Concept Art Tutorial: Painting Environments
Concept Art Focus: Landscapes
Concept Artists are visual storytellers. We have the power to communicate vast amounts of information in the details of our paintings-ultimately engineering the way that our audience thinks, feels and experiences our work.
Landscapes and environments are powerful vehicles for conveying mood and tone, and also at hinting at where our characters are at in the storyline.
When it comes to creating atmosphere and mood: colour and light are everything. Step inside my process as I balance warm and cool colours, and use light in dramatic ways to engineer this environment to serve the storyline.

That was, hands down, the most impressive display of environmental creativity that I’ve seen recorded. Remarkably enough as much as I’d love to see it done in real time, the time lapse added to the experience of seeing your creative process as you experimented. I guess my biggest question is this: at what point do you make the decision? When do you say, “there it is… that’s the horizon I want.” And then move on to the grass or the ships or the birds, or whatever. I feel like that’s the judgment call of someone who is absolutely confident in their decision making abilities. And that’s what I truly hope to learn. Thanks again!

Wow, thanks Michael! I'm glad you liked it. Actually, those decisions are usually made very early in the process while I'm just looking at a perspective grid trying to visualize things. The vantage point and "camera" angle that we choose can have a big impact on how the image feels overall so these early decisions really lay the foundation for the whole painting.

I really love the sense of overall lighting here I mean it has more of a natural or so as to say a surrealistic wibe... and the color scheme is way too natural looking just like in real world ... I'm learning a lot from you HARDY! 🙏🏻❤ I still struggle with bringing perspective in blockout/ silhouette stage .... I still lag putting depth and mood in my greyscale silhouettes ... soon I'll upload some of my work in our academy qna😇

I’m not sure if you’ll see this,I am totally addicted to your channel at the moment. But I’m just curious about the perspective grid you’re using in the beginning of the piece, have you made it yourself or how do you get one of those? Keep it up!
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus Жыл бұрын
So glad you're enjoying the channel! I made that perspective grid myself. The vanishing point axis was just make a bunch of straight lines converging on one point. If you disable size jitter and hold down shift you can make straight lines with the brush tool. You can also do this easily with the symmetry tool set to radial. The others were just arrays of straight lines that I distorted a bit to pinch to one side or the top. I hope that's helpful!

Question: In a production setting, would environmental art come after concept art? - I think it should but I am guessing as I am yet to land my first gig 😁
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 6 ай бұрын
Great question and I think that definitions of concept art can be blurred. This painting is more of a full production painting or a key shot which I still technically consider concept art. BUT in a production setting, I would do several very rough sketches or tonal passes (sort of like you see early in this painting) just to get the idea nailed down and then if my art director likes a particular rough concept, I'll carry that forward to a more finished painting like this. It's usually a very iterative process (so be sure to bill hourly :) Good luck getting that first gig!

Hi im just wondering what the reason for flipping the image is for, i notice a few people doing it? Thanks
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 4 ай бұрын
That can be really useful for a few reasons. The main one is that it makes the image feel new again. It's like you're seeing it with fresh eyes. It helps you not feel stuck and it can make mistakes or strangeness really pop out so that you can fix it. It's great when something feels not quite right (but you're not sure why). When you flip the canvas, those things are suddenly very apparent. It also can make things easier on your wrist. There are certain diagonal marks that are really hard for your wrist to do, but if you flip the canvas, they become much easier. I actually made a custom keyboard shortcut just for this which I highly recommend.

I haven't stopped but I'm trying to work on other techniques to be a bit looser and more expressive. Custom shapes are incredibly powerful though, I'll definitely continue to use them

Heyhardy, Where did you get your perspective grid?
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 11 ай бұрын
Hey! I made this one myself with a few layers. I turn off shape dynamics and hold down shift to click out the vanishing point axis. The others are just arrays of straight, parallel lines that I distort as a group
