They had a great relationship but the chemistry between Tom Baker and Romana 2 (Lalla Ward) was electric and very saucy, in a discreet sort of way. Possibly helped by the fact that they were in a relationship in real life at the time.

@schubertuk4 жыл бұрын
The TARDIS wasn't really shown very much during Doctor Who's original run. In fact, before the 4th Doctor you barely got out of the console room. And shortly after Peter Davison's first season, again you barely saw the rest of the TARDIS - not even the whole console room for Sylvester McCoy's last season. So it is primarily the 4th Doctor's tenure that enlarged the TARDIS. Therefore NuWho is not so different old series. Mostly the TARDIS's huge interior is just alluded to. We get to see a wardrobe in The Christmas Invasion. But The Doctor's Wife & Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS (both Matt Smith stories) do give a reasonable view.

I wish they had more of these moments in the rebooted series, where the Doctor isn't running around and talking at 100 miles an hour. A scene where the Doctor and companion are just hanging out in the TARDIS, where nothing is at stake.

This console room perfectly fits Tom Baker's incarnation of the character. Wish they'd used it longer than they did. It also features one of my all-time favourite scenes, in which the Doctor uses a few boxes to explain to Leela how the TARDIS is bigger on the inside.

I remember reading an interview with (I think) Robert Holmes, who said that they intended to use the wood paneled console room in the 15th season ("Horror of Fang Rock" to "Invasion of Time"), but that in between seasons, the set was dismantled and put into a storage unit that got flooded by a rainstorm. The paneling had gotten warped and it would cost too much money to repair, so they just had the Doctor go back to the original console room. Truly a pity.

Although it's only seen in FOUR stories (and only maybe five episodes in total) it was THE Tardis set for MONTHS when the show was on once a week for 22 minutes. I had no idea Classic Who actually showed beyond the TARDIS' control room. New Who should do this a lot more, feels homey, gives the idea that the Doctor could actually live in it cause (s)he probably _does_
@schubertuk4 жыл бұрын
The reason they avoid doing so was succinctly summed up by RTD - the whole point of the TARDIS is to "get to the story" - and really should be no more than a sort of camper van - minimum comfort - enough to survive - as soon as it becomes the story - the Doctor has less and less motivation to get out and adventure. They don't want the Doctor too comfortable in the TARDIS - they want him fidgeting, restless, and can't wait to land and go somewhere else.
@martymclean37634 жыл бұрын
You see so many TARDIS rooms in Classic Who! There's an entire First Doctor story where they never leave the TARDIS + there's a Fourth Doctor scene which takes the piss out of re-using sets due to budget lol.

@@schubertuk That excuse is utter bafflegab and nothing more. The motivation lies in the quest for knowledge the righting of wrongs on a cosmic scale and having a bit of fun in the process. There can still be the TARDIS herself(oh..my dear old thing..)that can become the story-or an integral part of it. And you need to look no further than the self quarantining and complaints that the wealthy and celebrities bemoan about being forced to remain in their opulent mansions completer with their own saunas,heated swimming pools,theaters and so on. And if they are itching to be able to leave such comforts then there is absolutely no issue of my wan-I mean "The Doctor" wanting to get out to explore and experience the wonders of all space/time and not simply lounge about inside of even the most luxurious interiors that the Tardis may have.
@StillJustDreaming4 жыл бұрын
We do hear about parts of the Tardis in the newer series sometimes, even if we don't get to see it. We know there's a library, that may or may not have a swimming pool in it, a wardrobe with clothes to fit for all sorts of time periods, plus there's the fact that the companions have bedrooms of their own (which may have bunk beds with ladders, as well as disappear at the Tardis' will). I do like seeing the rooms from time to time, but I think if it happened all the time it would lose the novelty and excitement of those rare occurrences.

You know, I would play the hell out of a video game set in the TARDIS, where there's no enemies, no plot, and all you do is wander around checking stuff out. Ideally, the designers would include handcrafted recreations of several different console rooms, along with other locations seen or mentioned in various episodes. (I.e. the wardrobe, the pool, the boot cupboard, etc.) The rest of the TARDIS' infinite structure would be procedurally generated, and might possibly reconfigure itself from time to time just to keep you on your toes.

Mr. Baker will always be THE Doctor in my eyes. Just like SJS will always be THE companion. I first started watching back in the late 80's when reruns were being shown on PBS. The 4th Doctor was my introduction to the franchise and he made a permanent impression on me of what the character is supposed to be. My number two Doctor is probably #10.

Back in the 1980's when watching this episode for the first time on my local PBS station, I had never seen the first two Doctor's control room. So, I was very impressed that there was an old style control console room on board to fly the ship.

Every time I watch this scene, I wonder how Tom Baker isn't sweltering under that outfit, especially with the studio lights! The longer his tenure runs, the more and more casual he gets, like open collars, fewer layers, and wearing the scarf without wrapping it totally around his neck.

speaking of Chibs... y'know how Doctor Who is supposed to be extremely northern with the (ugh) "fam"... well this era is the only time that Doctor Who has been properly northern... both Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen being scousers. So much of why Four succeeded was having Sladen first. She was outstanding with Pertwee, and better with Baker. Her return in NuWho's season 2 episode School Reunion was a revelation. It introduced a central concept...that the Doctor doesn't hate losing nearly as much as he hates loss. It also opened the door for what she'd long deserved...her own series. Sladen was taken far too soon,

Only if it has a proper console with enough knobs and switches on it. I could never understand how that fiddly little thing could take the place of the original console. "come to think of it, it IS the old one." so was the one when Matt Smith found it in his episode... wait so is the secondary control room always the shape of the previous primary control room?
@OzBaxter3 жыл бұрын
No, there are multiple Console Rooms throughout. The one here is never seen before this episode. The "old one" before Tom would have been the big Hartnell original back in the pilot. Baker's is used up through Seventh Doctor. Then McGann's massive beauty (which might have been a remodeled Hartnell console room). Then Eccleston/Tennant corral. Then Smith's toyroom. Is his second one remodeled from the toyroom look, or a new altogether? Long story short, just because you can change the "desktop theme" of the rooms, doesn't mean they are all the same one room throughout. As evidenced by them showing us this one with Four.
