Frank Marino was a hard acid rock guitarist who rose to fame with his band Mahogany Rush in the late 60's and on into the 70's. Many compared him to Jimi Hendrix and reporters came up with some wild stories about the Frank and Jimi connection. This video will cover Franks early life and what he has to say about the Hendrix stories.

I got to see Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush in Seattle 1975. They opened for Montrose and Black Sabbath. Frank Marino came out and stole the show. I understood back then, even though I was only 15, why he was compared to Hendrix. He played The Star Spangled Banner. He played the guitar with his teeth and behind his head. We went to a TON of concerts in Seattle in the '70s and '80s at many different venues. This particular concert was my all-time favorite and most memorable. I'd never heard of Mahogany Rush or Frank Marino prior to the concert. Afterward, I ran out and bought Strange Universe and have been a huge fan ever since.

I saw Mahogany Rush in the mid 70's in Louisville, KY at The Garden. Paid less than $2 for the ticket and sat 3 rows back right in front of Frank. By the way, that tour became their live album!

If you’re interested… the album “Mahogany Rush 4” will change your life. More recently, Frank Marino live at the Agora theatre is a true testament to this man’s talents. His vocals are equally as stellar & one of a kind. Thanks for the presentation, well done

I saw Frank in the summer of 1979 opening for Kansas. He was great. Unfortunately that was the only time that I saw him. I believe that the band played All Along The Watchtower.

A buddy and I went to see him when we were high school in 1980 at the Long Beach Arena in California, and it was the loudest concert I have ever been to, hands down. There was a kid and his parents seated next to us, a kid who looked like he had some issues with drugs and alcohol, perhaps, and his parents were there to be supportive and keep him out of trouble. 30 seconds in, they were furiously stuffing Kleenex in their ears with a horrified look on their faces. To their credit, they made it through the entire concert. Our ears rang for a week afterwards, and I'll never forget the look on the parent's faces.

I seen him in '78 or '79 at Comiskey Park for their second year of Summer Jam. Their were I believe 5 or 6 bands and I forget which ones went together because I was at both of them! But I do remember that Frank Marino had a cast on his right hand and after a little while he went backstage and had them take it off because he said that it was limiting him too much! I read that in a paper review the next day.

Frank Marino is a true innovator with guitar techniques. 1. Behind the bridge guitar picking to produce one off sounds. 2. Backward guitar lines live in real time. 3. Faux slide playing/sound emulation with a primitive Gibson Vibrola Tremelo system. 4. Master of sounds equal to or surpassing even the great Adrian Belew. I wonder if Frank Marino was ahead of the curve with the Wet/Dry/Wet/ live amp set ups that became popular in the 80's. Was he doing that in the 70's? He also had and used one of the first wireless guitar receiver prototypes live from Schafer-Vega. (1976?)

Saw Frank & MR with Humble Pie / Angel / Mothers Finest at the Hampton Coliseum in 1980. All different, all great that day. Funny, I can’t find any reference as to the specific date, but that lineup was touring in that area, at that time

Saw him at the Warner Theater in DC for $1.01 for a DC101 radio promotion in 1978. He had a wall of Acoustic amps, and a daisy chain of 9 effect pedals. Big sound! Great show. The bass player could play and dance shuffle like James Brown. As I hit my mid 60s, I know about the frozen shoulder and trying to play guitar issue too.

Was Franks set up very complicated and/or different than what other guitarists were doing at the time do you know? People mentioned this wet/dry/wet amp set up that was popular in the 80's. It has been said that VanHalen used this but didn't invent this type of amp set up.
