Scrap Fabric Love

Күн бұрын

This is a fun quilt block meant to stretch your most treasured bits of scrap fabric a little bit further.
Pick a scrap from a sentimental quilt that you are gifting or the last oddly shaped cut off of your Tula Pink or Kaffe Fassett scraps and frame them for posterity in this framed scraps quilt block.
This is a 'minimal measuring required' quilt block meaning although we will be measuring at some key points it is otherwise pieced using somewhat of an improv piecing method.
Written instructions on my blog here: scrapfabriclove.com/framed-sc...
Materials needed:
- any shape and size of beautiful fabric scraps
- strips of black fabric (no less than 3/4" wide)
- various sizes of white background fabric
Tools:
- any clear ruler with a 1/2" line. I used an Omnigrids ruler: amzn.to/3IGITyO
- squaring rulers for squaring your blocks at the end: amzn.to/3kyjnn2

I'm really inspired by this one! What stands out to me is that the center focus fabric can be just "normal" in colour or design, but when given a frame and some white space it becomes a piece of art. I was reminded of Mondrian as well. Thanks for posting this - I'm going to start rummaging through my scrap bins and make a few blocks on this cold and snowy day.

When you said “special fabric” & “sentimental “, I knew I’d LOVE this. I have bits & pieces of fabric that were scraps from clothes my mom sewed for me in high school. I treasure them so much because each piece has memories attached. I’m going to dig them out today. Your blocks are so awesome! You are so creative & have such great ideas, thanks you for sharing!!!

I absolutely love this idea! I have only been sewing for a short time (bought my first sewing machine in 2022) but I have a ton of scraps of some meaningful fabric that I would love to have a keepsake of. Its like I remember each fabric and what I used it for, so having a bunch of these squares made up to either complete a quilt one day, or do smaller projects with is amazing. I love your videos. Thank you so much!

I really like this idea! While I love symmetrical and "orderly" patterns - I do like a quilt that is NOT looking like it was all "precuts" and on purpose. And yes, great way to use and show off those amazing frabrics you don't really want to cut and you aren't sure how to use, but you want them in a quilt, not sitting in a box.

Thank you so much for this idea! I knew there must be a reason that I'd saved that 2 inch square of fabric for 20+ years. I had a large roll of vintage bias binding in dark brown so I spent yesterday doing frames. Today I'm working on the negative space in a mixture of blues . Let's hope I can keep momentum to finish!

Loved this. Going to have to try this one. I'm new to your channel but you and I are similar types of quilters it seems. I love scrappy, improv, string quilts and crumb pieced blocks, and sometimes a very precisely pieced pattern. I have way more fun just going with whatever makes me relax and enjoy being in my sewing room. Can't wait to see what you make with these. I like the smaller frames and both background colors are totally dynamic. Lots of energy. Great job.

What a fun watch! Great idea to use up scraps. You have so many good suggestions as how to approach your project as well, such as making a block after finishing a quilt. This could even be done with leftover knit pieces as you are framing as you go giving i some stability and each block could be then fused to a soft fusible quilt interfacing to stabilize for quilting. Soft to the touch and would make great baby blankets after sewing baby clothes. So many possibilities. So I am definitely subscribing and looking at your channel to see if you have expanded on your very cool looking blocks.

People tell me that all the time ! Maybe one day I’ll learn 😂. Might have to cut myself first!

Very cool. I never quilt, but I make potholders. Definitely on the list. Probably a set of 4 for my mother-in-law. Thank you for the great idea. I like black and white.

Your a very creative person. I love the look of these blocks but I question my patience in making them -- at least in a quilt. But if you have the patience, it would make a stunning quilt I think.

I think these might look more striking on their own - like mounted into an actual frame as wall art. Then you don’t need to make a whole quilt’s worth 😉

Yes! I love this! I have tons of leftover trimmings and scraps of beautiful, carefully selected prints that would mean a lot to me personally in a finished throw. I think I would make it double sided, rather than whole sheet backing. Maybe change the background color on the backside.

I love this idea. Make QOV and lots of charity quilts. This would be another way to use all my strips.
