bassethound1 The ice dancing field in the US was SO wide open in 1978, and I think winning here would have made such a difference to Fox/Dalley’s overall career trajectories and I, too, feel that they outskated Smith/Summers, at least in FD. With the retirement of the top two couples, it seems that Smith/Summers got identified at this competition as THE predominant US couple going into Lake Placid, winning 3 US titles in a row, although they weren’t ever really noticeably better than Fox/Dalley or, later in 1980, Blumberg/Seibert, at all. By the time Smith/Summers retired, several young couples had already emerged, unfortunately for Fox/Dalley... I would have LOVED to have seen them take at least one national title.

Fox and Dalley were one of my favorites from back then and I believe they even placed 5th at the world championships
