She is the type of judge that inspires me to continue my education to one day become an attorney. I am from Michigan myself but moved to Colorado almost five years ago and have to say she makes me very very proud to be a woman from Michigan! If we had more judges like her the justice system would be in a better state. Thank you judge Aquilina for doing what so many other judges don’t have the guts to do. You stood up for so many of us sexual assault victims who have been silenced. Thank you for being a woman who in my opinion little girls should look up to instead of the kardashians and every other celebrity who are famous for being idiots. You said you’re not very popular with people because you won’t sugar coat things and you say it like it is, well in my book you’re amazing. I wish people were less afraid of not being liked by others so they just lie and put on facades instead of being honest and real which makes people like me who aren’t game playing people stick to ourselves because we don’t have time to be lied to, misled, and screwed over by liars, users, cheaters etc etc. I’d rather be disliked for being real and true to myself than liked for being a fake piece of crap. Thank you for not changing who you are because this case had major media attention and the whole world watching, thank you for doing your job fairly and not being vindictive or pompous but well spoken, eloquent and real. You gave a fair and just sentence because you are very much right this creep does not deserve to be in the free world ever again to victimize another woman or steal a girls innocence. I hope prison is rough for him because he doesn’t deserve an easy time for the trust he broke and the pain he caused so many innocent women, I hope the faces and voices of the strong now survivors who spoke out haunt him every night when his disgusting self lays his head down, I hope the face of the poor young woman who committed suicide because of this unrepentant ignorant “doctor” who took the oath that flat out says “do NO harm” yet he caused tons of irreparable harm to so many, he robbed them of innocence, and much much more. Trust once broken is very hard to repair. You were a doctor you were supposed to heal not harm. I hope you suffer like you’ve made so many suffer. You’re garbage and you got what you deserved, have fun in prison. The other prisoners do not like scum like you. Thank you again Judge Aquilina.

@hannahmuffy6 жыл бұрын
the people applauding were survivors of his abuse and their loved ones. they were applauding because, this one time at least, justice was served. they were applauding because a judge went above and beyond to give each and every one of them a voice, an opportunity to share their story and be believed and valued, and individual encouragement and affirmation. they were applauding because they reported his unthinkable behavior multiple times and were previously silenced. they were applauding because, finally, all of Nassar’s connections, prestige, manipulation, and so-called expertise failed to insulate him from consequences of his actions. if you come away from this video and this trial as a whole with the hot take that the survivors’ applause is uncouth, i would invite you to consider the fact that you have wildly missed the fucking point.

They were all powerful testimonies, but I found a few that stood out. Ashley Yost revealed that she had anxiety to the point where she had to sleep in her parents' bedroom. She literally banged her head to try to get the horrible thoughts out because the memories were so painful. Mattie discussed the culture of abuse outside of Larry Nassar which allowed him to operate. The mother of the Gymnast that got into drugs and killed herself because she couldn't handle the pain. What they had was a manipulative grooming system of good cop bad cop. If the coaches were mean, Larry would be nice. If the coaches wouldn't feed them, Larry would give them treats and gifts. If the girls badmouthed the coaches Larry would join in and badmouth them too, all the while those same coaches were indirectly helping him earn their trust. Why would you speak out against someone who nice compassionate, listen to your problems, and the only one who would give you food? And how could you not trust the most world respected renowned doctor? They needed him. They endured not just physical and sexual abuse, but psychological abuse as well. That's why it was so devastating. I agree with the judge. there needs to be an investigation into the overall system. In my view, parents need to be there to personally oversee what is going on, so that coaches will be placed in check. There also needs to be a parent in that doctor's office watching the procedure. It's obvious the system won't police its own, so it needs oversight. Having said that, I'm also appreciative of the Judge's comments against retaliation against Nassar's attorneys. Every accused needs a lawyer because of the 6th amendment, so if they weren't defending Larry, someone else would. If Larry didn't have an attorney, those victims couldn't get justice because the case would be thrown out on constitutional grounds. So what the would-be vigilantes need to realize is in their own way, Larry's lawyers are helping the victims get justice as much as the Prosecution. Now if his lawyers use dirty and underhanded tactics to win, that is another matter......
@makenziesmith54663 жыл бұрын
He truly thinks he is the victim. Classic DARVO. From Wikipedia: DARVO is an acronym for "deny, attack, and reverse victim and offender". It is a common manipulation strategy of psychological abusers.The abuser denies the abuse ever took place, attacks the victim for attempting to hold the abuser accountable, and claims that they, the abuser, are actually the victim in the situation, thus reversing the reality of the victim and offender. This usually involves not just "playing the victim" but also victim blaming. He is a psychological abuser, as psychological abuse could, and did, lead to sexual abuse.

The sad thing is, he probably was a good doctor, and his treatments did work, with respect to ankles, tendons, etc. which is why the parents kept bringing the children back. Unfortunately, the price tag on the treatment was being a sex toy, and being penetrated (at a minimum) and fondled whenever he chose. So the price to keep their bodies competitive, and to keep participating in the sport they had given their lives to, was basically being an unpaid child sex worker. Not really much different to me than children in Hollywood. Their parents allow agents, producers, other actors unrestricted access to their children as sex toys so they can have those movie roles. it's basically no different, and it's tragic because for the whole set of young people affected, it sends the message that in order to achieve your goals and get to the top, you have to sacrifice any say over your body, who touches it, and what sex acts you're willing to engage in. it's horrifying. It would've been better if he had not been as skilled a doctor as he was, because then the Olympic Committee, MSU and others would've gotten rid of him as soon as the complaints became more annoying than his skill made him valuable; but because of his value to these organizations, and the money he was generating, he basically was allowed his own harem of underage sex workers.

I'll disagree that the judge saying she isn't special or a hero.. She is all of the above! If every sexual predator had to face her lime this the impact would be far deeper than they are . our legal system takes these men and women and throws away that key but having them face their very victim as this Provo did is well deserved and should be part of their sentence. They should see their past victims as the strong souls they've become, no longer his victim. These young ladies took back their control and took it from him. He's pathetic and I loved every second of seeing her tell him exactly what a piece of trash he is. Too bad the legal l system doesn't allow the victims father's to deal out their punishment. I just hope he gets exactly what he deserves in prison and that isn't getting protection in prison. Leave him to general pop and THAT is where his true sentence will be carried out.

Easy to be a hero against a monster. However when real contention, and real complexity arises, most judges protect the system over blind justice. I'm living it. You aren't wrong, I'm just providing another perspective.

Henry de Bracton defined Justice as the unfailing will to give each his right. Judge Aquilina held fast to uphold the rights of all the girls affected by this man proving beyond any doubt that she is a real woman of Justice. God in his infinite mercy has seen fit in this case to lay bare before Larry Nassar all of the pain and suffering he has caused before his due time on judgement day; giving him one last chance to dwell on the vastness of the evil that was perpetrated at his own hands. Not everyone who is a criminal of this magnitude gets this same opportunity. If this man passes up this one last chance at repentance then all that awaits past the 4 walls of a prison cell for Larry Nassar is eternal suffering. The bravery of all of the girls and the eloquence with which they spoke in this case was astounding and my heart goes out to all of them who suffered so badly.

This is brutal. Obviously he deserves it, and I would never take this case, however I do feel for the attorneys who have to stand there by him. I know people criticize these attorneys and how they could defend such slime, but people in the justice system believe in the system that says everyone has the right fair trial and representation. I couldn't do it but I understand why there are those who do.

Without defense attorneys you can’t convict these people. They are necessary.

This is so late. But they were offered this case knowing it was going to big deal and they were going to be siding with one of the biggest predators on the planet, and they took it. I'm not sure why or if it was attention they sought after because you usually take on a case this big if you're going to win because if you lose it just ruins your reputation (more than it is already). I'm not sure who but one of the attorneys harshly interrogated one of the victims (she read it in her impact statement) and while READING her VICTIM impact statement, the female attorney with him made an objection. She was also seen smiling and laughing with Nassar. I don't really feel bad for them. I've been in the true crime space for awhile and while I get it, some attorneys just suck.

Judge Aquilina you are an inspirational woman to me and to others. I hope that one day I come across in meeting and said that by not standing in front of you as a defendant. I have always wanted to become a judge. If by chance you read this comment can you elaborate on what I would have to do to embark on becoming a judge or at least moving forward in the direction of pursuing a career in that field.
@croach21942 жыл бұрын
I would be her friend. Not because she is not allowing the defendant to demean her. But because she does speak out. The recent behaviour of disliking people who disagree with you is abhorrent. Dr. Nasser assaulted 125 girls at least and he is concerned about porn? His apology is not worth anything.

What an amazing person
@Koldeman2 жыл бұрын
What's amazing about this is Judge Aquilina is dealing with a true narcissist. She's been doing this long enough to know that yelling, arguing, & getting emotional is not going to sway Nassar from accepting any wrongdoing, despite clinging to his guilty plea. She effectively lets him know exactly what she thinks & what she believes he deserves within the confines of the American Judicial System. She gives a brilliant response. Dr. Nassar is among many other things, a bully. Bullies cower & cannot handle when being confronted (which explains why he doesn't challenge her with changing his guilty plea). Judge Aquilina never talks down to him & never responds with anything disrespectful...but she certainly gives him exactly what's coming to him.
