I loved the three day workshop! I can still hear "clean head, eyes to the light, know your gear, stay focused, do not get into debt" I am honored to have had such a teacher at the beginning of my third career and really appreciate CL for their work.

I really appreciate that he speaks from the heart and as a working photographer with a family to support, he hits so hard on some of the greatest conflicts I have. It is refreshing to see some being so real about it, and actually love photography at the end of the day.

very honest. i like the way you put yourself out there Zack. in the purest form. you're vulnerability is what draws people in. so many people pick up a fancy $1500 camera, shoot in P or AUTO, and then charge $2000 for a wedding! I would not dare charge a dime until I knew what I was doing. Now, I am confident that I can get the shot and I kind of feel the ambient light settings the moment I enter a room. You have to free yourself from the burden of fighting with the camera in a shoot.

I totally agree. You need to know your gear in order to be a good photographer. And you should know why things work the way they do and not limit yourself to know how to use them. For example many photographers don't even know why aperture controls depth of field or what the inverse square law means in terms of light propagation. They know how to take advantage of these but don't really understand the principles. While I am not saying that you should know all the intricate complications of modern cameras, you should at least understand the basic principles of optics if you want to master a craft based on light.

2 years later this video is just as relevant, probably timeless. Funny, Edward Weston saying the these basic truths way back in 1927. This is my second entry (re-entry) into photography and these messages are now making sense to me. Tame the wild beast or else it will own you - good advice. Using a Canon 5D Classic - and doing just fine by this now-two-generations-old camera. One lens, 35mm. A true leader like this is not afraid of constant deconstruction of what he/she knows - that makes heroes

I hear what you are saying and I love it. it hit home. I have the canon rebel with the lenses kit. but I got to get more stuff so that I can do the kind of photography that I want to do. I will watch what I do. and the money spending for sure. I quit my job to do this. I have waited to many years not to see it though. So I will buy the less costly stuff and play with it till I know it in and out.I will figure it out. I got into this art in the seventies so I know what you say is so true. i guess I found you at the right time.

@lav3nd3r09

Yes. I've been shooting with my phone for 2 years because I couldn't afford a camera. And while waiting for my camera, I've watched and read many tutorials, tips, reviews and other photography stuffs on the internet. They say start with a prime lens and learn everything that you can. Because that cheap prime lens has almost everything that you need as a beginner, and you will learn photography manually including zooming. So last month, I finally had a camera. I got the Canon 70D and the 40mm f/2.8 prime lens. I didn't get the kit lens because I've used it before on my friends' cameras and I thought it won't really help me anymore since I've been shooting for years with my phone, so I wanted a prime that is good enough for serious beginners. Some of my friends already upgraded their kit lens to prime lens and to zoom lens without even shooting with those lenses for a considerable time.18-55, 50 1.8, 55-250. They're so eager to upgrade for new gears like what Zack Arias said, without even mastering what they have. So they don't know what should they get and what is good quality lens. They don't even know how to shoot in manual. People always ask me when will I upgrade my lens. Since my 40mm is a pancake lens, they think it's not a good lens because of its size. They think their kit lenses are more sharp and powerful. They think the longer the lens, the better images and videos you get. Shooting with my phone for years and studying on the internet really helped me. The first night I shot with my DSLR, I was already shooting in full manual because I already studied the basic settings for concert photography before having a DSLR. I knew auto won't let me freeze those actions on stage. Lots of people hang their DSLRS on their necks and just use it to take selfies. That really made me upset for not being able to have a DSLR that time. But now, it was worth the wait. I've been shooting both photos and videos with the goodness and the limitations of my 40mm f/2.8. After 6 months I'll consider buying an external flash, and my next lens would probably be the 24-70 f/2.8 after a year or two. I don't wanna settle for less anymore. I won't buy a 55-250 which I can't really use in low lights such as concert photography. I'll wait for that moment when I'm and ready and deserving to have that great lens. I don't wanna be that another rich kid who has expensive gears but poor images. I wanna earn that gear with my skills. Thanks Zack Arias! :)

something MOST photographers (as well as lovers of photography) out there don't realize (and it was briefly talked about somewhere in this really good video) is that photography has two very important sides to it: side 1: technique (based on a little of Physics, Chemistry, and Math ...) side 2: art (based on what we learn about composition, light, how to see things etc, as in painting for example ...) so, yes, photographers are artists in a sense but not every artist is a good photographer necessarily, right? besides, even painters do have to learn some basic important *technical* stuff about their art or their artworks would look mediocre ...

I stopped listening to people's recommendations for what gear they THINK I need, versus the gear I know I need. People will sometimes tell me I should buy a specific brand or class of flash because it does certain things... fact is, if you can master manual mode, then any flash will really do. It's the extra features (like wireless and commander/slave modes) that really makes up the difference in terms of the different flashes that are out there (aside from power level which is an important thing to consider), but if you know flash photography and usually shoot in manual mode (on the flash) then all the extra fluff doesn't matter and is irrelevant. I shoot with $100 flashes. I don't need the $500 NIkon flashes. They're over priced, and for what I do (which is not professional photography) the $100 flashes work great for my needs. And at the same time, I can buy (5) of them for the same price I"d say for one single Nikon flash. So i agree people get sucked into the gear too much, and not the craft. I've seen some really good photos come out of $500 DSLRs and I've seens ome really horrible photos come out of $5000 Pro-level DSLRs, because the photographer simply didn't know what they were doing, AND/OR didn't have a vision for that shot.

when you say that you need to get beyond that pix (in flicker), is that from observing a photo that is before editing or after? If your observation is after editing then you have to do another class on photo editing. I would prefer if your observation is before editing. Before editing is the real photo and real skill.

+Ben sannw Reciprocals are the f-stop/shutter speed combinations that all give the same exposure. For example if the proper exposure is f5.6 @ 1/250 then f4 @ 1/500, f2.8 @1/1000, f2.0 @ 1/2000 all give the same exposure. You need to know which one to use given the situation.

Personal therapy disguised as a photography lesson. So you are a self proclaimed loser if you don't have photography, but you already cited and spoke the adage that many are called, few chosen, (which is an old line and can be said about anything) and admitted it didn't choose you. So what are you doing teaching, the "Foundations of a Working Photographer: Introduction" ? ... and no, I don't think I'll stick around for it, but I wish you luck. I have a lot of photos to make and really do not have time for personal philosophies disassociated from the real work at hand: photography.
