This was Frank's attempt to collaborate with Captain Beefheart. It was rare that Frank collaborated equally with anyone except for informal jams. But Frank had a lot of respect and admiration for Beefheart and this piece reflects that.

I remember "brown" Lebanese hashish, but not on this album. I think it was more Yes then (Tales From topographic Oceans, Close To The Edge)

It was insane sounding, but I had already gotten on the Zappa train with Freak Out -- While later albums had more cohesiveness, Freak Out contains everything that Zappa wanted -- Avant Garde, musical proficiency, biting commentary, and general strangeness. (With just a touch of a nod to prior genres.)

We thought, this is Zappa in New York, try Little House I Used To Live In from Burnt Weenie Sandwich, for more of what we'd seen in this band's capturing Zappa meets Jazz-fusion for anti-hippy punks, who grew up on Bop/ Rythm & Blues. Captain Beefheart & Ry Cooder toured, just as we got this! Get the vinyl or remaster, not the 80s CD!

Don "Sugarcane" Harris, violin. The story is Frank got him out of jail and his violin out of hock so he could play on the record.

@@markbyers1651 - Don and Dewey, which consisted of Don "Sugarcane" Harris and Dewey Terry, were from Pasadena and were active from 1956 to 1964. Don and Juan, Roland "Don" Trone and Claude "Juan" Johnson, were from New York state, and existed in that form from the early 1961until Don's death in 1982.

In Zappa's book, he said: "My lyrics are there for entertainment purposes only -- _not to be taken internally._ Some of them are *truly stupid,* some are slightly less stupid and a few of them are sort of funny. Apart from the snide political stuff, which I enjoy writing, the rest of the lyrics wouldn't exist at all if it weren't for the fact that we live in a society where instrumental music is irrelevant -- so if a guy expects to earn a living by providing musical entertainment for folks in the U.S.A., he'd better figure out how to do _something_ with a human voice plopped on it."

This is the album that turned my 13 year old self into a life long Zappa fanatic! Around 1970 we (finally) got FM radio stations including local collage radio and one Sunday night program used Peaches En Regalia to open & close the show - I had to call and find out what it was - "It's Zappa kid, go out and get some!"

Singer is Captain Beefheart, high school friend of Zappa's and a great and original performer in his own right. "Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band" was some sort of avantgarde bluesband, Everyone in this band usually played idifferent tempos and melody lines at the same time which resulted in crazy out-of-this-world songs.. His singing was very much inspired by Howlin' Wolf. First and foremost he was a lyrical abstract painter.

There are few words that are capable of accurately conveying what Beefheart's music sounds like, and none of it would've happened without the valiant efforts of guys like John French who drove themselves crazy trying to bring Beefheart's ideas to life. I used to date a girl whose dad was in Beefheart's band when he was 19 yrs old and he had some wild stories haha

@@markbyers1651 Yes, that and _Well_ really highlight Beefheart's poetry. Also _Sam With the Showing Scalp Flat Top_ is a really interesting poetry piece he did with Zappa on the Zappa album _Bongo Fury._

Probably my favorite guitar track of all time. Everything in this song grooves together so perfectly. The time passes so fast. if you're looking for some more great guitar and absolutely insane bass work check out the less-heralded Zappa track "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution". I prefer the version from the Lather album.

@LV Looper - The Lather version cuts out nearly 5 minutes of the beginning of The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution. The original Sleep Dirt album version is far superior. If you are a Zappa fan, why would you want less of that fantastic song?

This song is based on a 14-year old groupie's story from New York. She told Frank about her step=father whom she trailed down to the Lido Hotel,. She and her friend made up this story about him Of course, she had no idea what brilliant music would be added.

This is the song that got me hooked on Zappa at 11 years old The radio and MTV were dominated by Paula Abdual, MC Hammer, and horrible glam/hair rock/metal bands and I turned to The Beatles when my dad saw that he knew I was ready and played me Willie The Pimp 30 years later we still jamming together to the best music ever recorded going to see King Crimson and The Zappa Band in a few weeks

Ah yeah...one of the finest extended guitar jams ever put to wax and probably the first record to really establish FZ as a guitarist to be reckoned with (1969). Special shout out to John Guerin on those drums!

@@SightAfterDark that's an understatement, his guitar had the right to charge him with assault and battery after that assault on it. Seven straight minutes of relentless jamming, and no way to get bored because he mixes it up so well that there is never a lull in the action...a truly amazing jam. I haven't seen your reaction to this yet, but the way you responded to MM, I'm betting you are still reeling from these two Zappa classics...

@Tim Cardona - So true. This is the song that gained recognition for Frank as a unique and respected guitarist soloist. Invocation & Ritual Dance Of The Young Pumpkin on Absolutely Free is an earlier example of extended soloing, but Willie is on a higher level.

@Thomas - Fantastic point! I think most FZ fans hope a new listener that seems to really enjoy Frank's music will continue and expand with it because of all the listening pleasure it will give them. I personally have succeeded only a handful of times in turning people onto FZ music in 40+ years.

Of course! The thing that’s so great about this channel is that we get exposed to so many artist we didn’t know previously. Some aren’t our favorites, and some we absolutely love. Frank definitely falls into the second category :)

Anything on this album is gold. Peaches en regalia is one of my favourites. Gumbo Variations is also great. The song you picked here is the only vocal track on the album. Everything else is straight Zappa groove, and great.

Saw Dweezil play this (entire Hot Rats album) right before covid. It was sooper-dope and even had the ratchet parts! You two should totally consider reacting to Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart (produced by Zappa). IT IS OUT THERE. Same era as Hot Rats, too.

Yes we were in our week teenagers we went down to the Lido hotel because we’re about 45 miles from Los Angeles here in Palmdale California where Frank Zappa and Don grew up and we observed the ladies of the evening or the ladies that would hang out in the hotel …. A shout out to Sugarcane Harris on the violin Pre-high school and college were obsessed with Frank’ Zappa and Don van Vliet ..

Awesome to see you 2 getting more and more into Frank's world of avante garde imagination and more importantly, the "conceptual continuity" of your own experiences in life while listening to almighty ZAPPA. Since you've gotten this far into his music, you must go back to the beginning which is the album FREAK OUT! I would recommend WHO Are The Brain Police? or the original version of Trouble Every Day.

Don "Sugarcane" Harris also does a great job playing lead blues violin and singing on a cover of Little Richard's "Directly From My Heart To You" on the Weasels Ripped My Flesh album. There is actually no lead guitar, just lead violin.

Great observations as always In a perfect world Zappa would've just composed and played guitar solos, but the fickle nature of the marketplace resulted in a growing emphasis on vocals and if you were to watch a full show from the late 70s/80s you would hear mostly vocal material with a few instrumentals and lots of guitar solos. BTW the rhythm section, Max Bennet & john guerin, played on tons of classic albums from 70s

Also while I’m having my memories of us youngsters being approximately 17 later on the group I was with a guy named Dennis Morris he was a brilliant guitarist although he never became famous he told me that Frank used a lot of Greek nodes and modes in his guitar solos I’m not smart enough to know what that is but my friend dennis Morris he knew and he was one of the greatest guitarist ever hung around with again he never became famous or rich

If you ever decide to check out Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, as some of your commenters have suggested, I would recommend you marinade in Clear Spot and The Spotlight Kid for a few weeks first, this should prevent mental scarring. 😊

Hah, while I prefer the thornier, more avant-garde Beefheart myself, those ARE the albums I break others in on to the dear ol' Captain. Safe as Milk is another; my wife likes that one.

there are different mixes of this floating around out there, with this one the violin, voice and guitar are less clear, and the percussion is much more clear than the mix I have on cd.

This was recorded in 1969, so it's the oldest Zappa track I think you guys have been exposed to. If I may suggest another track recorded in 1969, although from a different album, please listen to The Little House I Used To Live In. It also has Don Sugarcane Harris on it, which is always a treat, and the piece is a great composition masterfully executed by The Mothers of Invention.

Great suggestion! That's "Burnt Weenie Sandwich," boys and girls. Almost any track is a winner on this album, but Little House (all 18:42 of it!) is masterful (and -- mostly -- live!). FZ's brief "interaction" with an audience member at the end is also a classic moment. 👍😂

@@abbazabbado The "interaction" with the audience heckler is infamous and I read something about it either in Frank's book (The Real Frank Zappa Book) or elsewhere. In a nutshell, it happened in Berlin in 1968, where according to Frank there were a number of more militant minded students trying to stir the more relaxed party mood into one of activism. Frank later wrote Holiday In Berlin (with lyrics) due to this experience.

Fortunately, some surreptitious taper back in the day captured a performance of the remarkable band fronted by Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan (Flo & Eddie) wherein 'Holiday in Berlin' was covered (with lyrics) in strictly lo-fi -- but with full "Brectian" theatricality. This stellar performance (though some "fans" may recoil in horror at the Flo & Eddie band, never mind the fillum '200 Motels') was "immortalized" on the FZ 'Beat the Boots' LP entitled 'Freaks & Motherf*#@%!' You can find this track (WITH film from the actual Berlin event . . . at no extra charge!) on YT by searching for "holiday in berlin san francisco" or the more complete cut at "mudshark holiday in berlin". Enjoy! ✌️😎

Oh, and note to the Sight After Dark folks and any other interested parties: Once you've heard/reviewed 'Waka/Jawaka' (from album of same), 'Inca Roads' (from 'One Size Fits All'), 'Peaches en Regalia' (from the above 'Hot Rats' -- NOTE: It's more than 50 YEARS OLD!) and 'Zombie Woof' (from 'Overnight Sensation'), and have gotten to know them pretty well, do a YT search for 'Berklee Zappa Tribute' and prepare to be AMAZED! A truly international collection of "kids" from the school -- none of them born within decades of when these tunes were first released -- absolutely blow the doors off this brilliantly arranged medley. Never fails to bring tears to this old Zappaphile's eyes. Deepest respect to this new generation, and HIGHLY recommended. 👍😲✨

Beefheart was too weird even for Zappa eventually-they fell out in the mid 1970's after doing a tour where Beefheart did little but sit on stage drawing & getting drunk. His albums were even less commercial sounding than Zappa's.

I love Beef man. I'll stick with my much better image... and final story of how my Cap'n went down with his ship matey... thanks anyway..... faded like a fucking rock god is supposed to fade away and die on stage... however the fuck he wants too...... remind me not to ask you to write my obituary eh.... sheesh.

I have a few Zappa CDs, I just don't get the appeal. "Joe's Garage" has some catchy songs but otherwise it's all sarcasm and jazz noodling, not my bag.
