This video has motivated me to try & restore my fountain myself! I just moved into a townhouse & the fountain is beautiful but so dirty & worst of all the fountain can’t get any power for some reason after years of running but I’m planning on restoring it myself & planting succulents in it since I can’t use it as a fountain. Fantastic!! I am needing to repair a crack in my huge bowl concrete fountain, and I am SO glad I found Your video!, I will of course need to repaint/stain mine After the repair and I was really Not wanting to have to use bright blue Pool paint 🤦🏼‍♀️ mine is the verde green and black appearance originally. So I will definitely be checking out the stain you used to see if it comes in the color I would like, but if not; I’ll gladly choose your earthy brown stain over pool paint. Fabulous Results!! Hi there, thanks for watching. Glad this video helped. I am looking online and I see the issue you are having. Not sure but it appears the spray cans are now hard to find. To be honest I would prefer the liquid stain in a bottle instead of the spray can. Reason being is that the spray can is foamy, which is not an issue, but the liquid stain can be rolled brushed on a little easier. Make sure to go with a concrete stain for outdoor use and not paint. My suggestion, you might try buying a smaller bottle as a test sample and try it on the back side or underneath where nobody will see. Just to test it until you are comfortable with the results. Hope this helps. Good luck with your project!

This is exactly what I am trying to accomplish with a very similar fountain suffering from hardwater calcium build up. I would recommend to first use VINEGAR and a wire brush to remove the calcium buildup. This got mine back down to the base concrete. But, my fountain also seems to have had the water leach through the concrete and ultimately caused some of the surface to disolve or chip away. So, I have some stained concrete and some plain concrete showing. I think I can use layering and blotting to help mask those areas. Thanks for the wonderful video!
@mikemcmillen1253
@mikemcmillen1253 Жыл бұрын
Yo Ed, what acidity % level vinegar did you use? Regular household vinegar is 5% and I’m thinking that won’t do the trick. Amazon has a variety of vinegars with different acidity levels, thoughts?
@edfritz
@edfritz Жыл бұрын
@@mikemcmillen1253 Mike, I just used regular household vinegar from the grocery store in a spray bottle. I used that with a brass wire brush. I gave it a thorough coating of vinegar and let it sit for a few minutes as it fizzed and bubbled. I gave it another spray and then used the wire brush to help break down some of the thicker build-up. I gave it a rinse with some water and then repeated the spraying and brushing once more for good measure. In my case, I was able to get most of the calcium off and out of the nooks and crannies, although a whitish "stain" still coats some of the concrete it doesn't appear that any calcium is to blame. I did let it dry and sprayed more vinegar on the white area, but I don't see any acid/base reaction (bubbling and fizzing), it may simply be the salt residue from combining an acid and base on a very porous surface. I may try to use a power washer to see if that will clear it up more, but I may just start applying the stain over it instead. WARNING: Don't use CLR! It says on the label not to use it on colored concrete, stone, marble, etc...I think that is just too strong of an acid. If you use stronger vinegar you may want to spot-test it first. CLR is very strong and you should be careful what you use it on. Although, vinegar is pretty safe (you can even drink it). I also used it straight without watering it down any. I hope that helps you! Calcium is tough stuff when it's hard and dry but it doesn't hold up to vinegar well at all. Oh, and you may want to give your project a good water rinse afterward so the Ph of the surface is neutral and doesn't interfere with the coatings or color. Best of luck!
@mikemcmillen1253
@mikemcmillen1253 Жыл бұрын
@@edfritz Thanks, for Ph neutral, just rinsed with water?
@edfritz
@edfritz Жыл бұрын
@@mikemcmillen1253 Yeah, water will neutralize enough, but you can add a little baking soda to it for good measure. I'm okay with a good sense, though. They also sell products to do the same thing, but really just adding a little baking soda into a spray bottle of water and you accomplish the same thing.

They say you should use distilled or filtered water for fountains to avoid mineral buildups and to cut back on algae. I know it can be super time consuming to fill a fountain using a bucket & filtered water, or gallons of distilled water , but maybe you won't have to do this restoration thing again if you do? I imagine if you keep allowing the minerals to build up, over time you would lose whatever details your fountain has , as it would get almost impossible to sand it down enough. That's really cool though. I like that these paints say they won't peel or chip and that they look like natural stone. I wonder if I can get resin paints that look like limestone. I bought a small Resin fountain, and within days it was peeling... I almost returned it, (and I did buy another to replace it, but now I will prob keep both) but they want you to pay the shipping and a restocking fee, even though it was their fault due to a defective product. Thanks for showing this. It gives me hope that maybe I can restore mine, even though it isn't concrete. Maybe I can even make it look better than the mfg did.

Hi there, yes unfortunately the calcium continues to build up. I occasionally take a Brillo / scouring pad to wipe away the build up. It's sort of my regular maintenance in between re-sealing periods. I will usually reseal once every couple years so long as I go out and do a wipe down once every couple weeks or so. Thanks for watching, and for the comment.

Thanks so much for watching. I would recommend using any concrete stain, either in spray or in a bottle. For mine I chose an earth tone brown color. If you want a glossy finish similar to the one I used you'll need a good stain sealer. The stain and sealer I chose was for outdoor use. If you are unsure of the result you can always try a test stain and seal on an area that is not visible, such as the bottom of the statue. There isn't any magic to it, just jump right in and have fun with it. I wish you well and good luck on your project.

Hi Carrie, thanks for watching. I did everything over the course of two days. I added the water on the third day. Since there was dry time in between applications of the three stain coats and two sealer coats I thought it best to let it dry pretty well before adding water. I think it will all depend on how many coats you will need. You may be able to do this faster if fewer coats are needed for your project. Hope this helps.

Hi there, thanks for watching! I actually let it dry until the next day. I added water mid day the next day so I would say it was about 18 hours of dry time. However, the sealer I used only needed about 4-6 hours to dry but I felt better to give it more time. I would just double check the recommendations listed on the bottle of your sealer. Hope this helps!

You have inspired me to try this on my fountain. Question for you regarding the hardwired pump. Did you paint the inside of the fountain where the water is stored? In the basin my hardwired pump sits along with a stop for the hardwired light. How did you paint around these items?
@HowTo-D2
@HowTo-D2 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Henrietta, thanks for your comment. Yes I did a little staining on the inside as well but not as much as the exterior area. I didn't put as much on that area because it would be filled with water and you can't really appreciate the color in the basin anyway. So I think I only did one coat of stain on the inside and sealed it as well. I put the pump inside a large ziplock bag (but any plastic bag would do) and used some tape to tie (seal) the top of the bag to the cord. Just to keep the stain and seal off of the pump and cord. It did dangle there and did touch the wet stain and seal but it was in the plastic bad and didn't harm anything. I moved the bag around a little while it dried. Hope this helps. Good luck on your project!

I want my 2 tier water fountain to look like light gray cement to match what I have, will the same product in clear do the same seal protection? Will it seal over Rustoleum outdoor paint? I'm trying to make it easier to wipe the bowl clean rather than using a scrub brush and bleach twice a summer if the water additives don't get rid of it. I also want to seal all my garden pedestals and 2 cement benches the same way. So the Rustoleum product in the spray is different than the large square can?
@HowTo-D2
@HowTo-D2 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for watching. In terms of the sealer, you should be able to apply that to whatever natural concrete you have to provide a nice water barrier. The water will bead up and run off nicely and should help with wipe downs. In terms of using outdoor paint on fountains and concrete, most of my experience has been with staining but also from what I've learned through online research it is best to try various staining techniques instead of actual paint with this type of water application. I am always a huge fan of trying a test spot first. I would recommend testing it on an area of your fountain that is not really visible, such as at the back or the underside. Use the stain, paint sealer, etc. as you would like to try and give it a test run to see how it performs after running water over it many times. Hope this helps. Best of luck with your projects.

How do u prevent water leakage from the fountain
@HowTo-D2
@HowTo-D2 2 жыл бұрын
If a fountain has a good solid basin with no cracks it should not leak. If yours is leaking you may need to repair any cracked areas so that no water will seep out. If there is a leak in a hidden area you may want to try putting on some Flex Seal. That stuff hardens like rubber and will create a great water barrier. Hope this helps.

How many cans of the Stain Spray did you end up using? I'm in Canada and I can't just walk in the store to get it so wonder if one can will do. Mine fountain is a bit bigger than the one you refinished. Thanks.

Hi there, thanks for watching. I used two cans with just a little left over in the second can. That gave me three full coats for the size of my fountain. The dimensions of my fountain: 5ft tall (152cm) x 4ft (122cm) at the widest point and the basin is 2ft deep (61cm). Hope this helps.

Where did you get your spray????????
@HowTo-D2
@HowTo-D2 2 жыл бұрын
It appears the spray cans with that color are no longer available and Amazon changed the product at the same link I had to a clear type. To be honest I would prefer the liquid stain in a bottle instead of the spray can if I had to do it all over again. Reason being is that the spray can is foamy, which is not an issue, but the liquid stain can be rolled brushed on a little easier. I would recommend going with a concrete stain for outdoor use (and not paint). You might try buying a smaller bottle as a test sample and try it on the back side or underneath where nobody will see. Just to test it until you are comfortable with the results. Hope this helps. Good luck with your project!

Great comment. I agree there may be some value in hiring someone for this type of work. The issue for my situation (for this fountain), some of the labor quotes I received was about the same price as buying a brand new fountain of the same kind. That's when it really didn't make sense to me. I'm sure there are plenty of other situations where it does makes sense to hire someone. Thanks for the comment and good luck out there!
