yes... BUT... Zappa was also contradictory... he did it all the time... makes fun of the Stones... but actually LIKED the Stones... makes fun of 50's music... but LOVES 50's music... calls drum machines freeze dried drums and then starts exclusively making music on a Snyclavier... Zappa was FULL of paradoxes... so don't be so sure he actually disbelived... or disavowed the theories put forward in that book... I've looked all over for Frank talking about it and he never really says it's wrong or stupid... he just questions it.

As much as I love Dweezil and what he does, there is nothing like the original. This song was one of the ones that really showed Ruth's amazing abilities, which is likely why she gets the shout out in the lyrics at the end. I had heard this song plenty of times before I saw the video, and seeing that final flourish she does at the end increased my respect for her exponentially. Sad that she left the music world, but she does have two children who are classical musicians, not surprising in the least. I get the same feeling about this incarnation of Zappa's bands. and though I like each for what they brought to the table, this one is the one I enjoy watching the most. The later bands may have been technically superior in some respects, this one had a more organic feel, just a group of amazing musicians having a ball performing. I never got to see this incarnation, but I saw every other after it live, and I still like this one better. IMHO

"Guacamole queen at the Armadillo in Austin Texas" I assume Ruth's favorite food was confirmed at the Armadillo. As for the Inca Roads reference, in the 70s, considerable attention was paid to aliens visiting ancient Ican civilizations. Many a rock band worked that theme, so this is Zapa mocking their silliness. And while I'm here, I know the front-line gets a lot of attention, so kudos to Tom Fowler, Chester Thompson, and Ruth Underwood. This too is my favorite lineup. What an all-star cast.

Best live lineup to grace a stage ever. Simply masterful. The chemistry this band had was sick. I’ve seen this video oh so many times and I’ve seen a number of reactions. I think it’s important that first time viewers see Bruce Bickford’s claymation work. Imagine the time it took to record that frame by frame. Yet I yearn for a video version of this song without the claymation just so I can watch the band play, particularly Franks beautiful solo. It’s on tape obviously, most likely locked away in the vault. Great request, great reaction as always!

It's amazing how closely this live version mirrors the studio cut on the album. The main variance of course was Frank's solo, which is not surprising, as he never played anything exactly the same twice. His musicians had to though, probably the most well rehearsed band(s) ever. Frank was a demanding task master.

This was the first song I ever heard by Zappa in 1975 (from his album One Size Fits All".) I've been a fan ever since.
@johnbidochka2795
@johnbidochka2795 2 жыл бұрын
FZ multi-track recorded this entire performance - the basic tracks from this song were used on the album version on "One Size Fits All", and were largely kept intact. The finished version on the album included several vocal overdubs, and the guitar solo was "flown in" from a 1974 performance of the same song from Helsinki (check out You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 2 to hear it in its original context), a process FZ came to call "Xenocrony".
@Frunobulax74
@Frunobulax74 2 жыл бұрын
@John Bidochka - Since Inca Roads on OSFA uses the guitar solo from the same song from Helsinki in place of the KCET performance, it isn't Xenochrony. Frank explains Xenochrony: Friendly Little Finger - recorded in a dressing room at Hofstra University and over-dubbed at the Record Plant, Los Angeles and originally released on the album Zoot Allures. This is one of the earliest examples of a technique I developed called Xenochrony (strange synchronizations). Other examples include "Rubber Shirt" on Sheik Yerbouti and every guitar solo on Joe's Garage except "Watermelon In Easter Hay". In this technique various tracks from unrelated sources are randomly synchronized with each other to make a final composition with rhythmic relationships unachievable by other means. In ordinary polyrhythmic terms we speak of 5 in the space of 4, or 7 in the space of 6. In Xenochrony we deal with larger units of time; a complete solo at one metronomic rate in the space of a track at another ... sort of like Monday and Tuesday crammed into the space of Wednesday. The solo and drone bass was recorded on a 2-track Nagra, 15 ips, with a pair of Neumann U-87 microphones in a rather wet-sounding dressing room, warming up before a concert at Hofstra University on Long Island. This pair of tracks was later Xenochronized to a drum track out-take from "The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution". The introductory orchestration was added next, and then the Hofner bass (recorded at half-speed), rhythmically splitting the difference between the two different track tempos. Zappa dubbed the technique "xenochrony," from the Greek words xeno (strange or alien) and chrono (time). As he explained, "In this technique, various tracks from unrelated sources are randomly synchronized with each other to make a final composition with rhythmic relationships unachievable by other means." For example, in the case of the Zoot Allures track "Friendly Little Finger," the solo guitar and bass were recorded in a dressing room on a 2-track Nagra and then later combined with an unrelated drum track for a piece called "The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution," with additional instrumentation scored to complement the newly produced time signatures. Xenochrony proved to be a powerful new compositional tool for Zappa, and he returned to it many times over later albums. Well, a classic "xenochrony" piece would be "Rubber Shirt", which is a song on the Sheik Yerbouti album. It takes a drum set part that was added to a song at one tempo. The drummer was instructed to play along with this one particular thing in a certain time signature, eleven-four, and that drum set part was extracted like a little piece of DNA from that master tape and put over here into this little cubicle. And then the bass part, which was designed to play along with another song at another speed, another rate in another time signature, four-four, that was removed from that master tape and put over here, and then the two were sandwiched together. And so the musical result is the result of two musicians, who were never in the same room at the same time, playing at two different rates in two different moods for two different purposes, when blended together, yielding a third result which is musical and synchronizes in a strange way. That's xenochrony. And I've done that on a number of tracks.

A good example of the big part Ruth Underwood and George Duke played in that lineup. There is also an acoustic guitar cover of this song by Mike Keneally, one of Frank's later guitarists. "Inca Roads" is about the theories in the book Chariots of the Gods, which said the ancient Incas built landing strips for aliens. The synth sounds George Duke was making at the beginning were supposed to represent a space ship. This is the first Zappa song I play for somebody, rather than a song with subject matter that might turn the listener off.

My all-time favorite Frank tune and, I suspect, many would say the same. I'm hard pressed to think of a version of the solo that doesn't make me well-up at its beauty. I highly recommend checking out the version on "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Volume 2: The Helsinki Concert". It's the complete version of the solo that Frank included on the "studio version" on "One Size Fits All", but without the cuts from that album. 1. George Duke said (paraphrasing here) this was the best band Frank put together, we (the band) could do anything, we knew what he wanted even when he winked his eye. 2. The world seems to think that Sledgehammer was the first clay animation to song/ music. 3. In the comments on the last Frank Zappa reaction you did, some of us discussed what we will now call the Frank Zappa trademark moustache, some one requested you shave and leave the Zappa trademark on your face like so many of us have in respect to a genius. 4. will you do it? the challenge is on.

Ok... I know you guys are waiting for Chris to give you little inside stories... and... you're right... there's a ton of them. First of all I don't know what a Guacolmole Queen is, but I have a feeling we don't really want to know. Now... about the scratch sounds... specifically... that is a setting on that old synth called WHITE NOISE... and he had osscilators that would control the width, speed and rate of noise ratio... push it down... slower... up...faster. George Duke did not want to be a singer... he thought he couldn't sing... Frank Zappa convinced him to start singing.... just a little bit... and within a year had brought out the singer you hear on this song. For the two years that George Duke played with Zappa... he REFUSED to play a Synthisezer... He was a Jazz musician, and he only played piano... electric piano and organ... Zappa finally convinced him that it was "ok" for a jazz musician to be seen playing a synth... and within a year... you had the keyboard player you hear in this song. About the song... this is basically the same version that can be found on the "Studio" album One Size Fits All--- with some changes and additions... in case you decide to listen to the Album Version.... There are some harmonies added to George Dukes vocals here and there... some extra synths to accompany the synth noises you here at the beginning here and at a point later on in the song near the end. And the guitar solofrom this concert was cut out after the first 5 notes on the album and switched with the one that appears on a concert from Helsinki from the same year ... and THAT guitar solo has a few edits in it as well. About the animation... I noticed you guys didn't really mention the animation.... here's the story... One morning... Frank was up and getting some coffe in the kitchen in his house... this is rare... Frank was a night owl, but on this day... he was there... so he was the guy that noticed that someone had climbed over the gates, and was standing on his back porch with a bag under his arm... Frank opened the door, and said "Can I help you?" to the guy outside... This guy looked a bit weird... uncut crazy hair... beard, and very obviously high on something.... The man with the bag pulled some 8mm tape reels out of his bag. "My name is Bruce Bickford, and you MUST see these tapes." Frank Zappa said... "ok" and let Bruce Bickford into his home, and they watched the 8mm tapes on Frank's projector. You just watched many of those reels.

@Zolar Czakl You mean autotune before autotune?;) I honestly don’t hear it, I hear differences in the phrasing also, but I’ll take your word for it if you’re positive; I suppose overdubbing and/or other techniques might have done the trick.

@Zolar Czakl That’s always been my impression as far as what I can discern by ear, that the track is basically the KCTV and Helsinki versions fused, with some exceptions like George’s vocals redone in the studio.

1:44 you see Frank conducting tempo while all the crazy vocals are happening? When you notice that, you'll also hear the rhythm in all the voices. And this video is one reason why I say Frank is a top Tier guitarist. On par with Jimi Hendrix and Alan Holdsworth. Those are my three personal favorites.

Inca Roads is making fun of the idiots who read "Chariots of the Gods" A racist book claiming aliens built the Inca temples because the locals weren't up to it. Chester's thing on Ruth!!! George's vocals are sung in a Flora Purim manor. She is from Brazil and was doing a lot of Jazz fusion at this time.
