Swapping pedal assemblies in project EgoBruise!
Ealry manual to late manual since the '79 had a quadrant-less clutch pedal. This applies also to guys wanting to swap automatic to manual, or vice versa!
In this video, we restore an 87+ T5 clutch pedal assembly, pull out the 1979 RUG 4 speed assembly and install the rebuilt unit.

Hey Mike, the Maximum Motorsport instructions for that quadrant recommend three or four washers between the pedal mount and the quadrant (approximately the thickness of the spring that is removed). This helps align the quadrant with the cable coming through the firewall and WHEN I FAILED to do it, the quadrant got hung up on the pedal bracket when the clutch was fully depressed. Installing the washers may need you to clearance that brace a skosh more. Great project, love the channel

I was waiting on a comment for this! So hard to get EVERY detail in these videos without them being 40+ minutes long. I wondered that, so printed off MM's instructions and also added the correct washers to space it out. You are 100% correct. Good eye man!

Mine actually has the aluminum quadrant and the adjustable clutch cable. I searched for the install instructions so I can get the washers back correct. Where did you guys find those?

@@Nine_Finger_Wrenching hey nine finger, my quadrant actually came with a stack of washers and a set of instructions. It’s been a while but there is no real measurement needed. If your plastic rod bushings are in good shape, Just add washers on the rod between the clutch pedal arm and the pedal hanger. You should just be able to get the clip or cotter pin on the rod on the right side, I can’t remember which it is now. Basically you are spacing the clutch pedal arm to the left or it could bind on the pedal hanger bracket

I had to swap the cluster in my son’s 80 Capri for the same reason. Also removed a cluster that looked like new for a rusty POS and painted it. Also had to bend the support and pulled the quadrant. lol

I have a 91 and is a auto and i drive it almost daily,back in 03 i did this cause i was gonna end up swapping a manual tranny but then i had a motorcycle accident and almost lost my left foot so clutching is out but i left them that way however i removed the clutch pedal since it was just flopping around, i remember it was a pain in the ass putting that assembly in,lol,its always bothered the hell out of me how Ford left all the dash surfaces underneath bare and everyone of them is rusted. The parts ive been able to take out i have sandblasted and painted but sometime in the future i'm gonna put a new dash in, that new dash skeleton will be disassembled and painted without a doubt,a funny thing happened to me lately,Ive been around these cars for quite some time and i just realized the accelerator pedal is different between autos and standards,why is that? pedal proximity?

By any chance do u know if u can use a clutch pedal as a brake pedal. I would like to eliminate the og brake pedal and use the clutch as brake to create space between the gas and brake pedal.
@HOUSEOFDULA

Never heard of anyone doing anything like this, anthing can be done though, I think it would be simpler to use the stock brake setup and either widen the pad or extend the brake pedal over a little bit

So id be able to add clutch pedal rod on manual 2.3 to an auto 2.3 pedal assembly? Looking to put manual swap in the (current auto 2.3) because it is a much cleaner/finished car
@HOUSEOFDULA
@HOUSEOFDULA Жыл бұрын
For a fox platform? You CAN add a clutch pedal to the auto and just cut down the larger brake pedal. These parts swap.

Yes, a 93 foxbody coupe. I just dont want to swap whole pedal clutch assembly, after seeing you may be able to just install the clutch pedal/rod straight to the auto pedal assembly. Thought id give it a try

I'm going from manual non servo brakes to a auto with servo brakes in my 78 Mercury zephyr. Think it would be best to just swap out the pedal rods rather than the whole assembly? I've brought a auto pedal assembly so could just take the rod out of that and use that with the cobra servo
@HOUSEOFDULA
@HOUSEOFDULA 9 ай бұрын
Man for a zephyr, your in the same boat as me with these early fox bodies. Neat car BTW! I would personally take the time to move the pedal assembly. Since your also swapping from manual to auto right? This way it all matches. Another thing to look at is where on the pedal the rod attaches to, higher up the arm, lower down etc.. The placement for manual usually is a little higher up for the extra leverage for manual brakes....more leverage / less travel, all this is matched to the assist, and MC bore size. I just re-read. You say swap rods? Im not sure what rod you mean, I was thinking master cylinder rod...sorry, if you mean just swap the arms, I think you'll find it easer with it out of the car anyway so you mind as well just swap the assembly.

@@HOUSEOFDULA thanks mate appreciate the time. Yes with the rod ment the rod that goes through the pedal assembly holding the clutch pedal. Seen a few with the big servo and not sure if it's a bit big for my liking with the look of the minimal engine bay. My other thoughts is to maybe keep manual brakes and then just get another master cylinder with the right bore size for having disc disc set up. That way I could leave the pedal as it is remove the clutch pedal and do something like weld a thick plate shaped same as a auto pedal to the manual pedal for 2 foot braking 😂
@HOUSEOFDULA
@HOUSEOFDULA 9 ай бұрын
@@blownpoppm With a disc disc manual you could easily need to use both feet! I too dont care for the look, but I think its easy to get over the look and know you have solid brakes. If you stay manual, go disc front, drum rear. You'll need a proper proportioning valve and or residual valve to hold pressure on the rear for drums and the right MC. I have manual disc/drum setup on my Torino and actually think it brakes pretty well, just takes a bit of pressure for the foot.

anyone ever run into the issue of pressing in the clutch pedal but wont retract after you let off ? either gets stuck pressed in or gets loose , have aftermarket steeda quardrant and pedal assembly is all put to together just like in the vid .

Its binding somewhere bud. I'd start at the trans fork and work my way up. Is the fork binding? Throw out bearing binding? Then check the cable itself. disconnect from fork and make sure it more freely and smooth from the pedal / quadrant. If its still binding check the pedal assembly itself and make sure its not running or binding to any of the dash structure.

@@HOUSEOFDULA yep disconnected clutch cable from fork and the pedal moves the clutch quadrant back and forth , i thought the nut that tightens the clutch pedal could be the issue as well ? It seems to come loose even with loc tight , I don’t want to over tighten and strip it lol
@HOUSEOFDULA
@HOUSEOFDULA Жыл бұрын
@@tsumetaikira6797 Yeah and if you over tighten it, it can crush the plastic sleeve bushing the pedal rod rides on. But if you removed the cable from the fork, and all is smooth, then might be the clutch and or throwout bearing sticking

What parking brake cable did you use when you swap the rear end on your 86 gt
@HOUSEOFDULA
@HOUSEOFDULA 2 жыл бұрын
Right now? None. It needs one. I have an odd rear brake setup, that clocked the calipers to like the 8 oclock position, so the stock cable didnt work. I extended the brake cable to lever "rod" to make up for the diffference, but now the "rod" scraped against the driveshaft lol. Never went back for a solution and just removed it. Good think its mostly flat here, I keep in gear when parked.

Why swap pedals at all? The adjustable quadrant was junk. The only reason for the fancy aftermarket aluminum one is to replace the oem plastic piece. The early pedal assembly was superior, imo. You can even add a firewall adjuster to find tune it without getting under the car. I have three 79's and two 82's. All but one have t5's and I'm using the early pedal assembly. The cable is different where it attaches to the pedal, but they're still available. Pioneer brand and a couple others, but they all seem identical. Quality seems good.
