Foundation season 1 episode 9 breakdown. Deep dive recap and review of s01e09 “The First Crisis” with the ending explained. Please Subscribe 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
Episode 9 of the Apple TV+ adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation was the penultimate episode and it started to deliver answers. On Trantor, Brother Dawn is exposed for his differences and flees the palace to join Azura. When Brother Dawn arrives, he learns that she was part of a trap to replace him with a clone that was raised by a shadow group that wants to overthrow the dynasty. He’s rescued by Brother Dusk and Shadowmaster Obrecht and Azura is taken into custody.
In episode 9 Salvor and everyone else on the Invictus return to Terminus. Phara steals a Thespin ship and tries to kill Salvor. Before she can follow through the Vault opens and provides the distraction necessary for Salvor to shoot her with her bow. Hari Seldon emerged from the Vault saying that he was glad to see the Anacreons, Thespins, and Termini there. He believes this is a sign that the Foundation might survive.
There are still many mysteries and unanswered questions going into the Season 1 finale. The Apple TV+ adaptation has gone in its own direction, but there were many connections to Asimov’s original works in this week’s episode. Episode 10 will give us a better idea of the direction of the series.
EPISODE 9
The First Crisis
On Terminus, Salvor witnesses how powerful the null field has become. Brother Dawn makes a daring choice. Premiere Date: November 12, 2021
The official Foundation TV Logline from Apple:
When revolutionary Dr. Hari Seldon predicts the impending fall of the Empire, he and a band of loyal followers venture to the far reaches of the galaxy to establish The Foundation in an attempt to rebuild and preserve the future of civilization. Enraged by Hari's claims, the ruling Cleons - a long line of emperor clones - fear their grasp on the galaxy may be weakening as they’re forced to reckon with the potential reality of losing their legacy forever.

great review as always. One of the better episodes, next season needs more proficient editing etc. Problem is keeping the stars in the show (apart from Cleon's and their robot). Time cannot move forward far at all. The Terminus storyline (by far the worse part of the show) suffers with population size. The book uses technology leverage over the other three kingdoms while here its cooperation for mutual survival instead. Nice idea with limited production resources they had to work with. The Cleon storyline by far the best and works well. Brother Day, without that vision and news of Brother Dawn's imperfections will cement a realisation of the Empire's future fall. This may force him to contract his forces inward and clamping down hard on the inner worlds he can control. Iron Fist. The second season I assume shows Foundation expansion through trade leading to corruption. The Trantor story sees current brother Dawn become Day. He's a weaker ruler than was his older brother Dusk. This leads to the charismatic rise of General Bel Riose. Who am sure with current Hollywood traits will be a middle aged white male. Towards the end or at the end of season two we'll bump into the Clown... sorry for the length...

I'm hoping it ends with the Foundation expanding and growing. Taking its first steps towards greatness, the seed sprouting. But, I hope there's a significant time jump to be established, for the start of the second season. Certainly there's a lot to happen, maybe the departure of Demerzel. The fall of the Cleons, the rise of a more independent military. But, this all requires a huge exposition dump. Which I'm not sure they'll do. I suspect they'll have to show the disintegration of Synnax, and the weakening of the Imperial bonds. But, we don't have any characters established that aren't in the wider imperium. I'm sure the conclusion will be glorious. Maybe tease another character with _power/instincts_ like Gaal, to get people thinking and curious between seasons.

Yes i was thinking the same thing and i am beginning to think that this situation with crisis was developed by the Robot , she has being around for 11 thousand years , she has access to Cleons, she was with the 1st Cleon , she was given a vision by mother , and recall what she told Day when he was dawn about the robots , "they were destroyed by your kind" and now add what the fake cleon said how long they have being planning this all as far back to the 1st Cleon, as well as how did they get access to change the lastest Cleon, take into account what savor father Abbas said about the best predictor "History is the best predictor of the future" and what did Gaal say about the history has a weapon, only a Robot can make calculation that far back into history and make calculations forward in my opinion it`s all Lady Demerzel doing after the Mother gave her a vision of how to look at things in different way

It is very much appreciated by discerning viewers. Also must applaud your very quick turnaround time, which somehow does not come off at all feeling rushed. @@logirex The actual inspiration for this Azura betrayal from the show is the gardener of Cleon in the prequels, who Cleon was so delighted in that he decided to promote him to a higher position. The gardener did not want to move up to a higher official position and wanted to stay as just a gardener, so he did what any sane person would do and murdered Emperor Cleon instead, plunging the Empire into a succession crisis that led to the takeover of a military junta.

I don't think it was predictable until Dawn show up at her door. Not from Dawn point of view. What is more probable: finding a nice girl or a decades-old intricate plot with another clone? It's only predictable if you watch it from the god-like point of view of the showrunner - thinking about what makes a better story.

Excellent episode. As usual it's the Empire storyline that fared the best. I had thought that Azura was an Imperial agent tasked by Brother Dusk to test Brother Dawn. The resistance movement was right out of left field for me, but make sense as we still don't know who destroyed the star bridge but we know they have access to technology after Demerzel's raid on the asteroid laboratory. I'm looking forward to finding out who is behind it all and the patience of this organisation. The Terminus storyline continues to disappoint. A few videos ago I joked that Salvor would Die Hard the Invictus and use it's weapon systems to bring the two(four) kingdoms into line. I don't like my joke coming true but now the Vault has opened maybe we can move back towards the book narrative. I believe Gael is being used as a viewer POV character and will use suspended animation to survive to the end of the 1000 year dark ages.

Right, this episode seems to be where the series has hit it's stride and is I think the strongest since the first two episodes. Nice to see our speculations about the gardener pay off and I am happy to see they did something interesting with the subplot and also give us a strong hint about a very organised resistance. Chances are the next episode will reveal that the starbridge bombings were the work of the same organisation which likely is divided into differing cells to let it continue. Brother Dusk may have some regret over his actions in bombing Thespis and Anacreon. As you note it does clear Demerzel of interferring with the clones. But I think she is definitely trying to change the clones and either subvert or temper their cruelty. This is likely to be more of a plot point for later seasons. Maybe end of season two perhaps the start of season three? Just a guess. Pretty much all the Empire side plot is a good payoff for the past two episodes and if I am right also for the events of the first two episodes too. Interesting hints dropped - Brother Dusk aka Cleon XII talks about the momentus events the Dynasty has participated in. One was the mention of the robot wars. Which means the robot war has to be within the 400 years of the dynasty. This I think lays some ground work for Demerzel and how she was modified. It also counts as pretty recent history for an Empire that has endured for 12,000 years. Most likely the robot wars were in the reign of Cleon I and thus accounts for the how and why of Demerzel being there with him. Did she suggest the clone dynasty, perhaps? Possibly as a way to both preserve her existence and to prove useful to the Empire. Salvor staying awake in the jump lends further credence to her being related to Gaal, who is the last character we saw doing that. The Terminus side is still the weakest part. We still have characters being stupid - the Lancer pilot had to know that Fara is going to kill her once she has control of the lancer. So why does she transfer control? She has just seen her compatriot killed literally in front of her. Well because the plot needs it to be so so we can have the mighty meeting at the end. Nice to see Hari again but the next episode needs to tap dance around why Hari isn't always around going forward. No doubt they have thought of it. This should see the Foundation likely cementing itself as the technical expertise required to keep the Invictus servicable and in action. But the Emperor should be paying attention to the Outer Reaches again, after all the Aegis hasn't reported in for some time and Brother Dusk should be checking into that. There is going to have to be some serious work done to explain why a legendary ghost ship of the Empire, a lost flagship no less, needs to stay in the Outer Reaches and not be reclaimed by the Empire. Or at the very least destroyed to prevent the jump systems being examined and copied. If the writers are smart the Foundation will leverage their knowledge of the jump systems and effectively blackmail the Emperor into leaving them alone or having that knowledge dispersed to lots of enemies of the Empire. Certainly Thespis and Anacreon would love to have that tech to upgrade their standing fleets at the very least. But this would get us to the book plot point of the Foundation finding security by becoming the font of technical knowledge in the Outer Reaches. This is likely the balancing resolution of the first Seldon Crisis. Also another interesting hint in the voice over from Gaal. Is she admitting to being an unreliable narrator here? After all she is fairly explicitly telling us that she is editing the history she is telling us here.... There is still a bad undercurrent of special people under pinning this series. Which I think detracts from the point of the stories - my suspicion is that is going to get worse going forward. But this feels like the series actually showing us a good sense of where it is going and the kind of tale it wants to tell.

I really enjoyed episode 8 on The Maiden - and was so amazed by Lee Pace's acting, same for Laura Birn. That Lee Pace, through body language, was able to convey SO MUCH, and not even look sexy in a loin cloth, amazes me. And when Demerzel leaves him, after her comment about no t wishing such emptiness on anyone, he adds so much to the look on his face, by swallowing. Great acting. However, I must admit I really enjoyed episode 9. And it's ending, with Seldon's appearance and words, was fantastic. If the books are close to ones heart, the series can be a bit tough nut to crack. Not in the sense of gender changes or that stuff, it is the future of mankind so everything like that makes sense. But they’ve gone in a very different direction with the “star bridge” and star warsy action. For me it was a disappointment since I would’ve love to share my love for the books with my SO, and the series would’ve been a perfect media for that. But maybe it’s just not plausible in the case of Foundation.. Apart from the awkward editing and, frankly hard to follow timing, it’s not a bad show.. it’s just different.

@@clipsolo I agree. The gender swapping really does not matter as Asimov is so non specific about his characters that it really makes no difference if they are male or female. Its more the adding characters, adding events, changing how events unfold, changing interpersonal relationships and the vastly changed timeline. The three main storylines of the show (Empire, Gaal and Salvor) are nothing like the books. Hell, the Empire story line is just made up and Gaal really had no story past the first chapters of the book. It is the Gaal story that irks me the most as it injects so much that is not there in the books. It injects motivations that are just nonexistent in the books thru the murder of Hari and the continued presence of hologram Hari explaining things to what is now mentalic superwoman Gaal Dornick. The changing of the Vault on Terminus from something the settlers brought into a mysterious object is also problematic as Terminus should be the greatest concentration of science in the universe. Resource poor, but rich beyond the dreams of Empire in technological innovation.

I'm really, really loving this series! They're taking huge liberties with the source material, but doing so in ways that rarely contradict the books in meaningful ways. It's a very delicate line they're dancing on, and they're doing a fantastic job so far, and the entire production is top notch across the board. That said, this most recent episode fell somewhat short of the bar they've set for themselves. It was 80% fantastic, but the ending just seemed too deus ex machina. Psychohistory can't predict the actions of individual people, but that's exactly what it would have had to do for everything to wrap up neatly as it did. Can't wait for next week's episode, and I'm already sad that the season will be ending!

@@philipbanks7730 That's the frustrating thing. The books are bare bones and offer a lot of leeway in what you could do. The whole genetic emperor thing is actually a clever change. However, the showrunners do not seem to understand ideas of the books. For example, this episode talks about how people like the scar because they can see the sky. The book mentions that most of Trantor's population is agoraphobic because they are used to living in the confines of the buildings. That would be more interesting to mention than the saccharine "We felt free because we could see the sky." They have no imagination.

As to the next episode, I expect that Day will come back haunted by his walk in the sprial. As a victim of his own circumstances, he will take it out on the original Cleon, and smash the First to bits. He may well have to be replaced by his backup as well. In the next season, I hope to see Terminus and Anacrea start to have the commerce relationship that was developed in the books, though I doubt that it will be a crisis, per se (trying really hard not to do a spoiler!!), though i can see how it can be made into one. My hope for season 2? That we get to see Seldon finally smoke a cigar!! Seems ot me that the show is finally starting to use the material that the books offer in plain sight. I watched a Goyer interview in which he said that the books are about ideas ..... so maybe, just maybe, he has heard all of the comments and will turn back to the books for the material that is in there. I am under the impression that the second season has yet to be completely filmed, though I may be wrong here..... I get it now that he spent this first season developing backstories - I just hope it wasn't at the expense of losing viewers. No, the vault did not open in the way that is shown on screen - yes, it opened differently in the books. But I can accept that as a matter of screen dazzle with nothing more than a shrug of my shoulders. In today's SF world you need a lot of special effects to keep things moving -- you can't get an audience without it. The point is that I think the series is going to get better as regards the books. A note on psychohistory: the story hues beautifully to the underpinnings of what this type of mathematics is -- you can predict the future by looking at the past. It is in fact a mathematics that is in use in small studies (not a galactic scale): a pandemic was predicted based on charting when pandemics occured the past . Thus, scientists were aware that we were way overdue for a pandemic. And now we have one. It is used in economics a lot -- see: Paul Krugman. I was first drawn to Asimov's books for the ideas of the mathematics, which granted, he only touched as a narrative -- there as no actual math - but it lit lots of little fires wherin the concept was making a few lightbulb moments, then played with, and then tested. A word on plot: If Asimov had written about all of the battles over planets we would have a more detailed set of plots to consider -- The Galactic Empire is failing , there are millions of battles on millions of planes, the fall of an empire is quite the messy affair (The Fall of the Roman Empire), and I think that this is what Goyer has alluded to in the show. It is taking a lot of 20/20 hindsight to recognize this, and I still would have preferred not to have dealt with it. He is using a lot of plot devices -- characters, side stories which I suppose are supposed to make us 'feel' more for them, as well as recognizing that the fall of any empire touches everyone at some point. Television and film are a breed unto their own... what can I say?

I think there's more mileage to be had for the show in keeping Dawn alive; otherwise, his only purpose would have been to show us the genetic backups and that there are insurgencies in the Empire. I already knew there is trouble in the land because every world we've visited has problems - things as simple as no fresh water that the Cleons ignore. And it's obvious that genes can be tampered with. I'm looking forward to more from the Upstart Cleon, Dawn. Your point about commerce is interesting re Anacrea and Thesips. Each one has what the other lacks. I think that was revealed when the delegations brought gifts to Empire. That would be the bones of a functioning society. Add in jump technology that can connect people across vast distances and it's a game-changer. Maybe the vault isn't just a lock box for Hari's digital remains. Maybe it's a portal of some kind. The show has primitive forms of time travel: the cryo pod and Jump drives that fold space. All that's missing is true time travel and maybe that's what the Vault is.

Pretty much agree with all that. I hope the plot will follow the books more closely but I don't think it will to be honest. They will clearly have a lot more empire stuff and that's a good thing. I think there's scope for a lot more drama there as things will get a lot tougher for the empire. It's likely that they will want to add a lot more drama and action to the plot from the books so they need to write a lot of new stuff as there's not much of that in the second half of book 1. My main concern is how much they push the plot along by the end of season 2. If they go at the same pace as season 1 we'll have the religion story maybe a bit of Mallow and general riose. Hope it's enough to keep the audience for a renewal.

Interesting that we were overdue for a pandemic, and depending on what you read, one was made up in a lab and got out. Convenient! But also from what I read, there's viruses escaping from these labs every year. One could believe that the reaction is a manufactured Crisis. Read Nicholas Wade's paper on the Wuhan lab theory! _puts on tinfoil hat_ And yes, statistical analysis on past trends is what psychohistory and economics are based, as well as the Farmer's Almanac. But using Krugman is a poor example. His biases cloud the mathematics. After all, he said the Market would crash when a certain person became President. It made a lot of believers sell their shares. Granted, I believe the Market is overdue for a severe adjustment, but it still keeps going. Baffling.

My only problem with this episode was Phara. The second Sal left the Invictus I just thought to myself. "Sal is going to tie her up, but Phara frees herself and goes on to fuck things up." And lo and behold. Phara gets away, and fucks things up. I get that Phara is a damaged and dark person. But allowing someone like that to live while a hero like Lewis dies just boggles my damn mind. Shoot them out the airlock already. You'd actually save time for the crisis.

I grew up a geek. Read a lot of Asimov... much respect. The thing I wasn't crazy about was him going on for two pages about Plutonium 239. I'm not a scientist but he was. Although 'I, Robot', 'Bicentennial Man', and other stories looked at AI, he was always a dedicated scientist and looked at these viewpoints with that eye. It's a bit upsetting to me that this story has in it the concept of souls, reincarnation, and a divine being(s)... these do not feel like Asimov elements and I'm surprised they were included. It feels disrespectful to the great man's legacy.

I somewhat regret that I didn't comment last week. There was one thing; Cleo vs. Demercel in the end. The death of the priestess was not petty revenge against that priestess. It was intended by Cleo to hurt and punish Demercel. I was very surprised with the Brother Dawn twist, though. With that "meet cute" introduction and the organic development I really didn't expect it to be a setup as well. I'm so happy how this show turned out, but I fear it might go the way of many promising Sci Fi shows. One film or season not financially lucrative as supposed, so given up and then what little is there becomes a cult classic.

Short of a clone, we can count on the corporal Hari to remain very much dead. However, as he had a device implanted in in his skull prior to leaving Trantor, we know he has at least one digital copy of his mind. We already saw that much when his Quantum digital consciousness interacted with Gaal on the Raven. I suspect the Vault was actually a communications tower built to receive updates on Hari's quantum digital mind. This would enable him to appear to be present in multiple places at once. I think Day might have his hands full if he learns what happened to his reconnaissance ship on Terminus and that the Invictus has been captured. Plus, I have a feeling that we're not done with Halima yet. Her thing is reincarnation and she could return in some form, maybe as a martyr. Things are set up for Empire to discover what's going on on Terminus because he can't attack since they have the warship.

Yet, I can't help but flash back to the sequence with Demerzel and little Dawn, now Day, when they were observing the hanging bodies of the emissaries that Day, now Dusk, had killed prior to the large attacks on Anacreon and Thespis. Dawn asks her, "How often do we make this choice?" And she says, "Always." It is my belief that he has always questioned that choice, which we see when he is Day and has a confrontation with Dusk about it. It makes me wonder if he's willing to take a chance on a different choice (mercy), particularly after his exchange with the older gentleman while walking The Spiral.

@@tori_forte I don't know if Demerzel's cutting words about emptiness will make him strive for compassion or make him strive to be the best monster he can be. The little boy did grow up to have a cruel streak with how he dealt with Halima and Demerzel...so who knows what the writers will make him do. If he does let Upstart Dawn live, it'll be in such a way that Dawn is miserable.

Not sure how I feel about the holo recreations of Hari. Either on the ship or Terminus, I preferred the idea of pre-recorded versions, it feels like a bit of a cheat. They seem perhaps too human, too accurate a model of the original.

I really enjoy the series. I wish there were more episodes in season 1. My only question is how did the terror cell know that Dawn would interact with Azura, in the first place? Are there other plants in the palace staff or was their plan all centered on her building a relationship with Dawn? Dawn's empathy is actually growth for a Cleon and may lead to the type of Day that Demerzal hopes for.

I think there's a big and growing resistance movement. Probably spies everywhere. This will only get worse and no matter who the emperor is they can only stave off the inevitable.

@@nigel280167 I think you're right! The movement would have to have multiple active followers working in the palace for their plan to succeed. So, it's still not snuffed out completely.

Most likely, there are several terrorist-cells loosely following the same directives. My question: is there a puppet master or director (eg Demrezel or Hari?) behind the scenes? Or, do they all act independently?

I keep thinking that Salvor is actually Gail's daughter. I remember in one of the first 2 episodes, Gail had her embryo removed and stored until they land. Salvor seems to have Gail's memories and some of her abilities. Just a theory I have.

In the book Harry knew the Empire would exile them to the most remote habitable available planet. There we're 2 candidate planets and he had previsions send there in advance. I can't remember if he sends previsions in both or he made a gambles bet on Trentor.

My thinking on Brother Dawn is that he is toast. I actually thought it would be in this episode, but his days are numbered. The fact that the overarching theme is that Empire is rigid and unable to change tells me that his changes cannot be tolerated.

@@cybele_mullejz I think Day will test Dawn by giving him a choice of what to do with Azura but I don't think a public execution will be one of the choices offered because Empire won't want to expose Dawn's vulnerability to the rebels' plot.
