In Infinity Pool, a couple are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors. That's only scratching the surface of the madness in our story, and in the end we are left with man questions about what it all means. We're breaking down the story, its important themes of identity and how it pertains to James, as well as explaining the ending.

I interpreted his staying on the island as a little more symbolic when I first watched it. Even though he could physically go back to his normal life, he was mentally trapped on the island after the traumatic experience. Plus it doesn't seem very logistically likely for him to get back to the compound and into the closed hotel.
@FawnieFox

That’s how I interpreted it as well; like a part of him would always be trapped on that island. Metaphorically, at least.

I was hoping he goes home and sees one of the clones already there, having taken over his life. Bc maybe the clone thought he was the original and maybe the one we see isn’t even the original. I wish they would have went deeper into the whole “which one is the real one” or at least had the clones screaming and confused and thinking and acting like THEY are the real ones and what’s happening why are they the ones being locked up etc etc The whole “what does it mean to be you” existential rabbit hole.

The rich people aren’t able to avoid consequences by themselves. It requires the government’s complicity by accepting bribes. My point is that instead of being upset that rich people don’t accept consequences. Be upset that the government allows it. Weak libertarian take. It is very idealistic to assume any government can stand up to billions of dollars of "investment," especially a poor one. At the end of the day we shouldn't blame the government for being bought, we should blame the people buying it. Otherwise you're blaming the victim for being murdered.

True… but the analogy is a bit more complex, as who is responsible for the government? Primarily….the people/voters. If the people elect totally unqualified, inexperienced, ethically challenged grifters because they are theatric and give good speeches…then the voters are also responsible. For example, there have been several referendums, one in the mid-90s, to move toward universal, gov healthcare in the US. The Republicans made scare ads that this would lead to socialism, government “death panels” etc and the everyday Republicans, who would benefit most from a gov, universal health system….voted it down.

As a Fijian, seeing different cultures in the Island is very accurate, Even though we are situated in Micronesia, most of the population is familiar with Traditional Fijian culture, Indian culture (Due to Britain importing slaves from India), Western Culture (Colonialism) and Chinese Culture ( Due to the Chinese debt traps that give them ownership of some parts of the Island). This is also pretty similar to Island counties in Polynesia as well.

Hey, I know it's off topic, but those debt traps are real right? Most people in the western world insist that they aren't debt traps and that the Chinese aren't buying up the third world. I'm pretty sure that they are, but it's hard to know anything for sure from behind a computer screen on the other side of the world... Again, sorry to bother you about this on a random movie video, but Americans need to know about this shit. It's not foreign aid if they are buying land and people, its colonization.

And the characters personalities degraded in each copy until their worst or most distilled essential attributes remained?

Wait a minute, you don't know how real or unreal their reactions were, because the clones were IDENTICAL in appearance, emotions and feelings. When James was first executed he was tied to a pole and given that he had a BETA personality, he didn't can couldn't do anything more than scream for EM to help him.But with each clone James seem to develop more of an Alpha male personality.

I enjoyed this movie a lot more than some of his other films. I look at the ending as you can take that final shot in a few different ways whether it’s a clone that he sent back or a clone that’s there, I read it as mentally what happened at the resort will always stick with him and he’s crushed from it. Another interesting thing is I believe there is actually a law in some country where you can pay someone to substitute your jail sentence for you.

Exact pyche/thought process/physical body/memories as the person they were cloned from Even if the memories would be gooey (legally speaking, the detective confirmed that the clone would HAVE to have exact memories or else the execution wouldn't proceed) The clone wouldn't act like a new born just trying out his new body (since the psyche or adult brain is still cloned from the orginal, how would he remember/fathom Gabby or lust or even curiosity of death) But you could be right like if it's like a "new human" the point was to make sure he(the clone) would remember his crime of running over the native person It's like the moment they killed the native he asexually reproduced into two people (like a microbacteria) And this is why it's a mystery and the whole meaning of what it means to be human.

I find it interesting how James only really started to care about the bad things he was doing when it was *him* (or his clone, which is just him really) who was suffering the consequences. So selfish. Edit: even then. He didn’t care. That’s pure evil, if you ask me. Either that or hedonism.

This movie felt very refreshing for me in many ways and had me on glued to the screen the entire time because I went into it knowing nothing about it except that Mia Goth was in it and that was enough for me. Great cinema is still alive ! Can’t wait to see what Brandon Cronenberg does next ! There was plenty of food for thought and interpretation.

New theory: At the ending the group who was leaving, said: 'see you next year , James', implying that this James is a clone. Every year they simply play with this clone. Likely, the original was killed 5 years ago since the plane ticket said 2018

The sexually repressed nature of the protagonist, James, is obscurely alluded to by the title of the book he wrote. When Mia Goth's character says "The Variable Sheath" suggestively, it's to suggest that she is aware of the fact that the Latin noun for sheath is v4gin4. The book's title is essentially a euphemism for the other woman.

Enjoyed this movie until the ending. I wish they would have had the clones more animated in thinking they were the real ones and leave us questioning if we are even seeing the original people or the clones. Like the game SOMA, if a copy is made of you, at that moment you’re exactly the same, so who is the actual YOU? That kinda stuff trips me out and I was really hoping to see more of that existential drama in this. More than him being a dog clone at the end like why

This movie was freaking weird. Very likely that his real version was executed and his memory lives on in the clones. Those crazy people are definitely playing mind games with him at the ending or because of that fact that he executed himself, the memory of him experiencing everything remains while the others’ memories have vanished.

He seems to be doing good work, but I think ending could've been a bit better if this "new" James went off the deep end and killed all the rich folks (in, say, the bus) - now viewing them as fakes - before going back to be some sort of cloning serial killer hermit. Also, Mia Goth is quickly becoming a horror icon, huh? I think all the flicks she's been in were good, no?

The clone survives the process, not the original: During the cloning process, they pump in red and blue liquids (12:34) and then show him lying down (12:49). The first 'clone' is encased in red silicone and lying down (13:17). This suggests that the lying down person is the original. This may make it more horrifying because the officials lied about who dies and actually allow the revenge ritual to kill the person who committed the crime. It also convinces the new person that they are a direct continuation of the original person. This new person could have absolved themselves of all the actions that the original had done and gone home and lived a new life. Instead, they are trapped in a cycle of depravity.

Here's my interpretation: Mia Goth is drugs personified. Both behavior and sensations of drug abuse have duality, which is reflected in a couple of the masks (along with trypophobia, which could symbolize drug-induced deterioration). Skarsgard both leaves and remains (during the rainy season) because drugs are a trap one can never leave (and because we don't know who is a clone or how many clones exist). One could consider the movie miscast because Skarsgard is so big and strong, but drugs can make anyone weak and dependent. He even gets a knife and a gun, but can't free himself. He trades a reliable wife for a woman who acts like a horrible drug.
