Your videos are a godsend at this time in my life. My wife is very ill and I just need something to watch to distract me. I have seen everything from the 2nd floor joists going in years ago. But your voice and videos just keep me from thinking about all that could go wrong. I know you later changed the roof angle, but even that roof held up. Nothing ever built to strong ever failed.

Makes sense using the rim joist, definitely stronger than a ledger board. You've made so many friends on YT that are cheering you on, folks wishing you much success.

Thank you for answering my question. A whole video was an added bonus. Glad you are using the Tico nails, their sheer strength far surpasses standard framing nails, so with the hangers and being nailed into the internal support board, this should definitely be stronger than just using a ledger. You'll likely have to clear snow off of the lower roofs, but I understand the aesthetics of the front and back roof pitches matching. You're doing an awesome job, I was just worried when I didn't see at least hangers in the previous video. (And yes, typically the hangers go up before or with the rafters). Great job, and great explaination.

Red poppy. Your doing a great job. Keep up the great work. Am a carpenter by trade. I like the way your doing things!!!!!!!!!! A little over kill,,,,,, never hurts on any thing. Being in snow country doesn't take much to have roof come down. Back here EAST COAST. In Connecticut saw 22" inch of snow in one storm winter year 10-11 plus there were snow before dropping 12-14" and then short time after another 12-16 " Yes saw a lot of roof go down. And wrecked a lot of building. Doesn't take much for roof to fall in with the right storm's take care. JUNKMANDO

Dad always said to build it "Bull Stout and Chicken Tight" so you're good. you built it pretty much the way i built my shop off the garage. i could have used 2x8 or 2x10 but i used 2x12s instead for snow load and due to a minimal roof pitch and for maybe a future deck or solar panels on top. the next winter we had 16" of wet snow sitting on it for over a week or so with no problems. you'll never regret using too much insulation or over building a structure i say.

great.. be sure that on the back door.. you have a second deadbolt or jimmy proof dead bolt installed at about 20 to 24 inches up from the floor to make it crazy hard to kick thru. there is a way to drill a shallow hole in the hinge side of the door. put a lag screw in.. cut the hex off. close the door to imprint the lag screw end on the door jam.. you can pound a piece of 1/4" galvanized water pipe and trim off the extra like you cut off the hex on the lag screw to make the door even harder to get thru.

I hope it works when you get snow piling up on the addition, I think I would have opted for a steeper pitch, seen several barns in my area over the years where they built wings that collapsed because they had a flatter pitch than the roof on the main building. You're gonna want to shovel snow off that addition during heavy snow years to keep that from happening.

I will share what happened at our two story house. Steel roof. Cantilevered deck from second floor, side of house under the dripline, built with 2x10s, some laminated (two 2x10s nailed together). Heavy snow load, which over the course of the winter accumulated a heavy base of ice. The snow load came down in one fall, and cleanly snapped off the deck, all boards were snapped off like toothpicks. It would have killed anything under the dripline, which fortunately was not a traffic area. I don't know what your snow load is, but I'd be nervous of accumulated snow coming down from the main house roof. We got about 100 inches of snow each winter, sometimes more, sometimes less. That winter there was a bit less.

M T Good point to keep in mind: impact load, especially when ice has formed, can far exceed a static snow load.

My wife & I love your videos. Gradually getting through many of them. We also watch Pure Living for Life in Utah & My Self Reliance in Northern Ontario Canada. Close to where I grew up in Toronto. But... what’s really amazing is that people from different parts of the world can have similar views on life (we hate the banks & love our dogs) With all the crap going on in your country at present, I think you are wise to go off grid. Hope MAGA works for you guys. We appear to have many things in common... despite the fact that I’ve been living in West Australia for over 40 years now. Eg. Sheep... I’m on 2.5 acres & have my Polaris & Hustler Rapter Zero Turn to help me with the my yard. Solar on the roof & lots of trees. We spend weeks in our outback doing a little detecting / prospecting to get away from the traffic & congestion which creeps ever closer. Enjoy your life & keep up the videos. Cheers Trevor & Rose

Great video - thanks for giving us all the skinny on this roof. You seemed slightly defensive - - it just seemed odd. I've never seen anyone add the hangers afterward. But I have seen people rely on toenailing, which of course is neither code or safe. Your roof now is never going ANYWHERE. I've always installed the hangers first, then slid/tapped in the rafters after - making it much easier to work by myself. I even had some 20' rafters on my porch - they were oh so much fun ;-} You are really jammin' Wonderful to see that you're going to beat the weather -- AMEN !

Lots of ways to skin a cat Heath and that's one of them. It will work just fine.In that situation I usually just put a skilsaw slice square in from the heel of that cut and slip a regular joist hanger in when I toenail the top to the line. Then I just come back and nailgun them on there later.Both ways get the job done. I prefer the way you've done it versus a ledger board for potential snow load.
@arosenberger87

Gotta love when people jump to conclusions. You did say that you were nailing the rafters to the rim joist... In my area, you can't have the plywood between the rafters and ledger board/rim joist, but it is considered acceptable to use the rim joist as you did. You clearly were not done with framing in your last video. Hope you get your inspection soon... Snows gonna start flying soon.

I was under the impression that I had to use a ledger board on the wall for the rafters, and I would have built things that way. But maybe this is not true. Maybe I can tap into the rim joist like you just did. Please, let us know if the roof passes inspection and what the Inspector says, because I am learning too.... so I'll rethink this ledger board issue. Also, you are absolutely correct about the snow loading - the way to have a stable situation is to increase the rafter sizes, and in your case, you upped the Annie to 2x12s; or increase the pitch. I forgot about your snow loading because I am here in Northern California. No doubt, a higher pitch in snow country really helps. But if you are allowed to have a low roof pitch by local code, then by all means, knock yourself out. 😉😉 May the Lord provide you with more resources, including 2x12s, to get the house finished. Great, great job!

I was thinking that you should have used cheaper prefab trusts instead of 2x12" BUT at 2,000$ for the whole lot instead of 6,000$ is a steal !! Good for you ! I am also always looking for deals, end of runs, slightly damaged materials and stock them. 2 weeks ago, I went to the local "big box" lumber yard for some screws and saw they were clearing paletsfull of 1/2" x 7/16"x 8' quarter round moldings at 1$ each (!) Usualy priced at 8$C ! Bought 60 of them. Could'nt resist. BTW, regarding those hangers, I know they are now mandatory everywhere by code. But do you know they become useless after the house is dried in ? Unless you use kilndried lumber, the wood looses it's natural humidity content, thus shrinking cross grain, (not lenghtwise) and then holding on only by the 1 1/2" nails !! You did good by toe nailing them ! Take care, Heath !
