Back in 2007 I was intrigued with the new direction that Ratchet & Clank was going. Intrigue didn't match the cost of a PlayStation 3 so I procrastinated... and kept doing so for 14 years. Time to finally play these games.

I'd hesitate to say most of them... The Lombaxes very obviously had a substantial Intersteller Empire to have the resources to fight the Cragmites for centuries. They were push from that to a collection of survivors barricaded in the Halls of Azimuth before they escaped using the Dimensionator. That means Tachyon likely killed a vast majority of their race.

@@darthsonic4135 My understanding is that they didn't have an empire as such; more that they were the leaders of a multi-species alliance against the cragmites. That said, it does seem rather implausible that most of them escaped, even in the case where Fastoon was their only settled world.

The future series is part of the original timeline, the only game in the series that is not is the "Reboot" game for the PS4 which came out with the movie. The lore is further expanded in the data logs and additional info found in the games but you have to look for it. Angel is a lombax, but by the Future series she has used the Dimensionator to escape Emperor Tachyon by going to another dimension. Which dimension you ask? Rivets! If you stand around in the prison level in Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, RIvet begins to talk about her friend Angela Cross and how they got imprisoned together, and wonders where she went.

One of my main compliments I can give to the first three Future games is that they've aged a ton better than a lot of other big games of the generation, thanks to Insomniac focusing on keeping the games running at a consistent 60fps while still making the games look great, it's also helped by the cartoonier art style rather than the photorealistic look so many other games went for that became extremely dated in a year or two. So many other 7th gen games have 30fps caps with tons of ugly motion blur, dull colors, murky textures and performance dips constantly, but the original R&CF trilogy is vibrant, full of life, and still looks and feels great to go back to today.

Unpopular opinion, but Into the Nexus is my favorite (And imo the best) from the future saga. I loved how the worlds felt more like the PS2 ones and adored how the story wasn't focused entirely on the last Lombax stuff. It feels like, as you said in the video, more of a "save the universe" story like the PS2 titles. The references to Ratchet's past and seeing how much he's grown after the whole thing with Azimuth("Wanting something too badly can change you into something you're not!) gave me lots of feelings. My only complaint is that it's too short. I really wished we got to see more about the Prog siblings

i think your problem with the numbered health system of rac3 and onwards comes more with a change in design ethos for enemies in rac1&2 enemies where mostly planet specific while from rac3 forwards some enemies got reused a lot more and the designers wanted those enemies in later areas to pose the same threat as they did before so they upped their damage. the change in the hud representation of your health had nothing to do with this change

In A Crack in Time, the only weapons that can be modified are the three Constructo weapons. They're also not direct upgrades either, they just change how the weapon functions, side-grades. Think like the weapons in TF2, where each class & slot is a specific type of weapon (like Scout using the Scattergun as a primary) which can be swapped out for a tweaked version of it, with their own pros and cons.

This mini-series of Ratchet reviews has been really interesting from a long-time fan (and someone whose favourite is also A Crack In Time) and I think to hear the opinion of someone else is really refreshing. You articulate your points in a clear manner, the structure is simple, you keep me entertained throughout your videos, and I would LOVE to hear your opinions of Rift Apart when it releases. You don't have to be "qualified" to give an opinion, as long as you present it in a clear, approachable way opposed to a pushy, my-opinion-is-correct way, and I think you do that Anyway, loved the video, and if you're burned out of RaC, then fair enough, but as someone who was introduced to your channel by your RaC Trilogy video and still sticks around to this day, I hope you do decide to review Rift Apart at the very least

Of the spinoff games, I'm going to suggest checking out All 4 One (the working title "4-Play" was also too on-the-nose I guess). It's a coop-focused game and changes up the formula a bit (all weapon upgrades are bought, for one), but I still personally found it pretty fun to play, even single-player. It's more platforming focused than some games in the series. The plot is pretty skippable, but I found it quite funny. It tends to get overlooked, and I think that's a shame. Though of course, your mileage may vary. As for the "alternate timeline" theory: I don't think Insomniac has ever rebooted the series, technically, but they ignore or paper over anything inconvenient from one game to the next, so there's this sort of rolling cascade of soft and hard retcons across the series that makes it feel like it's hopped dimensions on occasion. edit: Also thanks, you just reminded me how great ACiT was. Hopefully RA will be too.

Doesn't change the fact that the wikia was full of shipping wars. There were points where Sasha was also labled as his "girlfriend" and arguments in the talk pages between shippers. As I mentioned above though, I can't say if this is still happening now, because I only checked the wikia regularly when I was looking for information on the 2016 game and 100%ing ACiT (which I was doing at time) so maybe they calmed tf down. Little tidbit about tool of destruction’s gadgets. Even if you don’t buy one initially, you can still find gadgets in ammo boxes. I always found myself with a full amount, even though i never went to the gadget vender and would notice notice a weird thing floating around nearby every time i broke an ammo crate. Those things actually being devices. I have to wonder what the use of the vender was at that point, because ammo crates can be found anywhere, and the gadget’s compacities were very small, so it only took a couple of ammo crates to fill it up again. You’d also get some from raritanium chests, and a few more would appear than from an ammo crate, further lowering the need to go to a vender. There was also the matter of most of the gadgets having little practicality, in my case, anyways. The most i’ve used were the leech bomb and mega-leech bomb. I still used ones like the groovitron and mr zerkon, but not as much outside of certain situations. The gas grenade didn’t do much, hele-drone was too situational and broke the pace a bit, the animal morph bomb was cute, but not memorable, and the coil seekers were... honestly, next to useless. I’d talk a bit about the golden grooveitron, but i never had enough bolts to get one, plus i never really used them enough to justify getting one. That said, i do see why they brought the groovitron and mr. zerkon over to the next game, but i also see why they didn’t implement gadgets into it, as well.

A Crack in Time's ending cutscene was pretty big. Maybe not too "important", since you already know that both Ratchet and Clank of course appear in later games, but it's a nice and well-written conclusion to the game's story. I'd suggest at least looking up a video of it if you have the time.

I feel the Future Saga while different wasn't as bad as the Legend of Spyro transition for a continuous story but new direction for the series. Clank levels (in Crack at least), the Ship level Select in Crack is great and the Moons idea I love but obviously major level count is shortened as a result, the Constructo weapons were an interesting idea, Raritanium for weapon upgrades is 'fine' but I prefer the 'use it to level up and using mods' approach more as I find +Raritanium Drops, +Bolts, +Range, +Area of Effect bonuses to make sense but be kind of boring and not that beneficial honestly and I hate it in RPGs. It makes sense why they added them but eh I just use the Rartianium to get rid of it rather than to care about it and because your required to use it even if using later game weapons anyways just to survive sometimes in the many battle sections in Tools and Crack, which are basically just the Ratchet 3 Battle missions required (Rykan 5, the Cragmite homeworld and a few others, there is 1 in each Sector), instead of them being optional. The cinematic focus doesn't bother me that much and the games are similar with a few new tweaks some good some dramatic like in Crack In Time, and the humour change makes sense but eh. I don't always expect laugh out loud humour in games but sometimes it's nice and many sad moments can be good but for me if they good too far I just sit in my seat waiting for them to end as I don't care for Drama, I can watch a Drama show and give no care because it's not relatable (never even encountered any of them because I'm not stupid) or even interesting, just tropes reused over and over to try and make me care but I don't. I'd assume numbered health bars is much easier to get quick information than a bar when in combat and guessing how much damage you have taken from enemies. I think this is especially useful for the weapon leveling. In Ratchet 3 I used the weapons menu so much to see how far it was filled rather than just the bar as part of the HUD while in games that don't have it I just use them without a care. It's a small detail but I find it helpful rather than just using it careless and oh, it upgrades with more damage. If a platformer with icons I can understand as you take less hits but if more an action adventure/RPG the numbers make more sense even if in some cases can be all over the place. I notice this a lot when playing Minecraft and going 'so why should I make a Diamond Sword or Enchantments when the common mobs have 20 health and 10 to 19 damage is still 2 hits anyways so it isn't changing anything at all'. Probably doesn't matter in other games but eh sometimes I see a benefit but other times not if the numbers are just too all over the place and the hits don't differ much even with weapon upgrades with crafting, modifications and so on in RPGs or Looter Shooter that have that, I'll just get a drop from an enemy instead of using currency to buy something that lasts a few hours and is useless very quickly and the stats it has only matter for so long. Interesting you say that for the Sixaxis part, I find the Tornado Launcher/Dynamo of Doom to be bad uses for it (I've turned the Sixaxis off in the settings and it doesn't change those weapons uses of it at all, only the Ball Puzzle and fall sections, no clue why, at least in the Australian/EU version I have) but the Ball Puzzles to be reasonable (don't think much of the Falling sections with it) but otherwise using 2 Sixaxis only controllers because my Dualshock 3 died and never replaced it (only issue I have with my Sixaxis controllers is the stick drift and the battery on them sucks so I just use a USB cable that is for charging/connecting to a PSP and a USB extender to reach my console as the length is short, PS4 doesn't do the Sixaxis in PS3 games or work too well so can't use those and I do have Dualsense but they are for the PS5 only) I've not noticed issues with them for the Gyro or the button inputs when playing launch titles I missed like Heavenly Sword or going back to Tools/Crack for those features. I'll have to test again as it's been a while since I've played a game with those Motion Controls (Heavenly Sword I probably played in 2019 I think and is probably the most recent one with them I remember) but yeah good to know that, had no clue. Completely forgot about the intercoms, now I know where the 2016 game's use of them started and how it got worse where I turn all sound off in the settings. XD That and hating the reuse of the Combuster/Groovitron/Zurkon, ah got to love Tools for that. :( At least stepping on Drophyds is a nice detail... Devices also are a 'cool' idea but I never use them. The Leeches and Drone are cool for getting health (similar to the Holo Shield from Ratchet 3 giving you health with later level ups) or different attack options but they feel like something you'd expect as a modifier to existing weapons in past games like the Deadlocked/Gladiator's use of customisation with mods, they sound cool on paper but yeah I barely use them. Sucks they got rid of these as they are a good addition but as I assume no one used them (and the weapon differences or just being modifiers makes more sense), myself included, I don't blame them for getting rid of them. Otherwise Trophies were a thing for PS3 in 2010 (I don't remember which date or for what games, I'd have to check articles for that, but yeah half way through the console's life when the 360 had them from the start even for those on the 360 Arcade Demo disk with 12 achievements for the Full games on it, not the demos) and only some games added them in updates later I assume, I forget which though. Having got all of them around the time they were new I never thought much of them but replaying them every so often (Tools every 3 years sometimes to see the story/Sixaxis holding up or not, Quest and Crack only sometimes because of how much Quest can easily be skipped and Crack I find some parts to be awkward to get into for backtracking). So I don't have nostalgia for them even if I still got them as a kid but I still find them the odd ones of the series but not as bad as other game series that had shift to branch out to new audiences, keep themselves relevant or just because they wanted to. I mean going from Dreamworks adult humour to more Safe and then in the 2010's just Illumination/Sony Animation levels of garbage referential and boring humour/characterisation (the Spinoffs and 2016) and hopefully back on track with Rift Apart. I expect Rift Apart to be more Into The Nexus like in tone and gameplay but with new tweaks, that's my assumption and I'm fine with the answers I have gotten with the trailers of the new, returning and how each character players has me disappointed a bit but I'll see (I like characters to have close but different movesets and not be there for story reasons only, human or not). All 4 One/Full Frontal are just experiments, they can be skipped. Otherwise yeah best to take a break from the series. You do have all the things you need to get Rift Apart but otherwise yeah if you don't think your up for it in a review sort of way that's understandable.

@heartless2147
@heartless2147 3 жыл бұрын
@@francescogiordano5475 Well that can't be true because there are characters that don't exist in the main timeline. Like the other Galactic Rangers, they don't exist in the main universe. Combine that with Cora's headband having the symbol of the Cragmites on it, when they existed in the Polaris Galaxy, it all just makes a nonsensical mess. Like Nefarious being involved, plus being an ex Galactic Ranger, when he didn't appear until Up Your Arsenal. 2016 reboot is an alternate universe, it's not canon to the main continuity which is the one that most fans care about. Insomniac is better off sweeping it under the rug and forgetting it ever happened, like they did with Angela Cross until A Crack in Time.

I'm pretty sure a crack in time ran at a higher fps than into the nexus did, which is a primary reason why the performance seems off and the animation doesn`t look as good. I only got the game to finish the future series and while I really loved the weapons and gameplay the story was lackluster at best and unoriginal at worst. And like you said, Into the Nexus was just far too short. Considering they only charged 40 dollars for it at the time I think they probably knew it was rushed and unfinished.
