I just wanted to say thank you man. I have generally just used the steam function on our iron, but I haven't been getting the results I wanted, and since I've got lots of 59fifties now so I decided to follow this tutorial as closely as I could (we haven't got a tea pot but I got a coffee steaming jug and put it on the hot plate to give me a constant source of steam), and my Cubs City Connect hat is looking beautiful... Almost as good as my favourite shape, 39thirty, which are basically not available here in Australia. Thank you, from a cap enthusiast down under!

Hey man, I am a collector of close to 100 59fifty caps that I mix up and wear daily, but I probably actually wear only about 50-60 of them at best, due to imperfections in the cap(s). I found your videos about a week ago and I have watched a bunch of them and have applied many of your tips to a huge amount of those caps since then and I have been able to reshape, resize, and recurve them into fitting me properly, while looking like a fresh new cap in the process. So thanks man! I plan to always use your tips to any new cap that I get!

these are quality tips, thanks for the help. is it just me when i say new era’s polyester hats are so much tougher to shape to your head? their wool hats were my favorite in terms of fit yet they never sell ‘em anymore
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 4 жыл бұрын
You are welcome, thanks... and I would indeed give wool an edge in terms of shaping and manipulating - but the poly is not terrible, in my opinion. And you will find that many NE caps are still offered in wool - mostly the collections that sit outside of the official/authentic collections. If you search terms like "Wool Standard 59Fifty", that was a collection of MLB and NBA fitteds that were 100% wool. There is always a collection or two that surprises me by being all wool.

@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 Жыл бұрын
Cool, good to hear that I helped out with the collection. With the high crown models, it's really tough to reduce the height - the fabric has to go somewhere, so if you compress it a lot you end up with folds behind the front two panels. Thanks for the comments.

I've just started wearing fitted caps and this is fantastic. Thank you! One thing I'm finding a little annoying is the back of the cap is flat and not maintaining a rounded shape from a side profile view... Do you have a fix for that? Thanks in advance!
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 4 жыл бұрын
Hey cool, thanks for the comment. The back four panels are of course "unstructured", so they do tend to lose that rounded shape - there's usually a 'ridge' that forms right above the sweatband too. The sweatband is stiffer and keeps its shape. Sorry if this sounds oversimplified, but does it still look flat when you've pulled it down into a good fit on your head? The front two panels pull the back four forward because of the structure in the crown.
@SlickNik305
@SlickNik305 4 жыл бұрын
@@dreinthe616 Thanks for the fast reply Doug. Ah, I see... And no not over simplified but in fact your suggestion pinpointed the problem. I wear my 59Fifty pretty high from the front like almost resting on my hairline to slightly low at the back. This of course is creating that dip in the back panels. When I do wear it low profile then yes - fully rounded. It's my choice of style that's causing the issue here!

How's it going Doug? Great videos on your channel, keep the videos coming. I do all the steps like you do on this video. But I add an extra step. After your last step, I put a bump cap under my cap and spray (Aleene's) fabric stiffener spray on my cap to help keep the shape of the cap and help with the wrinkles on the back panels of the cap.
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good tip for managing the fabric appearance, thanks for posting. I sometimes avoid the sprays that might obstruct any of the natural ventilation through the fabric - like a waterproofing spray which is designed to do just that. Not totally familiar with a stiffening spray like that, but I will check it out, thanks for your support too!

Hey Doug I'm hoping you see this even though it's an older vid, I know you point out the creases a lot but my problem is on the side/back panels of some hats I get a dented or sucked in sort of look. It's very noticeable on a black hat that I wear and it just drives me crazy I'm thinking maybe a towel and steam might do the trick?
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, got it - and I see the same thing on some caps - mostly where it draws in just over the sweatband in the back. I do have a new vid coming up soon that should cover some of this, and the towel/steam approach can help a little bit - best if you have a hat jack or some other way to trap the towel inside the cap while steaming. Thanks for the question, stay tuned!

Thx anyway ✌️

Hey, good question - I don't spend too much time with snaps, mainly because of that issue (plastic edge discomfort). This is kind of a strange suggestion, but I'm thinking that there might be some sort of elastic fabric sleeve you could slip over it, I'm just not sure where to find something of the right size. Just an idea, thanks for watching!
@bigview

@@dreinthe616 thx for your advice. I like your tutorials, you show really good hacks for caps I simple had to look by searching for my issue. In Germany we don't got tutorials for this good like yours. I googled my question a lot now but I think too that nobody did mind this issue cause I found nothing. Not even leather straps or things like that to simple replace it. I do wonder a lot about that, I do not find any other simple snap or strap for a replacing. Well one thing, like you said, there are soft pieces to put inside hats or caps to get it tighter when a head is to small. I think this could may fix my issue. I will give this a try. Thx for your answer ✌️ you got a good channel for all Caplovers 👍 I like.

I've actually come back to this video, I've got a cubs London games 9forty but the logo is quite big and forms a straight edge across the buckram. It irritates a small portion of scar tissue on the front of my head. Will try with the spoon to make it more rounded or domed in that area.
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, sometimes a large logo combined with the center panel seam on the front creates a very stiff area that can really press and irritate the forehead. Sometimes you can shape it just enough, other times there's so much stitching that it's hard to move it even a little bit. Thanks, I hope this gives some relief.

Hey Doug! Quick question, how does a broken-in 59Fifty compare to a 59Fifty Low Crown that's fresh out of the box? I love the 59Fifty but unfortunately I don't have the tools to shape it the way you do in the video. Is the Low Crown like a "pre-shaped" version of the cap, or am I being mistaken? Thanks for the content!
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 Жыл бұрын
Well, I'd say that no matter how much you shape a standard, it will almost always have more volume in the crown than a Low Profile. It's actually why I prefer the standard - that extra volume keeps the cap off my upper forehead, which can sometimes get irritated from the buckram in the Low Pro. But if you don't mind the shallow crown, then the Low Pro would be ready to wear for you. Thanks for the question!

Hmmm, that's a good question, but it's tough to come up with a good alternative because the HJ is so purposefully built for the job. Are there any regional "maker" or craft websites where people might make and sell them (e.g. Etsy)? But some of those are expensive as well, so it may be just worth it to pay international shipping and get the original Hat Jack.

No, if it’s an EFF cap, I would just roll with it - since the buckram and other details are soft it’s pretty well immune to shaping like this. Now that the hats are made of polyester and not wool will they shrink and or stretch at all? Should I buy the hat that fits me just right in the store or do I need to account for future shrinkage or stretching? I’ve never owned a fitted hat before.

You should def check out a few videos on my channel - one newer one is my 'Frequently Asked Questions' about fitteds - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptyHl8uhr522l2Q.html - but I also have several others about material (wool vs poly), size variation, etc. Trying on at the store is the best way because of the variation in cap sizing, and remember that you'll get a little more space if you plan to curve the visor. Good luck!

Hey thanks, man... For what you are trying to do, I think you should watch this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZpmDdLeCv7isnqs.html - where I show how to use a simple form to give a new shape to the crown. You can heat it up with a hair dryer or teapot, and you can ball up a towel or T-shirt to form the cap - good luck!

hi mr. I Just got a 5950 cap as a gift... But it's a little big size to my head, do you have a method.. For shrinking down a little.. Like 1/2 an inch? Thanks

Can't shrink the customary hat size by 1/2 of an inch, but you might be talking about the circumference of the cap. Please watch my video "Why so much Shrinking?" to find out more, thanks.

If you have an artwork file, Lids stores will digitize it for $25 for use on their machines. I think if you buy more than 12 they are 50% off and they are made at the HQ plant, not the store. Not sure if anything changed since Lids was acquired, but there might be other options out there as well.

I think I know what you're describing... kind of creates a "chef's hat" look from the front? Usually I hit the front with steam, then hold my thumbs inside those areas and press outward while it cools. I hope that works, thanks.

If I use this tehnique for knock the squarenes of the hat, will it last, even after I wash the cap? Thank you.
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 Жыл бұрын
It won’t last forever, you may need to refresh it again over time. It comes down to how much you can shape it while heated - that’s what creates the “memory” of the material like when they blocked it at the factory.

No, I actually stick with my normal 7-1/2, and sometimes get a 7-3/8 and stretch it a little bit. My basic rule is that it's easier to stretch than to shrink a cap - there's just nowhere for the extra material to go. Check out my cap stretching videos if you like, thanks for the question!

Hello, I'm new here. I planning to buy a 59fifty and i want to bend the visor just like you did. So i should choose a bigger size? My size is 7 1/4.
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 4 жыл бұрын
If you know your size well, I do not recommend going larger if you bend the visor. Bending the visor actually gives you a little more room in most cases, see my video on shrinking ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n5Z9ns55tbCcpok.html ) where I talk about how curving the visor actually gives more room because its closer to the shape of most heads. I'd say try your current size first, thanks.

Biggest thing to remember is that New Era caps vary a lot - most of the cap is still made by hand, so even the same sizes can fit differently from cap to cap. That’s probably the biggest reason the LP feels better - it’s probably a slightly larger size 7, and the standard might be on the small side. Thanks for the question.

Would this technique work on a Zephyr SnapBack hat that’s 35% wool and 65% acrylic?
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 4 жыл бұрын
Steam will work with those exterior materials. The rest depends on the buckram in the front two panels, and the substrate material of the visor. New Era has stiff buckram that can be shaped, and a fiber/resin visor material that holds a shape very well. Not sure about either of those on a Zephyr cap, but thanks for the question.

@@dreinthe616 Cool. Thanks, man. Thank you for your response! No one ever gets back with me. So I have this University of Hawai'i snapback hat that the crown is just way too high, but I think my biggest problem is the "UH 808" patching. Maybe not problem, but *maybe* a fear? @@itsroads206 Seems like the link is not working anymore, but if you're talking about a patch or embroidery that extends high on the cap, those are really tough to shape, probably the stiffest elements in the cap.

Based on their construction, most of these steps should work about the same... the buckram under the front two panels is the key to shaping it, and the visor material might be a bit different, but steam will help you work with both, thanks for the question.
