Zoot Allures is one of those atmospheric backgrounds over which Frank builds a different solo each time. I'm not crazy about this particular one, but I do love the close-ups of his finger work. What the best composers do with rich harmonies, Frank also does with fractional time.

I saw Frank soundcheck this down in France in 84. We were queuing, the weather was merde and they let us in early. The first time I saw him live. He said something like thanks for coming, then played it right through. Said "enjoy the show" and was back two hours later. Honestly I'd have been happy with that soundcheck. What a difference to the capitalist work over many concerts are now. One of the reasons I fell in love with the handsome Italian stallion.

I love this, the whole show. A small ensemble by Frank's standards but brilliant nevertheless. This is a kick in the ass to the pre 78 fans on 2 counts when some say Frank's guitar playing in the '80's was weak and that the humour was not there. Watch this show to see otherwise. Shout out to Dick Ahoy. The silly notion I love Vinnie. Chad is my favourite and best Zappa drummer, so it's Chad I love😉. Great reaction as usual guys and keep 'em coming.
@HakanTunaMuzik

i call those pre Zappa fans old farts because that's what they are, Zappa carried on creating new sounds all the way through the 80's while the old farts stood still stuck in the 70's. As for his guitar playing, for me his peak was 80-82, but loved the sound and style of 84
@paulfenwick8767
@paulfenwick8767 Жыл бұрын
@@HakanTunaMuzik I agree with your first bit especially. Saw one comment saying Chad's drumming was cold. It's exactly the sound Zappa wanted and spent time convincing Chad to use the electronic drums. I guess if you don't like it, you never really got Zappa. I love Frank's guitar playing across all the years and that it fitted whatever he played. I believe he got better every year. Lot's of critizism of the '88 tour but it contains some of my favourite solo's. Some were a lot more subtle than earlier solos and more importantly, he wasn't just a guitarist. In some of his later stuff, he let other aspects of his genius take the lead, which was just as satisfying for me.

@Zolar Czakl That would have surprised me also but also an indication of versatility and feel in my opinion. Then he goes onto Holdsworth. One of the reasons too I rate Vinnie above Bozo. Have you seen the amount and range of artists he has played with? Then some knuckle dragger says he can only play Mclaughlin style music😆

If you wanted to laugh you should see the song you cut off that overlaps the first one. That is an improved version of the 81 release of Tinseltown Rebellion Band. The parodic side of Zappa really shines on that performance and the visual side of it adds to it.

I like the guitar solo better on the album. This one sounded like Chunga’s Revenge, which is not bad but on a different track already. Perhaps you heard the album version with the semi acoustic guitar? But what I always like that he never failed to introduce the members of the current band. That has always been Frank’s trademark

How many cool modalities that Frank was using all those notes that are just so outside you know and of course those three augmented chords well actually maybe like five chords and then I think one of them is like an octave below and then it comes up and then up again and you know and then does it sing but wow pretty stuff man and pretty girl all right kids remember Brooklyn holds the charmer over me I wonder if you've done that one? I would think you would have had to yeah so famous group The Steely stones they do a song called can't you hear me do it again

I love this song, one of my favorites, but I stick to the studio version because I don't really think it's a great vehicle for the noodling guitar solos he does in it while playing live. The album version is exactly what I need from this song - perfectly composed and played and the outro solo is short, sweet and spot on. The harmonics he hits in the studio outro solo are amazing. Also, I can't stand the '84 electric drum sound! (This might be '88, but I feel the same about these electric drums also!). I actually have those Simmons hex pads if anyone's interested!

Come on, you guys, this a great solo. It's not very rock oriented because it's kinda more abstract. But this is Frank Zappa, not Yngwie Malmsteen or that kind of (boring) shredders. If you take the time to listen more carefully you will find the phrasing is very intelligent, very musical and unique. Frank's standards are so above the mainstream that even some of his fans tend not to be very impressed when they don't like it so much at the first hearing. But Frank is what he is because you can listen to him your whole life and always discover new things. If you get everything at the first hearing why should you listen some more? It would be fucking boring. Ask yourselves how many so-called 'guitar gods' would begin a show and deliver a solo as interesting as this one? This is not about speed, technique, or wide open mouths. This is about musical sense and personality.
