A Dallas dentist, disciplined by the state after the death of his patient, is now being sued by the patient's children. The lawsuit contends that the dentist should have never performed the oral surgery on the 82-year-old woman.

Dentist here. This is truly heartbreaking. I’ve learned patients will push for what they want and become upset when you’re obtaining clearance from a physician on managing health issues. If you find a dentist to be annoying because they want clearance or for you to manage your blood pressure, thank them.

She should've also stayed in Dallas until the all clear was given for her to fly. If it comes out in court that she pushed him to do that, or withheld any info, it might hurt their case. However if he went ahead and gave her those teeth in a rushed manner, with the knowledge she had failed kidneys and had sickle cell anemia, he'll never practice again. Not saying she couldn't, but if anything was off, and no other doctors knew her plans, then a lawsuit might get complicated.

I work for a dentist and every patient has to fill out an extensive health history. We get medical clearance 100% of the time. Sometimes it can be very frustrating making sure everything is addressed, but it’s absolutely necessary. Many times we turn people away if the dr’s aren’t comfortable with moving forward. We’ve had patients get so upset because we can’t give them what they want. It’s all about the patients safety.

I can't help but wonder if they (her family) put as much energy into looking at the risks for their mother to get this major surgery as they are with carrying out a lawsuit and talking to the media. If anything, this could be an opportunity to inform others about the risks and complications their loved ones could face if they have a lot of health issues and/ or are up there in age when wanting to undergo a surgery such as this one. I see so many people seemingly caring more for/ about their loved ones in death than they actively did while they were living. I realize it's difficult to lose someone you love, and depending on the situation, certain ppl want to point fingers and blame others for their death. It makes me wonder if they're mad at themselves for not doing more to try to stop her from going through with the surgery... This woman was obviously old enough to make up her own mind and may not have listened to her loved ones. She looked fabulous, and I can see her being as independent as possible (I'm still shocked she could even consider doing this while going through dialysis!) In my non-professional opinion I think she should've known the risks. I'm not saying the dentist doesn't have anything to be accountable for, either. In my mind, the fault falls on both sides.
