So excited about the match so I thought I'd continue my series on the sociopolitical nature of observing the World Cup as a French Professor.

Professor Skye I kinda disagree with one thing your saying. Partially. I’m Irish and for that reason, I do always support any team playing against England. Even France, and Ireland has a worsening relationship with French football following 2009. But while politics does naturally have an involvement in soccer, soccer’s not a portrayal of politics and many times is an escapism from it. To support your national team isn’t to support its wrongdoings, but simply just to show pride in where you’re from. And if you don’t have pride in where you are from, you don’t need to support your country (lots of people from Liverpool don’t support England). Anyway, huge fan and love the videos!

I think this is true; to a point. I watched Canada play Morocco at a movie theatre that was showing the game and hearing some of the fans speaking different languages but all gasping, cheering for Canada at the same moment was one of my proudest moments of being Canadian. However, as Ed Harris' John McCain says in the 2012 HBO film "Game Change" chronicling the 2008 U.S. presidential election, "There's a dark side to American populism; some people win elections by tapping into it." One of the fans when Canada played Croatia had the name of the town that our keeper grew up in in Croatia (as an ethnic Serb) the year he was forced to leave to due ethnic violence, and a modified John Deere sign that said "Nothing runs like Borjan" in refence to his family having to flee to Canada as refugees. Nationalism can have both positive and negative elements and it's important to be careful when displaying it. It can be wonderfully inclusive and positive (see Canadians of different backgrounds coming together) but it can turn ugly fast (see the Croat fans with their disgusting sign).

Yeah... Skye saying that Germany is "a team hard to root for" is kind of very silly... Personally I root for underdogs and teams who play good football

What's the best one? I think it's "The World is Ours" (the original one with David Correy without Aloe Blacc). "Dar Um Jeito" (by Wyclef Jean, Avicii & Santana) and "Oh Africa" (by Akon) also good ("Wavin' Flag" kind of got overplayed in Canada; first as a single, then a remix with a bunch of Canadian artist as a "We Are the World" charity single for the Haiti earthquake before the World Cup version).

I think another issue that makes the choice of who to root for more complicated is that even though it’s true that Morocco was colonised by France and Spain Morocco has occupied Western Sahara since the 1970s despite the native people there wanting independence

The Spain colonization thing is also complicated by the fact that the Moors also colonized Spain for a few centuries

As a Canadian, the cool thing is the only team in the tournament to get a goal against Morocco (albeit an own goal) was Canada, and the Moroccan keeper, Bono, was born in Montreal (but was raised in Morocco). Speaking of your immigration point, our group was crazy in that our keeper, Milan Borjan was an ethnic Serb who was born in Croatia who ended up playing against Croatia in the group stage and Bono, was born in Canada and ended up playing Canada. Also with the first World Cup held in the Middle East, it's cool that Morocco has three different areas/cultures/people it is representing and has rooting for it; Africa, the Arab/Muslim world, and the people from the other continental soccer federations who want to see an non-South American/non-European make/win the final. I have to slightly disagree with you at 9:44 that "everywhere in the world that's not American, has a much more rigid sense of nationality" and say that what helps Canada become the number one country where this is the case (in my opinion) is 1) the bilingual/dual element that's been around since this country was colonized which married French/Roman Catholicism and English/Protestantism which, from the beginning, meant you couldn't define being a "Canadian" as one thing; 2) our small, but still more visible First Nations, Metis, and Inuit population that remind us that everyone here came from somewhere else (where in the States, their share of the population is much lower; hence the continued usage of terms like "Eskimo" and "Indian"); and 3) the official policy of multiculturalism that has encouraged the retention of culture even among communities (like Ukrainian Canadians who've been here for over a 100 years). I think this is really manifested in the fact that our Conservative Party has been called the only centre-right party that actively courts, and relies on, the immigrant vote to get into power (I think of the hijab wearing, motorcycle driving, dental hygienist immigrant from Iran who narrowly lost in a riding in Halifax in the last Nova Scotia election or the PhD/MBA female immigrant from Jamaica who's contested the federal leadership the last two times, even winning the equivalent of the state primary in Saskatchewan) and just the sheer number of first generation immigrants (i.e. people who were born elsewhere) who run for, and serve in our federal and provincial parliaments (iirc, Canada has more Sikhs in the cabinet than India).

Very good points. I *almost* nuanced what I wrote by including Canada along with the US, but I didn’t. (In fact, you can see me hesitate at that exact moment) I don’t mean to keep dissing Canada! (Don’t worry, Alvvays review on the way) 😀🇨🇦🍁

@@fromthedeskofprofessorskye I was going to add I sensed that you didn't mean only America lol I think what America has over Canada is that your country is fundamentally "by, for, and of, the people" as opposed to Canada where we are still technically subjects of His Majesty, King Charles II and his heirs and successors, therefore being an "American" is an entirely self-created concept since it's definition (i.e. who it admits as American, as in a citizenship ceremony) is not affirmed by (nor is contigent on the pledging allegiance to) any monarch but by "the people." And yeah, bit of national pride to see Alvvays make it to NPR's top 50 albums of the year lol

Im a big fan of Hakimi. He was born and raised in Madrid, went through Real Madrid's youth academy and even played for Real Madrid's first team. The standard for world class players with more than one citizenship is the national teams will try to convince the player to play for their teams and most (if not all) of the time players choose the better national team but not Hakimi. As one of the young stars of spanish football the spanish football federation was absolutely sure he was going to pick Spain's national team but to everyone's shock he chose Morocco instead. I dont know much ab Morocco but I'm rooting for Hakimi

That Tchouameni goal was RIDICULOUS! It's the kind of thing I try to do in videogames and never succeed at lol. I'm based in Boston and tend to root for Marseille too (my family is from Provence), altho I admit I don't follow soccer super closely most years. Like you, I'll be rooting for France as I always do, but can't be anything but happy for Morocco if they were to beat us.

I think the entire conversation around which team to root for on principle is moot when at the end of the day you're watching a tournament organized by FIFA and held in Qatar.

I'm rooting for Morocco because they are proving that they can still achieve great things that Europe dominates at despite being regularly exploited by these massive European nations. If England beat France it would be the same. Morocco winning tells athletes, hey you can still wing without playing for the colonizer. This can also boil down to the simple desire for David to beat Goliath.

But in America everyone is not just American? Seams like it's always African-american, Asian-amatican, and then American becomes the "white" or something. Just a thought^^ I wish people could just be people. I loved that video you showed =D This is indeed something about football witch is fantastic

See Americans say that, but the country hasn't (and still does not) treat or view all Americans equally (if you did, Spanish would be an official language as French is in Canada). Your president Teddy Roosevelt (I get I'm assuming you're American lol) said "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans," and his successor, Wilson, ""Any man who carries a hyphen about with him carries a dagger that he is ready to plunge into the vitals of this Republic whenever he gets ready," yet the whole nativist movement in the latter half of the 19th and early 20th century with it's "America First" mantra (used by Wilson in his 1916 re-election campaign and infamously revived by Trump) is predicated on a xenophobia that has historically viewed non Anglo-Saxon Protestant Americans as non (or not really) American (this was arguably the real reason behind Prohibition because a lot of immigrants drank beer). I will say, despite this, as someone with American friends and who has been to America multiple times, people's ancestral heritage is something that is emphasized a lot less than in Canada where being something else and Canadian is not seen as being mutually exclusive.

@@traplover6357 I'm a South East Asian who has never lived in a Western country, and my own country has a lot of human rights issues, so check your judgement. I was talking within the context of this video, where supporting a national team would be supporting what the country as a whole stands for. I know all Moroccan's don't hold the same views (just like not everyone in my own country has a problem with queer people), but the Moroccan government would actively penalize me for being who I am if I lived there. I think I'm allowed to not be super invested in their victory. Kudos to the Moroccan athletes and the team's tremendous performance though. They deserved to reach the semi finals.
