Surprised you didn't make the obvious extra step to saying most of England's attacking threat has come from Saka on the right, so if we continue to rely on him, any Dutch turnover will turn into a Gakpo threat... seems like even great impetus to get the balance in the team sorted and make sure we get the left side firing.

The biggest thing you are missing here is that Southgate played a back 3 with SAKA as the RWB against Switzerland. If he does the same thing against the Dutch, Gakpo will have loads of space to receive the ball in and run into. The question you ask at the end kind of assumes that Southgate will revert back to a back 4. If that's the case, the answer to your question is Kyle Walker will play RB, just like against France in the WC. But then he'll be back to square 1 with no width in the team because he refuses to play anyone comfortable running down the left wing. In all likelihood, England will play a 3-4-3, just like against the swiss and pray that Walker can cover an insane amount of space to close down Gakpo.

We've got Kyle Walker. The one defender who gives players like Gapko nightmares.

These comments really underrate gakpo, he was played out of position for liverpool. He's not a system player hes a direct and progressive lw(not st or false 9 or rw). He's not a system player just a really talented winger thats not utilised for his club.

One thing you've overlooked and which doesn't factor in... Southgate is unbelievably lucky. Which means, sure, Gakpo will probably score, but then Bellingham, Kane, Saka or Foden bangs one in from a million yards out and it's backs to the wall for penalties. Think I've described Wednesday's game there.

cody was underwhelming for the first two thirds of the season, but after a chat with Klopp he started using his physicality much more and was our best attacker for the final third of the season. He's clearly taken that into the tournament.

RE that last point, we played against Mitrovic, Hojlund and Sesko in the group stages, so we're more than familiar with the striker being the opposition's main man. As for left wingers, last world cup we silenced Sarr and Mbappe. Also against Switzerland the defence was very disciplined and organised. We'll be fine.

LFC fan and I don't think Walker will have many problems defending 1v1. Key to beating ENG full backs is playing one-twos. So, if Simons and/or Depay come close to play this way, then there is a chance. And yes, Trent should be playing as a right back and spray passes to marauding Rashford, Kane, Saka or Gordon, but...

I don't worr worry quite so much about Gakpo, because he is the only attacking player the Dutch have who seems to be really in form - so, he rarely actually looks all that dangerous (until Weghorst comes on) becauase he's got no-one to link up with in the final third. And also because.... Kyle Walker. There might be a case for him playing more through the middle against us, just because he won't get much mileage surging to the byline to try to get in a cross or a cutback. If they do attack in the same way again, I suspect the major effect might be to channel our build-up into different areas of the pitch. Against the Swiss, Saka was the only one making any impact for us, so we fell to giving him the ball every time we got it; and, good as he is, he does occasionally tryi to run through a defender and get dispossessed. If the Dtuch double-team him, and make that work better than the Swiss did, I can see a lot of quick counter-attacks down the left flank starting from Saka having his pokcet picked.... and that may lead to us actually trying to move the ball forward through the middle of the park, or down the left - which wouldn't be at all a bad thing. (If only we had Shaw and Gordon starting....)
