5 жыл бұрын

Fox Knives Italy recently released the Bushman knife, FX-609 OD. This is a medium sized drop point heavy duty camp knife made with Bohler's K110 or D2 tool steel. The D2 blade of the Bushman has been teflon coated to help against corrosion, as D2 is not a stainless steel by definition. The blade features a narrow profile towards the edge to help with cutting power. The micarta handle is the proven design seen on several FKMD models such as the: Trapper, Combat Jungle and the Grand Trapper (now discontinued/limited edition model)- see my other extensive reviews here on BushCampingTools.
The Fox Bushman FX-609OD will suit those who like D2 over a purely stainless knife, where the robust wear resistance of D2 is well proven in the cutlery field of outdoor knives subjected to harsh cutting tasks.
The Fox Bushman FX-609 OD features a good penetrating point for gutting. The point geometry is thick however, not too thick as to be useless for fine tasks. This is one seriously sturdy knife. I know from experience the coating type will take a huge beating before it starts to show signs of wear and in this case that is great as it will really help to protect the D2 against corrosion should the knife be used in wet environments often.
The Fox Bushman FX-609 OD knife came deadly sharp and stayed sharp throughout my tests, one can beat it with a baton if one chooses to and the spine is acute enough to easily strike a fire steel. The Fox Bushman FX-609 OD came with a well made full grain leather scabbard capable of either horizontal of vertical carry and left or right handed carry. The leather scabbard adds a kind of traditional look to a knife which could be seen as either "tactical" or largish camp knife" in appearance, had it been furnished with a kydex scabbard or a nylon type scabbard.

Hi, i watched this a couple of years ago and really like the shape of this knife! I was a bit scared about the d2 steel used but I read a lot of good things about the k110 and that it is supposed to be a bit finer grained version of d2. And fox uses good heat treatment. Wached this video a couple of times again and finally made the decision and bought the knife. And I'm really happy with it. Thanks! It really helped these kind of reviews before buying and make a decision. And really cool you review a lot of European made knives and not only the American designs (nothing against it either). Keep up the good works! 👍

I like the design and the sheath. It would be cool to see them transfer it over to N690. I like Bushcraft knives, and we need a few more that can handle bad weather and less worry of maintaining it right away. And I’ve found N690 is pretty easy to touch up out in the field.

Yes I have long since become a fan of N690 and for me too i find it easy enough to sharpen to a very sharp functional edge.

One of my desired knives. There are similar blades out there but the sheath and handle are amazing on this. The only thing really holding me back is the weight .. they've made it heavy to compensate for the grind which isn't a chopping grind (?)
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, the knife at a quick glance looks like it had a Scandi edge applied but it hasn't. They just polished the region near the bevel and the bevel is a straight angled bevel, not a convex grind and certainly not a scandi grind. It is a heavy knife and you can chop with it but it's short too. If you like their knives and want a model better suited to chopping but of a somewhat irregular shape i'd go for the parus, a kind of mini hatchet if you like.

I don‘t really know what I should think about this knife. It seems to be a little bit like „falling out of time“. The K110 needs a perfect heat treatment and - to be honest - it is not really as reliable as the „traditional“ N690co ... It‘s well made, sure, but it comes from Fox and they know how to design and produce good knives. But it is (for me) a knife no one needs. We do have all different kinds of designs already - it would had been better to combine this design with a better handle and to give the blade a more useful design. But - hey, maybe this will be the next top model everyone wants. Who knows ... Thanks for the review.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Diderich as always thanks for your comments here. Certainly I'm a devotee of the N690 as a really functional alloy in harsh environments and "lack of care" situations as far as blade maintenance is concerned. I think Fox is trying to please the crowd (and there is a considerable crowd i think) that prefers or rather is "re-hooked" upon D2. I do have to say though that I do personally like the handle but yes, who knows how this will pan out as it is a new release.
@diderichlangmannen
@diderichlangmannen 5 жыл бұрын
Bush Camping Tools Yeah - I like the handle, too. I have this on my Combat Jungle and the Trapper but I think they can make it better. When I compare it with the handle of the Viper Tank I have to say that the handle from the Viper is much better. But if they would built a handle like the Tank and combine this with the blade shape of their new model it would be the Tank! And this is something they cannot do even if they would like to. But to be honest - we all have seen some very exciting years with a lot of great new models and companies. So it is no surprise that in the moment it feels frustrating to see that there is nothing really new or great coming from the producers. Even the small companies are not able to create something new and from my point of view they do not even have to. You can find everything you want - what ever it is. And the future will be hard for a lot of companies - I‘m sure we will see that a lot if the famous brands will disappear the next years. Let‘s see what the future will bring.

@@diderichlangmannen Yes it has come to the point where there is certainly a "re inventing the wheel" situation amongst many knife makers, Although I see now at Kizlyar Supreme (they are not the only ones) they are turning to some modern approaches to traditional knife designs. What i do like to see, and many simply do not do this is to see tapering handles. After all, our human hand closes smaller towards our small finger not wider.

How good is for food preparation and for hunting? Thanks
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 3 жыл бұрын
Ok despite the thick spine, the areas behind the edge is fine for food prep. If for hunting you want it as your main skinning gutting knife then it's not what I would choose but I'd take a look at something with a light and narrower blade profile, like the Linder's I show (specific hunting knives) because while I reckon I could use it, it may become a bit too heavy skinning a medium sized game for example largish goat/sheep/deer, but yeah if your're only planning on bagging one such animal per day then ok, although i'd still recommend a smaller dedicated hunting knife. Big game, I have no idea, as I have never had the opportunity yet to hunt such large animals, eg water buffalo and bigger, maybe here it would be fine. For small game, rabbits, birds, etc, too big for sure. Hope that helps and apologies for the late reply!

Hi, You need a lot of power to cut wood. Is the knife not sharp? Whats the angle & typ of the cut? Thank You very much.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools Жыл бұрын
Hi there, not sure at what part you mean. The knife came very sharp out the box. One thing I do on this channel is not to fake any wood work. in other words I randomly pick stuff, mostly hard woods but they could also be softwoods too, wet or dry. I film it once and not just edit out the stuff that didn't work and only show the knife going through some perfect piece of timber without knots, without any dampness. I don't trial stuff beforehand that I know will work and then film it. Because in real life it never happens like this and all knives will cut will on some unknotted perfectly dry, just the right hardness timber. That's one of the reasons why i'm not cutting up chunks of kiln dried building lumber because all of that stuff will cut perfectly every time.

Do you rely on an electric sharpner for this thing? Seems the wrong type of steel for the task.... heavy for knife type too judging by retailer stats. Thanks for all your awesome work and knowledge bytheway. Essential stuff, you should have yer own TV show really.

Hi thanks for your great comments! No I'm using ceramic sharpening stones. I find the trick here with D2 at this high Rockwell is do not let it get blunt, otherwise it will take you a while to bring that edge back unless probably as you mention, one would need a belt sharpener (I don't have one as yet, don't know why LOL- no room for one LOL!)

Wow, you take risks with banging on rock! Usually you do this on wood or dirt. This knife intrigues me and I don't know what to think. The grind is really weird and the blade very high. Don't these two things make this knife difficult to use? I had a Decathlon Sika 130 knife with a grind that looks like this and I don't have a good memory.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 2 жыл бұрын
That was because on that day i was in a real hurry i would never normally do this. i had my family with me and they were getting a little impatient with too many videos and not enough attention to preparing a BBQ LOL, fair enough to them. otherwise, yeah doing this over rocks is asking for trouble.

two different angles on the edge of a big wide knife gee try and fix it on regular ceramic stones if it developed a chip
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, the shiny part is not really part of the cutting edge as you noticed and initially can appear as a sort of scandi grind but it isn't at all. I do not believe this would chip at all, FKMD/FOX have done a good job at heat treatment (I've never had one of their knives fail on me). I think you may be over worried here. Thanks for watching.

Seriously normally I look for some drift wood and there is normally tonnes of it washed ashore. i went there to do the review and basically nothing, so very cautious, and not recommended LOL!
