On 7 January 1964, Françoise Hardy was interviewed by ITN's John Edwards in a London hotel room. Two years after being propelled to fame with her 1962 debut single Tous Les Garcons Et Les Filles (All The Girls And Boys), the French singer-songwriter and fashion icon discussed the popularity of different English artists in France. Cliff Richard, whom she liked very much, was very popular, but while the French were aware of the Beatlemania phenomenon gripping the UK, the Beatles' music was not as well-known in France. They were, however, breaking through: She Loves You was a popular track, and their upcoming gig at the Paris Olympia (which Hardy said she would be attending) was sure to raise their profile.

Rip francoise hardy. The pain is gone now. She seemed like a beautiful person. Certainly in her looks, and especially through her songs. A very soothing and understanding voice. She was a part of the soundtrack to my youth.

Hard to imagine this beautiful woman became physically and mentally broken few years ago to the point she advocated for assisted suicide or euthanasia for humans. She’s not in pain anymore. Love her. Find eternal peace Françoise

what a totally adorable woman she was. A clever singer-songwriter also. I discovered her music in the 1980's (back to 1962) and have enjoyed it ever since. Thank you Francoise - we've lost another gem.

I did too, not long ago and still in my 20s. Her presence, discrete elegance, simple yet mesmerizing beauty knew no boundaries in terms of time and space. she's finally resting in peace, but she's definitely live on though her art, visual documents like this one and all she left behind in her long, successful career. French finest rose imo.

I was very famliar with Francoise Hardy, as my mother (who was french) had an album on the Marble Arch label. She had a part in the film Grand Prix 1966, as well as other films. I liked her whispery singing voice which had a certain feeling to it. I think she misunderstood the question about the Beatles 'that certain sound' which she understood as 'song'. A really nice personality who contracted cancer and felt very unhappy towards the end. I've heard it said she wanted to perform when she heard Elvis, like many. So sad, this beautiful lady, suffered but she now suffers no more.

I think the French folks were oriented on the British scene, much more than the Germans in those days. A lot of English and US- hits were sung by French musicians in French versions and were great successes. Françoise was sometimes very kind and charming. She also speaks German very well. I am sad, that she died. She really was a nice girl and a young lady.

No. Germany was more focused on British bands than France and British bands were more focused on Germany than on France. British bands had almost their own TV in Germany on Radio Bremen TV, from where are taken a lot of sixties videos on youtube (Beat Club). The difference is that there were not enough talented singers in Germany to make German versions of songs from British bands and Germans learned easier English than French people, so they needed fewer translations in German. As there were a great number of talented French singers, they adapted a lot of British songs in French for the public that had no good understanding of English. French artists often made better versions in French with American and English songs, with cooler arrangements and voices. But they NEVER managed to do better versions than the Beatles originals. Most French pop-rock bands performed badly, all the attention was focused on solo singers. The same in Italy, where solo singers evolved in their own national super-league division on its own. This changed in the late sixties and early seventies, especially in Italy with hundreds of top heavy progressive bands. German sixties bands were VERY poor too, it only started to change with early seventies Kraut rock (electronic & heavy rock). The best sixties bands in Europe outside UK were in Spain and in second / third place were Sweden and the Netherlands. Switzerland was almost a desert in the sixties regarding good pop-rock singers and bands, Belgium was much more interesting. This fantastic early 1965 song from Françoise Hardy is very little known, the vocals have a mind-blowing Mersey sound touch : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jslmqsqFy6etfqc.htmlsi=UT0PSSuMq_XeQpoi Some songs from Françoise where adapted in French from the Italian scene, like this one in 1966, far better than the Italian original from Mina : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ab2eks6hmrLFmaM.htmlsi=uK6MVRECvQ1wVC68 The Italian original released in may 1966 : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbaEg6Z81LadnYU.htmlsi=Zd3Mvh3AatFtYPDg

A year or so back I came across footage of Francoise "seeing the sites of London" circa 1965 and in and around Picadilly circus. Moreover, she's in a pub and trying some warm, brown English beer "Watney's Red Barrel". You can tell she finds in revolting. Tell m that I've not imagined this scenario.
