I thought this would be a quick little prep of a Trichopeltarion greggi crab as the rock was thin and there was good separation between the rock and crab. Boy, was I wrong! It turned into such a disaster, there were cracks in it and the pyrite had turned some sections into a disaster!

For a moment there at the end, I was half expecting a large hammer to appear and reduce it to dust. You win some, you lose some.

Looks great even if it was a bit challenging, you still managed to prepare it! 😮Which amazes me to this day. Always love those videos!

Worst part about pyrite is how horribly unstable it is, especiallyafter exposureto sea water. It decomposes under normal atmospheric conditions and the chemical reaction from the decomposition is self perpetuating, leaving you with nothing but a pile of acidic sulphurous powder that destroys everything it touches. Theres only one treatment that I know of for pyrite rot and even that is only temporary at best. B72 isnt strong enough to combat it long term, B67 has its own drawbacks and still fails eventually, even fully encasing the specimen in acrylic resin doesn't work because the chemical reaction is self perpetuating. Bane of my life

Still looks good, and will be a good example of what pyrite does to preserved crabs.

I thought it was going to melt to sludge when you put it in acetone.

I would like to send you photos of the trace fossil I found near my gorge. It looks to be a very deep impression of a three towed animal with one talon on the middle toe
