Tina ! All throughout my big band career, I patterned my lead alto playing after your Dad. He had his Bird approach to it that no one else had. I was influenced mostly from Bill Holman big band albums, but Joe had his own exciting style as a soloist as well. My Dad died from a freak airplane accident when I was 10 years old. It's something we never get over, but just learn to live with. My dad was also a wonderful Jazz player. Anyway, thank you for setting the story straight about your Joe. All the best, Jack Stafford

Great video. Great rhythm section - Pete Jolly, Monty Budwick, Mel Lewis. One of the alltime great records from the 50's is 'Best Coast Jazz' on EmRcy with Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Joe Maini (on alto), Walter Benton (tnr), Kenny Drew, G Morrow. On one side is the mind blowing 18 minute ballad "You Go To My Head' featuring mind blowing solos - first Joe Maini, then Benton & C Brown (whose 7 minute solo at the end is here on Utube someplace).

Shorty became an institution in the world of jazz, so I will add nothing but appreciation. But let me add my respect for onrrof Jazz's greatest drummers - Mel Lewis. So slick and understated that it was like being driven by a superb driver in a fast car, so good you couldn't notice the actual speed, just the rhythm and flow.

This is about the best record of Mel Lewis' talents I've ever seen. I asked Mel during a drink at Zardis when he was on a break with Red Mitchel. .. About teachers and practice. He told me, "I never practice AND NEVER HAVE, I just P L A Y."

Given the sound of the repeated note, Shorty is playing with the 1st and the 3rd valve, this video is running a halftone too fast/ high ;)
