Halloween has arrived, and the Nerd is green with anger at finding out that there are bad video games on the NES and SNES that have been based on another horror legend - Frankenstein. With the aid of a very special-guest reviewer to share in the misery, The Nerd has dug-up three not-so-classics from the 8 and 16 bit era which are clunkier then the main protagonist they feature. He'll be going green with re-appearing bosses, knock-off Street-Fighter moves and infuriating password screens. Enough to make anyone wish theyd never been born (again).
He'll also discover that the monster he's created isn't just sat with him on the couch but embedded deep within his soul, forcing him to carry on torturing himself with terrible games until it destroys him. He should really have listened to Doctor Waldman.....

James’ dedication to beating Frankenstein, even as he’s being strangled by FrankenNerd, brings to mind the reputed last words of Archimedes of Syracuse. It’s said that as his city was being sacked, the elderly mathematician implored the soldier about to strike him down: “Wait until I have finished my [math] problem!”

This is a great review because the side character (the monster) is fucking hilarious, it's a nice concise video, the game has epic difficulty, and there's some great laughs. Just a tightly written, quality video :)

I love the fight scene with the monster at the end. One of the best AVGN moments for sure. The awesome remix, the editing, the crazy atmosphere, the expressions on the Nerd's face - it's all peak AVGN.

Dat password "PHUCKEWE" That should be the password to get rid of hit detection, missable platforms, one hit kills, too tough bosses, no continues, you jump backward when hit and to turn on time in the game, so that you have to beat the stage in a certain amount of time.

I always thought the bird was a passage to another level. Ergo, I never completed the first stage. Seriously, most people expect a bird that carries you to be either said passage, a shortcut, or either of the Legend of Zelda bird species: Loftwings in Skyward Sword or Cuccos in most other 3D Zelda games. I love this episode, Mike as Frankenstein's monster is so puerile but hilarious, especially when he makes the jerk-off motion. Shame about the interlacing on the upload, like it was ripped off a dvd then not deinterlaced.

My brother got me The Adventures of Dr. Franken when it came out. I don't talk smack about gifts, but the Nerd's complaints about the controls are spot-on. It's a shame though, because the level design was pretty neat, with lots of emphasis on exploration and lots of neat little details. Also, all the monsters in the game had lots of personality and whoever the artists are really did a great job. Not to mention that it has a really kicking soundtrack. But as the Nerd once said, the most important part of the game is being able to play the game, and the controls were slippery and awkward. I can't imagine most people putting in the effort to master it.
