This is really so accurate. Only things missing were Apple Maps telling you to make a U-turn on the freeway. Or to get back on the freeway when you’re right next to your destination. Or telling you you’re at your destination while you’re passing it by on the freeway. I also know some people who apparently have two of the three open at once so they can simultaneously give different and conflicting directions. 🙃

Had to give up and call a coworker to come lead me there, cuz New Jersey roads suck. I swear they make it extra confusing to get drivers to pay the same tolls multiple times. Jokes on them. Yes, kids, it's true. We really did print out maps and travel like pirates. And that was an upgrade from the days of buying a giant map at a book store that had been printed before that last wave of infrastructure construction and could never be refolded back into its most compact form. Ahh, the good ol' days when road trips were so much more complicated and frustrating.

Don’t forget the custom AAA TripTik maps - my parents drove us across the US using those, with the highways sections under construction denoted by a AAA employee using a highlighter marker. Good times and good for at least one fight per trip only narrowly avoiding ending your parents marriage over whether or not the family was lost and if you should have stopped to ask directions (mom- yes, dad - no & you have no idea how to read a map).

I used to buy a new atlas each year. Used to only use road signs and the atlas was planning and backup. I was driving back to my duty station in New England from the Florida Panhandle one holiday and missed the I-59 fork, I didn’t realize it until passing the “Tennessee Welcomes You” sign and thought what the hell happened to Georgia? Just me and the logging trucks driving on some 2-lane mountain road linking I-65 & I-24. Fun times.

My favorite is when Google maps announce that it has found a "better" route - whatever that means - and unless I tell it in the next ten seconds that I want to stick with the route that I purposely chose- WHILE I'M FLIPPING DRIVING - it's going to just change my route to this new one it found.

The one and ONLY time I used Waze, I had that exact "I told everyone this shortcut" experience. I ended up in bumper to bumper traffic in the middle of a housing development and actually added 30 minutes to my drive than if I'd just gotten on the freeway. Plus, people were giving us all the evil eye for blocking their driveways. It was a nightmare.

The one and ONLY time I used Waze, I was so confused by the convoluted directions - get off this freeway- now travel 200 feet and get back on!- that I went straight in what turned out to be a left turn lane and ran into the side of the car to my right, which was turning left. 😅

That happened to me with WAZE. I took 4 different freeways to my destination in Minneapolis. When I used the Google Map to come back, it was only one freeway back. WAZE also gave me this shrill alarm noise when I drove past a highway construction project. I seriously thought I'd done something horrible to the car- then I checked WAZE. It had been warning me about the construction as I was passing it. Weird.

A couple of months ago Google Maps offered me time travel. For example, 10 minutes away from my destination, turning right (which in NZ, is more like your turning left) would get me there 12 minutes faster. It lasted for a few weeks, the time differences changed but it made my morning commute more interesting and kept me wondering all day long.

Google maps gets steadily better over the years, especially in rural settings, but I remember one trip on a winding mountain road where for some reason the google woman kept telling telling me to turn left onto non-existent roads. Made worse because there was a steep cliff on the left. Another time it landed me at the back fence of someone's property and insisted I was at my destination, and it wouldn't start over to get me around on the dirt roads to get to the front of the property. Climbing over people's fences and coming up from behind isn't safe in the country.

My favorite Apple Maps experience was when I asked it to take me to the airport, and I wasn’t specific enough. Instead of taking me to Departures or the parking lot, it took me to the other end of the airfield, with the runways and a tall barbed wire fence between me and the terminal. Good thing I always plan to get to the airport early. My 15-minute delay didn’t help my travel anxiety, but I got to the gate in plenty of time. Well, as long as you look at the map beforehand, plan out your route and have someone in the passengers seat to be constantly keeping track of where you’re going. With the downside to that being if you get lost you pull into a parking lot and figure it out for 15 minutes. That always happened at least once when we went on our family vacations back in the late 2000s when I was like 5.

The most important part of using Waze is doing what it says on the first calculation. After that the AI is sentient and bored and starts to screw with you for fun.

And THIS is why I'm co-pilot for my mom, dealing with Google Maps and its nightmares, and working my own way through the different paths it offers to me. 😂 Not always efficient, because the damn thing really likes to mess things up, often having us turn three times around a building for us to realize afterwards we could've just made a single turn the opposite way, but we manage pretty well! ✨

I used to keep a binder of all my Mapquest printouts so I'd have directions ready if I needed to go back to the same place again. I was happy to pitch that binder once I had GPS on my phone, but I gotta say this skit gave me some Mapquest nostalgia (never thought I'd say that....just shows how good FJ is!).

0:53. Love it. It appears the Brit was referring to the fact that America and the UK drive on opposite sides of the road; not merely that he was driving on the wrong side of said road. Analysis completed by ISTP.

So accurate! Waze often leads me on scenic “shortcuts” over country roads with hardly any asphalt on them that are probably not intended for regular traffic. Never knew those roads even existed in Germany…

I have an old-school garmin gps and it’s still my go-to. It gives clear directions exactly when you need it, doesn’t mute my podcast when it talks, and doesn’t take you on stupid side roads that theoretically save 30 seconds but actually save -30 minutes.

Apple Maps is the least frustrating because you just have invest the time to learn how to use it. You learn to put the trip and destination in your calendar app the night before so everything comes up automatically when you get in the car and you scope out the parking situation in Street View before you leave. You learn to put in pit stops so your drive time estimate doesn't get messed up and to set the arrival time as something that accommodates for traffic and pit stops. You learn how to toggle the voice on and off so it only talks during the parts of the trip you need help. And you learn to slow down when a turn's coming up in case it doesn't speak up til you're in the middle of the intersection and should've already made the turn.

It all started for me with Mapquest about 20 years ago. It was actually very helpful but you did have to plan ahead. Not all MBTI personalities are good with that. Then I was using Garmin, quite good but without any traffic warnings. These days it is WAZE for me and the part about taking the elite detours is 100% true. Have done so many times, some to my chagrin. It loves residential streets. This is one of your very best videos Frank!

That “hazard ahead” part on Apple Maps was SO accurate. Idk why the alert can’t pop up large for a sec, and then get much smaller so it doesn’t block the navigation that you’re trying to use.

How are these so freaking accurate! Only thing missing is when you accidentally touch a spot on the map that unknowingly adds a stop to your path that Google then proceeds to lead you to. Happened to me a couple of times on the way to work. 🤦‍♂️
