforts. Ian wrecked SWFL, but the worst of it was Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach & Matlacha. Most of the slow progress can be directly blamed on the insurance companies, not paying or undercutting. Some of the "old Florida" wooden shacks on FMB were uninsurable and washed away. Those people either pay up or sell. It's a mess. I live a couple miles from Matlacha, luckily I had minor damage, still wasn't all covered by my insurance.

Hi Heather. Some businesses were operating out of trailers, but I didn’t really see much open. There was a restaurant open closer to the bridge area. Thanks for watching.

IF anyone thinks this will be a quick fix, then you ain't living in the real world. If it was only a say, even a dozen buildings, great. But it is NOT like that.Smoe places may not be repaired or replaced, who knows. But it takes time, with all the destruction.

Why wouldn't they be receiving massive federal help like that huge tree and house on its side should've been cleared after 9 months what about army reserve??? I dont get it ..... ur video is amazing and haunting esp the house with oven and microvave and grocery items sitting there frozen in time its post apocalyptic to me, living in Australia we dont get these catastrophes. My heart and every prayer i can muster go out to the Fort Myers community.

I’m not sure why these houses remain in this condition. It must have a lot to do with the insurance companies and their failure to pay out quickly. The images of the kitchen with the grocery items still standing is haunting , that’s why I took the picture. It is very sad. Thank you so much for watching the video.

@@livingthefortlauderdalelif995 thank u that makes sense but sad the govt can't provide more aid or pressure insurance to speed up process. I think insurance same world wide I know we had storms here recently and 1 year later people still had trees on their homes so it's one of those impossible things. Gosh will not forget ur video burnt into my retina thank u.

You said the words, "it teaches you a lesson." Maybe you hadn't meant to say that (?) and it was kind of "off the cuff." I cannot fathom what type of "lesson" was taught by a catalclysmic hurricane barrelling through and devastating an entire city. That one should always take hurricane preparedness and evacuation plans seriously? Have adequate property owners' insurance?

They needed to built concrete homes. From bottom to the top including the roof like in Puerto Rico. Homes are stronger bc they are built from steel and concrete. You can't built paper homes in Florida.

Thank you for this. I said this when the storm happened, Fort Myers would be left to their own devices, abandoned by the government. This doesn't look much different than after the storm. Fort Myers had a larger annual revenue than Miami by almost $9 million. To repair so much investment to this extent, it would be hard to restore. We're more worried about Ukraine, Russian war than our own people. Where India cuts rice exports to make sure their own people are fed. America, we allow an invasion over our borders with people who want to take down America. Unfortunately I saw this coming with how America treated the people in the past. God speed.

Building on Sand and hope water won't spill it away lol. you must be naive to move to hurricane spots and think something made of wood matches withstands the power of a storm system. the only tragedy really seems the average education level. guess some realtors gotta go for a real job now lol.

GOOD UPDATE, USED TO GO THERE OFTEN, THE GOOD THING IS THAT A LOT OF THE OLD BUILDINGS THAT WERE NOT HURRICANE PROOF ARE GONE AND THE NEW ONES WILL BE UP TO THE NEW STANDARDS AND MAY BE MORE RESILIENT TO THE NEXT STORM, AND THEY WILL COME WITH CLIMATE CHANGE THEY MAY BE STRONGER AND MORE FREQUENT, ONLY TIME WILL TELL
