This video is a selection of first person shooter games released on the pc between 1992 and 1996. This is NOT a complete list of fps games released between these years but rather a selection of the most memorable or popular ones. Please leave comments below and let me know if I have missed out any games. There are some games that I do not deem to be first person shooters e.g. Ultima Underworld and System Shock. I see these games as RPGs in the first person perspective. Also, the year 1996 is not complete. I limited the video to 20 games and will create a follow up video for 1996-1999 with another 20 games.

Duke Nukem 3D was THE FPS game that broke the "Doom clone" curse for the category (Build engine was a bit more advanced). Released between Doom and Quake on April '96. Maybe it wasn't your time, but huge, huge miss.

Actually, Doom clones curse go on, half-Life actually killed the curse and newblood resurrected it
@guysplace5385
@guysplace5385 2 жыл бұрын
@@jordanfreman4954 No, Duke was the first for sure. No one looked at it and thought 'Doom clone', it was powerful on its own. Since Half Life is 3D and Quake and Quake 2 were already around, it's not the same thing. Oh, and yeah,the curse ended. No games 'felt' like half-assed Doom games, and FPS became a category on its own.

I remember the first time I saw Doom running on a PC in an electronics store. I stood there for a good 30 minutes and just stared at the monitor. I couldn't believe what I saw because I only had an 8088 PC at home at this time. I remember thinking: This looks like a movie.

Back in a time where you could carry up to 30 weapons, usable items, jump, medkits, large colorful landscapes, fast and frantic gameplay, hidden secrets and play via LAN parties and couch coop with a buddy. Now it's brown n bloom, street grey, regenable health, checkpoints every 30 seconds, auto saving and only being able to carry two weapons. Sad how much times have changed.

Gamma brightness in the video option menue was extremely important for the doom franchise. Having this option turned too high will dramatically affect the game graphics detail. Playing in a dark room with brightness and gamma turned downed in the game; will bring out the best graphic detail. In this video the brightness was turned up way to high giving it a cartoon feel instead of a realistic feel.

Rise of the Triad was a very good first person shooter. So was Duke Nukem. Warcraft II and Command & Conquer were amazing. Doom 2 of course. I think I played those 5 games more than any others in the 1990s. Loads of fun. Heretic, Hexen, Quake. Played those too. The old games were the best.

My favourite fps from that era were bungie games. I only had a mac as a kid. The marathon series was the best, precursor to halo for sure. But the first fps I fell in love with was pathways into darkness also by bungie.

@@TheGroundedAviator I feel like the older cod games were far more complex and skillful in their design. Black ops zombies might as well be its own separate game. Its definitely pretty tough and challenging as simple as the mode may be in concept.

I'm surprised to not see System shock on here! Came out right after DOOM . Could actually look around, jump, and crouch. You even had to hack doors and terminals to get to certain places. The cyberspace sections are weird but fun.
