I had the S-80. I Refoamed them and refreshed the crossover. They were great speakers. I sold them for an offer I couldn't refuse.

The only problem with these speakers is that the sweet spot for listeners position is very narrow , but while you are there , you are in heaven . Keep them tilted backwards a few degrees - the bass will improve at longer listening distance .

Your review is spot on. For its time this were very good and still kinda compact but big sounding speakers. Back then this was still categorised as a large bookshelve speaker,but as accessories there was a speaker stand made of aluminium available. The Seas bass drivers of the 25F series (25F-EW,25F-EWR and 25F-EWX) were very popular OEM chassis and they are found in speakers from B&O up to Sony and Wega around the mid seventies. The EW/EWR types are optimised for close cabinets,while the EWX version has a stronger magnet and was intended for use in ported speakers. It was mostly sold with Seas speaker kits. In fact the EW-type is still in production today and you find it in the actual product catalog from Seas. It ist nowadays called A26RE4 and it is by no stretch of the imagination a bargain chassis as the older chassis of the family were. The thing with the old EW/EWR and the newer A26 types is that they have a smooth frequency response that reaches into the midrange on one side and that they benefit basswise from a large enclosure,easily double that of the S-75. Its because the free air resonance frequency of this chassis is very low (around 25 Hz). So you can built rather big 2-ways that reach into realy deep bass while having all the nice sound attributes of a good papercone up to the midrange. A few high end speaker producer still making 2-way based on this chassis. The lower midrange cone and the midrange dome are Phillips/Valve chassis. The cone midrange is the AD5060W with additional enclosure,the dome the at the time widely used AD211. Like the Seas bass driver this midrange dome had a very favorable price/value relation back then,especially when bought in large quantities. The tweeter is a Peerless KO10DT,later called 810665. Also widely used by many speaker manufacturers. The crossover is a,typical for the time,as simple as it gets 6db network,except for the tweeter which has a 12dB/Oct high- pass. But there are additional parts for level adjustment and impedanzcorrection. A additional serial RC load is in parallel to the crossover,because otherwise the load the amp "sees" would be very low impedance higher than 5kHz. Well,as you pointed out all chassis used in this speaker are of above average quality for its time. Not top class in quality but certainly among the best when it comes to bang for the buck at that time. The soft filters used leave wide overlaps between the chassis. Certainly the reason behind that "focus" is a bit lacking and that there is a bit of iffyness in the mid- range. However to address this would mean a way more complicated and expensive crossover. Anyway,personaly i think this is a bit of a lazy design that entirely hinges on chassis quality. One could do noticable better with this set of chassis. However,at the time the S-75 was - pretty untypical for B&O - not a expensive speaker and pretty good value as it is.

The Beovox S45-2 's are pretty great too and known for their midrange clarity and airy top end, always wanted to try the S-75's for the additional bass, many say the additional bass comes at a compromise of clarity. They are definitely revealing, no great for lesser quality recordings.

Seas drivers are good and I've used Peerless tweeters in projects I've done with very good results.B&O made some good quality speakers.

Thanks for the casual and informative review. I got lucky in the early 2000s and picked up a mint pair from an estate sale for $100 US dollars. When I lifted up the left speaker to move it to the car the receipt was under the speaker. Brand new in the mid 1970s it read 799.99 from a local (Rochester NY) Hi-Fi dealer. When they are in good condition the rosewood shines and the aluminum accent really looks classy. I do enjoy the sound when I use them, your comments on the sound are very accurate, an easy speaker to listen to all day, no fatigue. So I am the 2nd owner and yes I did get both grills =). On a side note I use an empty paper towel tube up to my ear to listen to each driver to make sure they work when purchasing used vintage speakers. Keep up the entertaining reviews, Cheers!

Great review. Good use of sound descriptive terms. You could learn something about sound in general, even if you don't care about these speakers in particular. Always something to learn from Kelvin. Only one observation: you might be surprised from how much some vintage speakers can benefit from an analog source (turntable, cassette deck).

Those speakers DO look pretty impressive. I owned a pair of KLH-5's while in college. They were popular in states in the 70's. What was amazing is that they survived in-tact over three years...along with my power amp.

I've enjoyed your reviews, sir, since I started getting into audio/stereo hobby late 70 - to 80's. The same Philips 2" AD2110SQ squawker (midrange) was common at the time. I used those in three DIY speaker designs. One was with two D'Appolito style, tweeter between two vertically. Later that model changed a bit, no "spider" 8 leg diffuser/protection on dome. It was fine (at the time) with 3 way crossover, 750-4000 Hz range.

I still love my old Duntech Crown Prince speakers. Had the filters recapped last year and it sound great.

Crazy as it sounds I picked up a pair of these for free at the side of the road today.

These were the fourth o fifth pair of speakers I got on my audiophile journey (I now have a couple hundreds, I reckon). I immediately fell in love with them and they are still amongst the five favourite of my collection, when it comes to listening enjoyment. With the grilles on, they are the best looking speakers ever made: with a few distinctive elements, but sober and classy. The thin metal layer on the edges covered with the wood veneer is superb, only outmatched by the delicate inclinations of the waffle and grilles, along with the small plaques with the brand.

my idea of perfection and heaven. I would die for them.. Just the look is fantastic. I give up looking at prices because they are probably thousands to buy which is in my dreams.

Yes that midrange is a Phillips driver. I used them in a speaker kit project I built for my O Level DT practical exam in 1982. Mine had a paper dome and a matched tweeter from Phillips too. As you said good mid-fi level. The bass unit was a very sturdy Volt 8 inch unit and I actually went to see the factory and designer back then, which they still make! Yes, you are making sense! I agree that a first class front end makes the world of difference and will bring the best out of vintage equipment. And as you say it might even be more enjoyable than using with ultra clean new equipment.

Kelvin you need to recap the crossovers. Major improvements coming if you do. Also air core inductors.

FYI here in Denmark the children which parents had money in the 70-80' (and B&O.. a lot of B&O here at that time, even in working class houses) are selling out... a lot of old B&O stuff for a bargin.... After your review I gona pick up the Beovox S75 next time some are for sale close by... or Beovox S45-2 as these are a real bargin and there are lot for sale.... so Kelvin it's your fault I'm gone down that route :-) ...I just bought a reworked Accuphase E-202 amp... it's a joy... now the 'quist' is on for matching speakers, tomorrow I get a set of Dali 18...but I'll try out diffrent speakers.

That Peerless soft dome tweeter was a great driver that never got the credit it was due. It's response was inherently flat and reasonably extended. Furthermore it could play down to lower frequencies even as low as 1500 hz which made it a great choice for two way speakers. It was also more efficient than the competition with excellent power handling. To top it off it was inexpensive and worked well as a replacement tweeter for most any application. I used to sell them for $25 in a audio hobby store I used to work for back in 79. They sounded nicely detailed yet smooth as butter.

I have some S60s and listen to them every day, with a subwoofer. They look exactly the same with the covers off and sound great.

Very much like Philips drivers. Especially the dome "squawker" I built speakers using Philips drivers back in the mid 80's. Quality stuff. Peerless makes nice tweeters, as well.

A.D 2010 not the 2011. these are 4 ohm. Who would think of using 2 8 ohm drivers, then 2 4 ohm drivers. B .O. 1977 . You reviewed them, Sweet sound for the soal..thank you.

They are fine speakers. I bought a pair of B&O S 60. I bought them for 400 Swedish Kr. 30£. I tested them with Mark Knopfler's Heart of Gold. They really give me that good feeling, and they didn't let me down on any point.

Great channel Kelvin. If you get a chance to discuss or review transmission line speakers it'd be good to get your thoughts. I have some IMF RSPM Mark IV speakers I love. They're huge though.

One very nice Philips 2 inch high power dome squawker (middle range) AD0210/11Sq(4/8). Very good! The other is very similar to AD5060Sq but the rear box is longer than the original from Philips. It could be interesting if that box would be remove to see what driver is!

I had a pair of these, powered by an ITT Schaub Lorenz 4500 receiver. I got tired of replacing the Seas drivers and wound up selling them.

Those have nice drivers,,,,,,I have Seas & Peerless in my Boston Acoustics A 150 & Snell E II USA Speakers which sound nice (East Coast Sound) and natural an not a lot of money. Not a lot of bass but enough as you describe it. No fatigue and can listen for hours. Forget I got a pair of B&O S-45 that I almost forgot I had bought a few years ago..................have to go and listen to them!

Check the capacitors in the crossovers . Those SEAS bass drivers could go as low as 30Hz . Rarely you could find a ported speaker which could go as low . As for the sealed/closed design , it gives precision/accuracy to the bass . S75 are great speakers if all drivers and crossovers are in good condition .

Both mid-range are Philips, I had them in home build speakers. BTW, if you see an octagonal speaker basket on a vintage driver, 9 out of 10 times it is Philips. They are actually very good, if they sound iffy it is probably the cross over that is holding them back.

It's a Phillips/Peerless shmorgishborg. B&O really stuffed a ton of drivers on one baffle.

The chamber enclosed driver at 3:17 is a Philips mid-range. I have two of those on each of my speakers.

These midrange's (upper midrange) are indeed Philips. I got original Philips speakers (457's) from '76 with them. Amazing speakers for what they are and the best midrange I have heard. Yes I said it

The two mid ranges are both Philips drivers, respectively the AD 5060 and the very good and famous dome midrange 0211 in this case as the dome is silk. Bang and Olufsen used a lot of Philips drivers in their speakers.....😉

Nice interesting Video. Since u took off the drivers would had loved to see the internal of the spesker box construction. The seas Driver is a damn good one used the worlds most popular 2 way spesker ever Dynaco A25. If one wishes one can build a newer Seas A26kit superb 2 way. Money for nothing is a track that I find it needs damn good speskers or I won’t enjoy

9:47 - this speakers are also 3-way ones ) that's a deal with "phase link" design. that one extra driver is not in between of two other but plays with them overlapping their frequencies.

Be careful if the bass drivers are down and need replacing they cost £130 plus now. Two speaker gone or down you spending 2 thrids of speaker cost. I guess thats the risk with older speakers .

Hi had bang and Olufsen for 40 years ..... now switching for 2 years to other audio.....sansui au 717.. bluesound node 2i ....jbl l00 rega planner 3 schitt phono pre amp and schitt Freya tube preamp..... much much better than bang and olufsen.......but that’s a choice and personal taste....keep on going Kevin..... nice job.....

The magnet on this woofer is small by today's standard. The dome tweeter magnets on my low priced Andrew Jones Pioneer BS-22 speakers are fairly large.

I think that “phase link” driver is also a Philips. If I remember correctly, Infinity used this driver as an actual midrange in their Qb speaker of the late 1970s.

what do you think of Beovox S60? I have a pair of S60 they can get loud and has a lot of bass and looks very similar to the S75 pair you have.

Great review! Lots of interesting comments here too. Vintage speakers can sound really 'correct'. However, I'm not sure they compete with the speed of modern speakers. Some genres of music benefit from modern fast accurate drivers. Also both types have different amplifier requirements.... What did Kevin use with the ls50's? The market for something in between is growing now though. I would like to see you review modern Wharfedales Lintons Kevin!

3:48 yes, they were made by Phillips, thy are in MFB Speakers aswell.

I Looked them up and found that I they are on there intended stands the high and mid section is vertical instead of slanted down so they really were designed with a stand in mind tilted slightly backward. It also says they are supposed to have more bass than the 45-2's Maybe try them through the Preamp section?

at minute 6:00 to reply i can say that you can attach a pc to the amplifier and with a App that generates tones you can hear precisely the band that any driver is commited to with all the frequencies cuts of the crossover, so it begin to be easy to find the driver that works bad or doesn't work at all

My high school bud got one of these and one weekend back in 1987, I spent 4 hours listening the Casey Kasem hosted American Top 40 on them. One of my grestest 80s memories ever. The last time I used them for long listening sessions was back in 1997. Paired with a good amp, no contemporary speaker under 3,000 quid can touch them. You're absolutely right, Kelvin. These speakers will walk over today's volume deficient designs - especially the KEF LS 50s.

When some of the units are down, as you mention, does that indicate need for renovating the electronic components distributing the electricity, that speakers need as they age?

I prefer closed box-bass over BR. It sounds 'softer' but more definition and extention bcs of the 6dB roll-off The mid-dome is a Philips called squawker.

The SEAS bass is the same as the Dynaco A25, revered for its wicked bass, so why not add an aperiodic membrane to this - underneath to be out of sight? I plan to do this soon and make available a parts kit maybe.

I've recently come across some videos about Radiotehnika loudspeakers from the 1980s. Soviet era speakers with lots of die cast drivers and large magnet tweeters in there, and great big oil capacitors in the crossovers. Ever heard of them? Or heard them?

Mate. Try the m100s. Absolutely mind blowing and very under the radar. To me they are almost the perfect speaker. Pair them with a sugden a21 or decent sansui and it's heaven.

Another great Beovox speaker was the M75 .. I used to sell good audio equipment late 70's/ early 80's , I had a customer who had a pair off M75's who was running them with a Mitsubishi 150 watt per channel separate amp/ pre amp combo and was looking to up grade , I ended up getting him up to the Hafler DH 500 amp which was a beefy Mosfet (255x 2) as well as the Hafler DH110 Pre amp. I offered to bring the electronics out and set up. The speakers were mounted on b&o stands which allowed you to adjust the height off the floor as well a the tilt. We raised them till about 16" off the floor. Maybe a tilt which moved the bottom end of the speaker projecting about 25 degrees in front of the top half of the speaker. This Lifted vocals projecting up to a realistic height along with a larger sound stage presentation .Great quick punch on bass with a sweet mid/ top end . Anything from Another one bites the dust to Ravel 's Bolero from start to finish. I was very impressed with all the music we tried and the customer was very pleased. Such a very musical speaker for what was considered to be a Monitor speaker. I was a big fan of a speaker i was selling at the time , Snell type E.'s.. that would have been an interesting comparison and not so sure lol, but i could not get over how fun those M75's were. If S75's sound anything similar to I would concur . Check M75's out if you can find a pair to listen to? I know i would love to listen to them again. Seemed like back then it was about the music , now everyone uses perfectly recorded audiophile records to compare speakers these days . New speakers or many of them seem to sound more antiseptic by comparison to me. All about measurements rather than musicality or fun and engaging music we enjoy listening to from our favorite artists no matter the era it was produced. To this day one of my favorite vocals and one i used for demo was Elton John's " Love Song" off the Tumbleweed Connection LP.. try that one sometime.

I was wondering if you, or a previous owner, have replaced the original electrolytic crossover capacitors in these speakers, if not, then they are very likely to have deteriorated and be out of spec after 45 years. Do you generally look at replacing very old capacitors in your vintage speakers? I know it is a common and often necessary practice, in order to restore the original working condition of vintage speakers, which is something I do myself, using equivalent polypropylene caps. PS. Would you consider doing a video about speaker crossovers and the need to replace worn out, old electrolytic capacitors after 30 or 40 years or more of use?

What‘s your current 2nd hand amp recommendation for 300€ tops?

I've got so similar B&O speakers but the midrange is also a dome speaker, unfortunately the bass drivers sound very tired.

Anyone got any advice on the merits of replacing the capacitors in old speaker crossovers? I'm thinking about re-capping my Ditton 44's.

They were expensive in the day - in 1979 I paid AUD $1000 for these .. not sure what that would be in today's dollars (hate to think lol) .. edit - had to look it up - approx $5,700 .. must have had more money than sense (other way around now ..)

The mid-range driver has to be out of phase you should check for this people try and correct this thinking it's an error it's not the same with the soft dome tweeter should be out of phase with the mid-range the peerless driver can be in phase

Hello, I am from and live in México. I just recently (couple of months at the most) run into your videos. It was a great coincidence that just over a week ago I saw these offered on facebook. Yesterday I bought them for 61 pounds. One paper woofer completely destroyed but otherwise in working condition. Today I ordered a woofer replacement on Ebay USA for 69 dlls+ SH. I connected the one complete speaker to my system and I just love the sound. I am a bit of a DIY guy or pragmatist (is that a word?), I work with what I have. Do you think there is anything that could or should be done to improve these speakers? I found that there is a lot of the stuff that was used in the old days for damping the sound below the carpets in cars but is all bunched up in the top compartment. Is that the way it was intended? do you think additional dampping should be used in all the inner walls of the speaker?, love to see your comments on this...cheers

Nice review. Your videos are certainly making me reappraise makers I have sort of dismissed for some reason over the years (blindly accepting the orthodoxy probably). I’ve noticed you enjoy Sansui. I do too. I bought a pair of sp1500s for £25 about 10 years ago. Knew nothing about them at the time but the fancy fretwork and the solid build seduced me and home they came. For £25 they would be cheap enough even for fire wood so I’m not complaining but they do seem to be an example of how masters of sound engineering can build good cabinets and put in good quality drivers and yet get something very wrong. All the drivers were working as were the controls on the back. Unless I paired them very badly or placed them very badly I struggled to get a pleasing and engaging sound out of them. A real shame as they looked like beasts that would deliver.

In fact it does seem to be a PHILIPS AD0210SQ squawker from the seventies.
