The Fractal Design Torrent is available in a few different colours with and without RGB and tempered glass. I bought the white one because it's awesome. Sadly that means no RGB, but it does still have some great highlights:
- Excellent cooling with included fans - 2 x 180mm and 3 x 140mm included as standard
- Easy connectivity with an included PWM controller
- Tall feet so it's well off the desk/floor for excellent intake
- Easy to remove panels and dust filters

This case is essentially only for full liquid cooling systems or Air tower coolers. You can mount upto a 420mm rad at the bottom or front, but the front is really the only option for an AIO and that's not ideal in my humble opinion. Find out why here • STOP DOING THIS!!!!!!!

UPDATE: I used your recommendations to add an exhaust fan. I added a Noctua 140mm and ran it to the PWM OPT_CPU header on the motherboard. I then used a Y connector to run the dual Noctua CPU fans to the single CPU_FAN header. The result was a 3 fan CPU solution that works exceptionally well for this setup. I feel that the recommended PWM fan header setup is completely unnecessary as it left all the fans running in synch with the CPU. I think that in your video you also chose to run CPU fan control to the board and use the PWM array as a generic system header. I think this was the way to go.

So to summarize: - dual noctua cpu fans to CPU_FAN - standalone back fan to OPT_CPU - PWM array to one of the SYS_FAN headers How has this worked for you? Hopefully I got it right :)

@@BGraves At the very least it prevents the hot CPU air from going directly up to the PSU and vice versa, since the front fans shouldnt be running super fast anyways. And Im pretty sure it also affects the back part of the GPU since its hot air is being blown up from below, inbetween itself and the CPU cooler. Hot air loves to go up, cold air down. Ive seen different fan set ups like this, with and without an exhaust fan and it has an effect on the temperature. Its not mindblowing tho, but its not nothing either :)

Since there is already a lot of positive pressure on this case, and all that air is already being pushed to the back by those massive fans in the front and also the ones in the bottom, I doubt that the fan installed on the back will do much difference but great video. Thanks!

Thank you for this video. I'll be doing a build with this case next week. It's been many years since I've done a build. I used to enjoy it, but not anymore. In fact, the last time, I paid a PC shop to do it for me because I couldn't be bothered. Things have changed and I'm very rusty, so this video gave me the confidence I need to get on with it. It's funny hearing your criticisms about cable management. Back in the day, the entire space of my tower was filled with cables. Nowadays, with a case like the Torrent, cable management is pretty much forced upon you. You couldn't have a mess inside your tower unless you went out of your way to do it.

Good video, Half way building in this case(Black RGB light tint version) just waiting for Noctua NH-U12A Chromax black to show up next week. Thanks for pointing out those 2x8 pin cpu cables, I'll install those now before putting the tower cooler in, Even though I have built pc's for 20+ years I still forget basic things. The only fault I give this case and most others on the market is they never give enough cable management space. All this airflow space inside case but they couldn't give us an extra inch on the other side, It's frustrating that they all keep doing it year after year. 50mm should become industry standard for cable management then no one would have issues.

There is a misconception that the Fractal Torrent is a case for ‘AIR cooling”. It indeed excels at air cooling but it also excels at AIO cooling as well. AIO works wonderfully in the Torrent and looks awesome with the right RGB since the front of the case has a really cool unique look to it. Running a 360 AIO with the I9 12900k on a Asus ROG Maximus Extreme. With a 5.5 overclock I am getting 27c idle temps and 78c to 81c running full load during cinebench R23. The intake fans at the bottom is the true star. My FE 3090 went from 80c+ to 58.2c with this case. Loving the case! Picked up the black non RGB Torrent since I replaced two front fans with AIO RGB fans and purchased a 3 pack of Fractal RGB fans to replace the stock bottom intake fans. Enjoy your case, it is a beauty!

I really wanted the white version, but I ended getting the grey case with the light glass (both panels are glass, the cable side being dark tint glass instead of a metal panel like the white version) because at the time a few weeks ago, the white one was out of stock. It's a stunning case with an impressive presence. I really like what FD has been doing esthetically, myself upgrading from a Meshify C. I went with an H170i 420mm in push/pull and put the two 180 fans in the bottom with future plans of going with a full custom loop. Great vid!

Thanks for this review. Seeing the additional HDD and SSD space at the back answered my questions. I've got like 3 SSD's and 1 3.5 so wasn't sure it would work. This case is perfect.

Did you build one with the drives? I would want two HDDs and two SSDs, plus the NVMEs. With this case the room for cables doesn't seem sufficient.

I have to thank you for a well done, thorough video with details on the whys. I am very much wanting to do a 12900K build in the Torrent and was wanting to figure out how to do a radiator AIO on the front fans, Yes I know you can swap the fans around, but just wanted the larger airflow fans up front.. well your Video showed me I can get away with an air cooler, as I have already heard great performance still with a good UV.. So you have changed my can I figure a way to... mod it.. vs just build it very similarly to yours. Thank you for the pain savings in advance lol.

The Noctua is a beast, and honestly, really requires some planning before building, because as you found out, connecting the CPU PSU pins is difficult in that small space. I generally will connect them, then run the cables into the case and "Parachute" the motherboard down to avoid this. Really the only drawback of that cooler, IMO.

Outstanding video. Currently I have a Montech X3 Mesh budget case that has good airflow and I like it, but it's too small for the new gpu's that are as big as a mini van. I've been keeping an eye out for a top rated pc case with top notch air flow that's quiet and bigger, and today I ran across a sale at newegg for the Fractal Torrent black full size non-rgb for $110 so I jumped on it. I was digging around youtube for videos on the case and ran across this one. I would like to emphasize how helpful this video is, especially since I'm not generally the type of person who intentionally provokes prawns and I'd like to be clear about that. For anyone needing this video for the black Torrent, just download this video and play it through a media player that allows you to invert colors ;)

Instead of buying another fan I just put one in the back and only used 2 in the front face and 3 on the inside, I let the tech at Micro Center pick out my build based on me saying I wanted something to edit 4k videos and have it run flawlessly.. I said I wanted to spend 5-10k He picked out the 420 AIO & it legit doesn’t fit even though they claim it does, the front doesn’t go low enough

This video came in handy if for no other reason that explaining what that three-pin RGB connector was for. I couldn't find it in the manual and nothing I found before this video acknowledged its existence. And being bundled with the other front panel connectors lead me to assume it had to be associated with that stuff, which threw me off even more. And yeah, I fully agree that making the back cords not a mess is extremely difficult. The fact that M.2s don't need more cables running around cases is an underappreciated selling point, I now realize. Regardless though, would it kill case manufacturers to add a little more width on the back side? Those daisy chained sata power cables love to bulge in weird ways and just a little more width would make a big difference in managing them.

Very nice build, personally I wouldn't have that add in card blocking the gpu airflow, rear fan isn't needed, and would have used a nh-d15s as opposed to d15 but apart from that very nice 👍

It doesn't block airflow. There's plenty from the front and room from the bottom 140s as well. Why use a smaller cooler? Tbh I'd like to go full liquid loop with it so I might do that at some point.

I was planning to buy this case, noctua and same RAM too. I am going to put 4080 and new raport lake in it. I would prefer the model without glass side, but I cannot find one. Black version is with all metal panels, but not this white one. I would prefer white, because it matches my keyboard (G915 tkl) and it would not be as invasive as white, it is a huge case anyways.

Great video. I got the black RGB version and I like it a lot, except for the lack of room in the back for cable management. It gets even worse with the RGB cables for the 5 fans, and it is odd that all the cables are so much longer than they need to be, and not pre-wired. I also don't like that the RGB version has a glass back panel, which feels a bit dodgy to push hard against all the cables to squeeze them in there. I am not running any exhaust fan, and I think it's ok without it.

beautiful case and easy to install noctura d-15 fan. Would buy those two brands again and also Asrock again. Everything installed flawlessly. Well, except that i needed to start with 1 ram stick on my asrock board, then set frequency, and then it booted with 2 (but it booted with 2 before at least once, oddly enough :/ )

On my first build its been a week slowly starting to click in my mind but this is my 3rd time taking it apart because I ran the cables last and had to move things so i could run the cables efficiently- nbd but now doing a build where things seen to not match any of these videos is a nightmare like my HD audio header has 6 pins across And the one it comes with is only 5 - it makes me nervous .. i am hopeful for this tutorial though because i finally found one that had my motherboard and case so hopefully ill be able to see where all the cables go i dont wanna mess up and damage anything

Thanks for the guide. About to do a new build with the Torrent. From what I've read, the rear fan is either unnecessary or potentially slightly detrimental considering how much positive pressure this case has. As far as the open holes near the PSU, I'm thinking I might block the extra holes with something to encourage all the air to flow out the back, though I don't know how much difference it will make. Also, I usually install the cooler after the motherboard since there are inevitably screw holes that get blocked by the cooler. Did you just leave a couple without screws?

QUESTION... Building a Similar build literally as we speak... I cannot figure out where this cable from the Fan controller plugs in too. One plugs into a S-ATA port, I obviously assume to power the fan controller, the other that came plugged in... does that connect to my motherboard?!

Thank you for the detailed build video. Short comment: Thinking of swapping a Phanteks P600S to this Fractal Torrent but have the same concerns of clc vs NHD15 for cpu cooling. Long comment: When I ran a Noctua NHD15 with a MSI Gaming X 3090, the 3090 backplate was soo close to the NHD15 cpu cooler it added about 10 degrees to the cpu 9900k temps. Once I swapped out to an EKWB 360mm Classic Closed Loop Cooler the cpu 9900k temps dropped about 10 degrees. This was in a Phanteks P600S case which has a nice mesh top. Was using all noctua fans. I am considering swapping out the Phanteks P600S to this Fractal Torrent. I have the pc sitting below the left side of the desk on a board with wheels. I spilled a cup of reverse osmosis water (pure water) into the top of the P600S and into the top of an APC 1500VA Pure Sine Wave UPS. The water didn't make it into the P600S because of the top mounted 360mm clc radiator but it did go into the UPS. I moved as quick as possible but it didn't matter. Once the water mixed with dust it became conductive. Sparks started flying. Took it outside. Left it in the garage for a week. Then I ran a heater on low pointed at it for a few days. Plugging it back in resulted in SPARKS!! Ended up taking it apart and taking the battery out, salvaging the plug for random future projects, and threw the rest away. That was a big bummer. When we did have power outages and the UPS's kicked in, there was an awful plastic burning smell from both our APC UPS's. I would not use them in the future because of this. I was afraid they could cause a fire. When we leave the house I always make sure both PCs are off because I do not trust the APC UPS's if the power goes out while we are not home. Her PC: 9900k - 3090 - 64Gb DDR4 3600 - 1600Watt PSU - Phanteks P600S My PC: 5900X - 3090 - 128Gb DDR4 3600 - 1600Watt PSU - Phanteks P600S Reminded me NOT TO USE A CASE with an OPEN TOP sitting below wifes desktop. It was her desk and her PC I was trying to clean when my shirt sleeve caught the edge of the glass as I reached for it to move it. This Fractal Torrent has a SOLID TOP! No mesh! This would greatly reduce the risk of a repeat drink spill incident. However I am not sure if I would want to go back to the NHD15 or compromise on moving the front 180mm fans. As you mentioned in the video, you don't want the clc pump at the highest point due to air bubbles so putting the clc 360 on the bottom would be asking for premature failure. I do also have a horizontal cooler that was quite expensive but didn't live up to the hype. Maybe I will go back to that and still get this case in white. The only other major consideration is I got frustrated with her 750Watt EVGA GT power supply kicking off when starting games due to the 3090 pulling like twice it's rated power for an instant. I upgraded her to the max to avoid all future problems. Went with a 1600Watt Superflower Titanium. Unfortunately the Fractal Torrent maxes out at 230mm for PSU rear clearance. The 1600Watt Superflower Titanium lists max depth as 220mm. Not sure if that includes cable plugs or just the raw metal frame of the PSU. Think I will still order the Fractal and if need be swap PSUs around with our other pcs as needed. Thanks again for the detailed video.

I have bought the same housing. I want to run the two 180mm at 550 RPM and the lower 140mm at 900 RPM, what is the best way to set this up? If I use the FAN HUB I can not control the fans ?

Beautiful case, I was thinking of using it for my build, but I fear that the upper left part of the chassis would prevent access to the Corsair RM1000x SHIFT connectors which are located on the side.

Can you swap glass panel to the other side? I would like to get metal panel on the other side, so the glass one would be against the wall, so I wouldn't have to watch it.

Im deciding between fractal define r7, or torrent or torrent compact. I want it to be quiet while still having decent cooling. Define r7 because I know its quiet while torrent has better airflow and looks nicer aesthetically to me but it also seems kind of big which is why im also considering compact version but I also need space for PCIe slots for capture card and other accessories so not sure if compact has enough space for those If Ill use big gpu, big cooler and bottom fans. I cant decide which one to get.

Include the Lian Li Lancool II Mesh (or Lian Li Lancool III) into your considerations. Achieves better GPU temperatures than the Torrent in some reviews at the expense of a slightly higher CPU temperature. Also, it isn't as ridiculously large as the Fractal Torrent (a case size that is only needed for custom water cooling).

When you plug all fans (front and bottom) into the fan hub, then u cant set them to different speeds, am I right? I am asking cuz I would like to set the 180s to a different speed than the 140s ..

If by some chance you have a Gigabyte motherboard - it seems there’s an issue with certain Gigabyte motherboards and Noctua fans. Noctua fans randomly don’t start up. There’s no fix. My case has 6 of them all connected to separate motherboard fan headers. Between 1 and 3 of them won’t start on any given boot up. I won’t ever take a Gigabyte motherboard again.

You did not show the RGB strip by the power supply RGB connection, it has a 3 pin plug so it does not fit in a standard RGB header.

Hi, thank you for this video. I purchased the tower because you made it look so great. One question for you --- did the stand-offs already come preinstalled in the proper locations for an atx motherboard? Did you have to remove anything prior to motherboard installation?

I've been wanting this case so bad especially since I have a rtx 3090 and it turns my room into a Steam room. But the cable management space has kept me from doing so. Looks tiny, even less space that my current one which is a nightmare. I wish the top part had more space for pay cable space too since I am not interested in water cooling. Don't understand why a case with so much airflow then forces you to have unused empty space reserved just for water cooling.

@@TheProvokedPrawn So I can daisy chain the 2 180 fans together then connect them to the MB and daisy chain the 3 140 together and plug them in a second MB fan connector. I also have Torrent so I plugged each fan in the controller. Or do I plug the single controller in the MB?

It's definitely a bit of a struggle but you can make it work with some planning. The solid panel variant is more forgiving since the solid panels are able to flex more safely and easily than the glass panels, so if you've got the solid variant then it should be a bit easier for you.

I’d say No, I just build in a Torrent Compact, tons of airflow through the back. I’ve added 2 140mm fans on the bottom but turns out they made minimal difference in temps. The 2 180mm fans up front move a ton of air front to back quickly, heat from a 3090 wouldn’t have time to rise to warm up the noctua

I can see that your microphone is the SM7b. What is your phantom power audio interface that feed the proper gain to it? I use Audient ID4 (not the MKII edition) paired to a Stellar X2. I was wondering if my DAW would be enough for a SM7B or a EV RE20.

I don't know about your setup by I've used several including the GoXLR, Rodecaster Pro 2, Elgato Wave XLR and Razer audio mixer, all without any sort of gain booster (e.g. a cloud lifter)

I've not had a chance to try the Evo sadly. But in my experience Lian Li cases are superb. Excellent build quality, great cooling, wonderful aesthetics and the Evo is something else in terms of Modular design.

Jayz2Cents showed it was possible. Though I wouldn't do it tbh, because the cables are meant to go towards the front in this design, so it's illogical to make them go sideways here.

connecting all torrent's fan (140 and 180) into fanhub i can control the % rpm with a motherboard software or bios, but the real rpm of the different fans is not detected, for example with asus fanexpert. This software usually detect the rpm for each fan conected in each fan plug on the motherboard, but with fanhub, it will detect only one rpm...140 or 180 ? how can i regulate them all ?

As far as I have read from other reviews you can’t, the hub just sends the rpm from the fan connected as number one. Still waiting for PSU and the Noctua NH-D15. But after seeing how big the cooler really is I wonder why I bought RAM with RGB,. Seems like I have to go full custom loop earlier than I have planned, 360x180 Radiator for the front and whatever will fit in the bottom after that one.
