Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is one of the most famous science fiction/monster stories of all time. It has been adapted many times, but I will be comparing it with the Boris Karloff movies as well as the 1994 version.

I’ve always known that my fourth great grandfather was Dr James Lind of Scotland, 1726-1812. What I recently discovered is that he was experimenting with electricity to animate dead muscles. Percy Shelley was a friend of his. Percy was Mary Shelly’s husband. Mary had a nightmare about reanimating dead things which prompted her to write Frankenstein. My great grandfather inspired Mary Shelley.

The Hallmark mini-series (2 nights) starring Alec Neuman as Frankenstein and Luke Goss as the creature is the most accurate movie to the book that I have seen. It was WAY MORE faithful to the book that "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein". I highly recommend the Hallmark version. It has more pathos and sadness... and that is what the book is about - the tragedy of rejection.

Yes! I'm glad someone said it. The 2004 miniseries is so good. It's easily the most accurate and faithful representation of the book. And the cast is phenomenal.

I have been binge watching your content! Your videos deserve more views, honestly. To second what everyone has said, your shirt is 🤌. I read Frankenstein in high school but remember only bits and pieces. The version of Frankenstein that I remember the most is Young Frankenstein. Love that movie, even though it's not true a true adaptation. I also believe that the book is really symbolic; it's not really about the monster but what the monster represents.

thank you so much!! And I love Young Frankenstein, so hilarious! And agreed, it is a great story when you see the surface level version, but when you look into the deeper symbolism it makes it even better.

Great points all around. I appreciate and agree with all your points of the novel, although I don't love the 1994 version as much as you do. I recommend watching Frankenstein: The True Story, just because it was a good made for TV movie at the time, and not for the faithfulness of the book. Did you know that Frankenstein is considered the very first science fiction story ever written? Also, she wrote the book off a nightmare she had, after a party at a chateau on Lake Geneva where her husband's (Percy Shelly) friend, Lord Byron, announced a contest where the guests should all write ghost stories? One of the guests, John Polidori wrote what is considered the first vampire story written in English, The Vampyre, in which he based his vampire on Lord Byron. Just good trivia... Another good video, thank you! You have a nice, easy demeanor and engaging way of speaking.

I have never seen a Frankenstein movie, so its really interesting to hear that the 1994 film might be better than the book!

It's really not, though. It's one of Branagh's worst films. It's closer than other adaptations but this is one of those instances where being a more accurate adaptation doesn't necessarily mean a better movie. It's basically an insanely overly melodramatic coked out rollercoaster cranked up to 11. It's chaotic and frenetic and basically never slows down and the camera is constantly spinning and swirling, even when nothing is really happening.

You should consider reviewing Dracula also. The book, & the 1992 movie which I think is the best. I can see why "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein" did not work well for audiences, both the book & the movie are more cerebral & people just want to see creatures, horror, & gore in general with a more simple plot.

Definitely plan on covering that one next year! And you make a good point about Frankenstein being more cerebral

Yeah... The movie is "too cerebral"... THAT'S the reason it didn't work with audiences. Okay. *Note - strong sarcasm

Is it the full miniseries or condensed movie edit? Because the edited version is missing over an hour and is really disjointed.

Yes indeed. I often wonder nowadays "What happened to sense of Style?" For both men and women...Years ago I had an incident with a marvelous kitten Melorra who scratched my cornea while late-night reading, emergency room visit, ended with an eyepatch for a couple of weeks, which got me cache in the clubs I frequented at the time. Kinda a babe- magnet., a Lord Byron kinda thing...couple of years later I had a leg operation that meant me using a cane for a month. Why are some women so attracted to wounded men? Intrinsic attraction to "male warrior scars"? A care-taker impulse

I've watched the 94 movie twice. I like aspects of it. But overall, i really hate it. It's one of those movies that for some reason I wish I liked and want to give another rewatch/chance. But I can't stand it. Shockingly, Robert DeNiro is one of the few aspects of this movie I didn't hate. Some of the smaller supporting roles are handled rather well. BUT... The musical score is bombastic. The frenetic constantly spinning camera work is distracting. The hammy over the top acting from Kenneth drives me crazy. It's like Kenneth Branagh was coked out of his mind during this movie. Almost every scene, the energy level is cranked up to 11. Even the parts of this movie that do actually pull directly from the novel replace the somber tone and slower pace with frantic melodrama and are so tonally incongruous with the source material it might as well be something else entirely. I enjoyed the book. And certain adaptations. I much prefer the 2004 miniseries starring Alec Newman and Luke Goss, William Hurt and Donald Sutherland.

Yeah the Brannagh movie is very over the top, but that's partly what I love about it! I haven't seen the 2004 version, I'll have to look itt up!

@@WhytheBookWins fair warning, it's very slow paced. But that's what I like about it. If you enjoy more fast paced energetic films, it might not be your cup of tea.
