What yall SHOULD be doing is encouraging her to unpack whatever internalized racism she’s experienced from the pervasive nature of colonialist ideology and reminding her that she should be proud of her Filipino heritage. Instead, yall do what you do best on social media, which is to act catty, nasty and desperately attempt to oust people from community’s they’re inherently apart of . Good luck w representation in the US and prideful Filipino Americans if you’re behaving that way..

@@GritToGreat__1 There was NO country until the Spaniards came. It is Spain that created and built the Philippines. That's a fact. To exist as a country, you need 3 basic components such as sovereignty and map; government and Constitution; and settled population and citizenship. Spain contributed all 3 components and gave birth to the Philippines. Those are facts. References? SPAIN IS THE MOTHERLAND. VIVA PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭 🇪🇸 1565-1898 IMPERIO HISPANO Philippines was a part of Spanish Empire for 333 years CITIZENSHIP All Filipinos were Spanish citizens during the Spanish regime. LANGUAGE Spanish was the sole official language in the Philippines for 333 years. Many Filipinos were very fluent in Spanish including notable Filipinos like Emilio Aguinaldo and Jose Rizal who cannot speak Tagalog comfortably. SOVEREIGNTY Spain issued the first and official Philippine map. (Murillo Velarde Map of 1734) GOVERNMENT Spain established the offical Philippine constitution and yes it was written in Spanish. (Constitucion Politica de 1899). The Spanish established a centralized colonial government in the Philippines from 1565-1898. The political structure consisted of a national government ruled by a Governor General appointed by the King of Spain! PHILIPPINE ANTHEM Officially written and sang in Spanish, Tagalog and (later) English EDUCATION Spain established the first university in the Philippines: Colegio de Nuestra Senora de Santisimo Rosario (aka Univeristy of Santo Tomas)

1:18 “A lot of us [Filipinos] can speak Spanish” This is patently false. Even at the peak of Spanish colonialism, only the elites (less than 5%) spoke fluent Spanish. Lots of Spanish words were assimilated into Philippine languages, that much is true. And we even have a bastardized version of Spanish (chavacano). But today, less than 1% of Filipinos are hispanohablante.
@juliomandiaga9612
@juliomandiaga9612 9 күн бұрын
I agree. Rizal wrote that in his El Filibusterismo: "What are you going to do with Castillan, the few of you who will speak it"--Jose Rizal, El Filibuterismo. When the Americans came, the Americans excluded the native speakers from those who were qualified to vote. But those who spoke Spanish or English were qualified voters, This I know because I read THE FILIPINO PEOPLE ASK JUSTICE SPEECH OF HON. MANUEL L. QUEZON OF THE PHILIPPINES IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES -FEBRUARY 13 1913. According to Quezon there was a problem with it. By not giving the native speakers the right to vote, only 15% would be able to vote "The gentleman from Pennsylvania cited in the following language the qualifications required by law to be an elector in the Philippines Anybody may vote who was an officeholder under the Spanish regime or who is able to speak or write either English or Spanish or who possesses property to the value of $250 gold or who pays taxes to the amount of $15 per annum The gentleman considers these requirements very simple I beg to take issue with the gentleman from Pennsylvania in his proposition that these requirements are simple if by this he means that in civilized countries the majority of the people at least should have these qualifications Were they to be applied in the United States there would be an enormous reduction in the electorate The population shall have in their hands the sole guidance of the ship of state If it is not Americanism to permit 15 per cent of the Filipinos to govern their countrymen what is it to permit five Americans to govern the whole population"---Manuel L Quezon

These were written by the Spaniards in the Philippines during the Spanish period: CUESTIONES FILIPINAS MEMORIA POR EL TENIENTE GENERAL DON FRANCISCO BORRERO Published1896. The Spanish mestizos represent an insignificant number among the diversity of races and mixtures that populate the Archipelago, which can be summarized as Europeans, Tagalog Indians, Pampangos, Ilocanos, Cagayans. Visayas, Chinese, Moro-Malays, Igorots, Etas La libertad de comercio en las islas Filipinas,
por Don Manuel Azcárraga y Palmero. Madrid, Impr. de J. Noguera, 1871 Given that America (Spanish America) was closer and the climate condition in America was better, the land immense and fertile, no matter how large and active the Spanish nation had been, it was not possible there would have been vigor left to serve the remote provinces of Asia, and today we are seeing emigrations from the Cantabrian coast to Buenos Aires and other places where the conditions are known to the European farmers, and where nowhere else can a wider field be presented to the entrepreneurial geniuses.

Only less than 2% of Filipinos have Spanish DNA, colonial mentality is why people keep claiming that most of us have Spanish genes when even Chinese is much more present in the Filipino population's DNA at around 20-25% of the population, maybe even more, and besides of course the Austronesian DNA. My sister did a DNA test, came out with 94% Austronesian, like 2% Chinese, Vietnamese, South Asian, then 1% Celtic but no Spanish despite my dad always saying we had a full Spanish ancestor and even on my mum's side one of my auntie's could speak Spanish fluently but only because her dad was a teacher. And the lady in the video saying we were colonised by Spain which is why most of us can speak Spanish is untrue, yes there are a lot of random Spanish words scattered among the Filipino languages and dialects and some grammatical influence but it doesn't mean we can speak Spanish just like that, 95% of the country will not understand or speak Spanish if you just started speaking it to them lol, it's easier to pick up maybe but not always. Makes sense why people may think they have Spanish DNA since it was 300 years, we have Spanish surnames, Catholicism, even our country and our collective name is Spanish lol but our genetic relations have been overblown!

"Btw, the Philippines was ruled by the Spanish for over 300 years ..." and Spain was occupied by the Moors for 500 years. Ireland has been dominated by Britain for 1,000. Nonetheless, nobody ever identifies Spaniards as Moors or the Irish as Brits. Watering down or denying their Filipino identity by citing some vague "Spanish" ancestry is self-loathing. I mean, what's wrong with simply being Filipino or Asian? After all, the Philippines was primarily colonized by soldiers and colonial administrators but was never a destination for Spanish civilians or settlers. Moreover, I've yet to meet or even hear of a single Filipino who grew up in a spanish-speaking household and NO. Many don't speak Spanish(?!?). Conversely, we grew up in a spanish-speaking household and NEVER felt the need to claim Spanish ancestry. In fact, most spanish-speaking people feel no overwhelming need or desire to self-identify with Spain instead of their actual nation, culture, or identity. We leave that to others obsessed with "cleansing" somebody else's ethnicity to suit their comfort level.

*As someone of Mexican descent, I have observed some celebrities who are clearly of partial Mexican descent try and downplay it by saying the same thing she did. They'll often say "Spanish" and "Native American" (which is literally what we Mexicans are genetically anyway). The R&B singer Kehlani is suspected of having some Mexican ancestry since she looks like it and she is from California, but she claims she is mixed with black, "Spanish and Native American". Lol.* *Demi Lovato, who is from New Mexico, is guilty of doing the same thing. Only it's pretty much confirmed that her dad is Mexican American. We've seen his photos, too, plus not hard to believe at all since they are from New Mexico. She once told a Mexican interviewer who kindly asked about her roots that she wasn't Mexican, but "Spain" after taking an ancestral DNA test. 🤡 What a dumazz. 🎉🎉 Many Mexican Americans ridiculed her stupidity. Selena Gomez never denies Her Mexican heritage. She is in fact always willing to happily discuss it and that's why we love and embrace Her.* 🌹

If you are Filipino you have to be Hispanic or East asian (chinese, korean, and Japanese) in movies. It is so sad. Don't you guys notice it too? Why do we have to hide being Filipino? It is like people treat us like second class citizens.

Vanessa Minnilo (sp) nick lacheys wife is Filipina and she openly embraced it. I think this is a self created inferiority complex or insecurity. People don’t look down on it at all imo. It’s a bit strange bc I know people who are Vietnamese, Thai, Singaporean etc. and they are open and proud about it.

It's the same for Native and Indigenous representation. They are often used for Chicano, and Latinos and vice verse. I had a friend from Cambodia and she would say that the Asian and Pacific Islander Diaspora thought that Filipinos were the Mexicans and Blacks of their Diaspora. Which means they think that they are dirty and the lowest of the low. They have no value. Which I was saddened being Black and Native. I was like dang! I tell ya, colonization really screwed things up.
