I use to love this movie as a young woman but having watched it as a full fledged woman I have to say Carrie is an awful person. She strings Charles on, cheats on her fiancé with him. Shows up at his wedding only to tell him she is separated from her husband. Which in the scene she says it’s been over for months? Why didn’t she go to him before he was literally at the church ready to get married. She is a manipulative, shallow horrible human being. Sorry, not sorry

I saw watched this movie today for the first time as a 25 years old..and I completely agree with you.. I kept hoping he would get with Fiona .. Carrie is just an awful character throughout

I agree. Carrie never looks really in love with Charles. She just wants to use him. from the beginning to the end.

In the world of the movie, love is no longer enough to justify a romantic relationship. That explains a lot --- including Carrie's and Fiona's characterization. Both are cynical about love. Carrie thinks Charles is "lovely," but that is not enough to keep her from marrying her fiance and his money. Fiona loves Charles, but she is so cynical about love and marriage that she never could bring herself to tell him. Neither woman is a typical rom-com heroine. Yet, I think they are no less desirable or moral in the world of this movie because their choices bring us closer to recognizing what is love when one agrees "not to marry" someone. ... Curiously enough, Carrie started something of a trend. After "Four Weddings," Rachel on "Friends" showed up at Ross's wedding to his next girlfriend. In "My Best Friend's Wedding," Julianne shows up at the wedding of her best friend. There is something questionable in the choice of all three women to show up at the wedding. Yet, for all that, they are no less desirable and worthy rom-com heroines --- Carrie for the reasons mentioned above, Rachel because by the time of Ross's wedding we know she can't leave well enough alone, and Julianne because it's the effervescent Julia Roberts playing the psycho ex-girlfriend.

Carrie and Fiona are quite realistic choices for Charles. Also, Charles went through women like crazy. They all deserve each other. So, don't presume to pass judgement.
