How to work a Canal Staircase Lock as we visit Chester by Narrowboat. Ep. 160.

3 жыл бұрынWe visit Chester on the Shropshire Union Canal by narrowboat and explain how to work a canal staircase lock. We need to climb out of the city using the Northgate Locks, a three-rise staircase lock raising us over 32 feet from Telford's Warehouse at Tower Wharf to the city centre.
Colin uncovers the story of the collapsing water tower, the lock-keeper's cottage with an unusual sewerage system, and a rare lengthsman's hovel by the cricket pitch.
For viewers expecting a tour of the National Waterways Museum...

We rented a narrowboat at Gayton, and when we reached Buckby Locks, there were the AMAZING lock keepers who looked at us and said "well, could we help you today" and they were beyond marvelous. They explained everything the video the rental company gave us and showed us what really to do. We sent a donation to the C&RT in their honor.

I love Colin's Chronicle Corner! Great stories about the history, geography, culture and people along the canals. I'm really into the architecture and engineering of the Industrial Revolution period. Especially when they come together in a canal. Just looking through a camera or watching a video it's hard sometimes to know what I'm looking at. Then comes Colin's Chronicles to make it that much more interesting. Chester looks lovely and those stories were good ones! Water towers, locks, warehouses, Roman walls, motes, King Charles Tower, guard house, cottages, sluices, sewage, and swimming pools!

Love the little bits of trivia with each video. Never ceases to amaze what people could build with their bare hands prior to the advent of TV and the internet. Another great Vlog, guys. I want to give a shout-out from the US to Chris!!! You're a good guy for what you're doing and I see even have your personal customized "wrench" for managing the gates. Colin, at one point it looked like a guy running along with a camera and tripod maybe??? Was that you? Anyway, keep up what you're doing and I really enjoy you showcasing folks along the way and the businesses and points of interest, too. Oh, I listened to your Podcast while walking this morning. It was really interesting (#3) and I'll be listening to more.
