Great that you take on this topic! The more we feel comfortable tinkering with our pens, the more susceptible to fountain pen addiction we’ll be. It might happen that the misalignement is no longer present when the nib is pulled out, because it’s caused by an assymmetrical position of the nib relative to the feed, a fault in the feed, or even the housing of the feed or of the lower end of the nib. So I prefer to pull out the nib before I do any adjustments of the nib itself. When having the nib out of the pen I find it easier to decide if upward or downward adjustment is what is needed, in addition, downward adjustment is so much easier for me with the nib loose. In that situation I test for any remaining scratchyness holding the nib pinched with my fingers.Testing ink flow requires the nib to be mounted I think.

A last, an alignment technique that looks safe enough for even a mechanically disinclined person. One question: do brass shims come in only one thickness?

put the batteries in the loupe: it takes LR1130 disc batteries (cheap). It'll make photography easier, for us at least, to see, if not for you to shoot. Good trick using the shim. I might try it on one of my music (3 tine) nibs that's been buggin me for years.

Thanks! I've used shims to adjust flow before but it never occurred to me to use it to align the tines. Yup, I've been a thumbnail adjuster for a while now. Next time, I'll try to shim route.
