My first car was a B7 A4 that I bought new and babied for fourteen years before having it totaled by a careless driver in a pickup truck. To this day I wonder if it's still on the road somewhere. Great to hear an update, sorry its not a good news story, I still have mine 8 years later. She's 17 now. I just cant part with her. Did an 850 mile round trip last week, not a single problem. i totally agree it's sad to see, and i get the sentimental value, my own gti which i had in about the same period as you, and even in the same color, but it ended life being chopped up, a part of me would love to see you bring it back to it's glory. but i would understand if it won't make sense money-wise. also i followed you back when you had the gti, i even think i commented that my old gti was the same color :P

Had an 06 GTO new, spent a lot of time and money in it for 4 years. Never saw rain, kept under a cover in the garage (drove it often when nice outside). Growing family, priorities in the wrong place, I sold it. Often wondered where it was. Did a vin search a few months ago, it was sold 3 times and it’s now wadded up at a salvage yard. That was pretty hard to see.

Buy it back 😊 i have owned one of my mk2s twice; 8v sold on 09, bought back 2015 and saved from a breaker.... 205 Gti sold in 06, bought back in 2021 after 8 owners.... rolling shell and van full of parts lol sorrento green 89 though 🙂👍

Hey Eli, I have never commented on any of your videos previously as I’m not someone who really comments on videos at all. I’ve seen your content for years and I remember when I first got my MK5 GTI in 2018 (my first car), I watched every single one of your videos. I got the stage 2 Unitronic tune, and I got the same forge shirt shifter u got as u sold me on that with your review! I still own my MK5 and I have definitely put my fair share of money into it. I got it at 70k miles and it’s now at almost 117k. I baby her and always do everything that needs to be done. Now with all of that being said, I’ve seen you make videos in the past and posts that you miss the car. honestly I have thought about getting different cars but there is just something magical about the mk5 gti. If you’re really willing to get it back and save it I would support it fully. I understand the “let it rest” thing that someone else commented, however, I feel like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get YOUR actual car back, and not just another random car of the same year you know? It’s up to you ultimately, but I plan on keeping my own MK5 as long as I can as I love it that much.

My first new car was a 2004 Mustang GT. I babied that car for 3 years until I traded it for a MK5 GTI. Found the Mustang 2 years ago on Copart and it looked rough. Broke my heart but it is what it is.

Finally, my Mk5 looks better than Eli's 😅 Sad to see it like this. Started my journey with Mk5 when you were at the end of it, but still enjoying your content!

I completely understand the nostalgia factor of it being your first car, I tried to hold on to my first car for as long as possible until it just made no sense to own anymore. I live in CT and was recently thinking about getting a mk5 gti to get back into a golf since its been a while for me, and they're all like this here. Absolute rotten piles of junk for $3k+ Ultimately it's your money and your call but I think it's not really worth saving

Considering we just paid close to $10 to have a used motor with 89,000 miles on it installed in our mk6 it might have a higher value than you think. There is a large shortage of decent used parts for these cars. I just paid $2,800 for a 2009 Prius with problems, it will probably cost at least $2500 for a new HV battery add a set of tires and brakes and fix the console display and it’s probably going to be $6-$7k all in with the mods I do. I could still sell it and make a profit. New cars are so outrageous that fixing up an old one is reasonable these days. But I have a budget for cars, taking project money away from that pool would slow down the planned upgrades on my other cars.

IMO if you don't have a good place to let it sit around while you work on your other 2 I wouldn't personally. I'd buy it back if I had a good place to store it for the time being and passively work on it when the time/funds allowed it without interfering with your original goals/ future plans.

I bought a brand new 2009 GTI, literally had 8 miles on it when I signed the papers. Car didn’t even make it to 300 miles before it was back in the shop. Worst car I had ever own. I believe it had under 18k before it was lemon’d.

I bought a mk5 (largely because of your content) in 2017 and sold it in 2021 for an E91 BMW. I keep tabs on the mk5 too for fun. I think you answered your own question at the end of the video. My thought is to keep moving forward (tj reference). If anything find a better mk5 that is as nice as you bought your old one. So many car reviewers rave about how good they are to drive. I think the good ones will be kind of collectible someday

As a car guy to car guy let it go! Like you said it clearly you have no space to park for the gti and no return of investment once you get the car back It did lived a long life now if you want to be in a gti vibe again I say sell either one of your car or trade for a decent gti or a newer one!

I had found my mk6 shortly after i got rid of it and it was a mess. I would love to find it and get it back for the sentimental value but it would be such a poor financial idea. Curious how much you offered the guy to have him reply the way he did lol

If I were you I would only buy this car for sentimental value. It needs a lot of work and isn’t really worth it in the long run if your trying to sell later. Save the money and find something better

2500 for a GTI? It’s your first car that made you who you are, of course it’s worth 2500. GTI’s here in Germany are more than double with 200k km. You can find a used power steering pump or whatever it was and also repair the alternator. You’re going to have so much fun restoring it, bringing it back to it’s default settings, document everything

Just wait it out. The guy says no low balling but is trying to low ball you with a pretty much broken down car. Blinkers don't work, wipers don't work. Alternator is broken. Power steering module is broken. The car is basically already dead. He won't be able to sell it for 2000 much less for 2800. Also I think it's illegal to drive that car in that condition. So he's probably not even driving it. I would message him and tell him that with each passing day, I will lower my bid with 50 dollars.
