It's a very good, well acted film. Watched it last night. Tells a good story about two popular, good looking young best friends in college. Who are both apparently straight. Both in relationships with girls, although the main character Franky is clearly not all that interested in his girlfriend. The two of them, after a long night of drinking at a party end up sharing a bed, and having a "sexual experience". You don't get to see it on screen for those wondering, although you do get to hear what both of them claimed happened after the fact. The other boy Ballas freaks out & leaves and this kind of forms the centerpiece of the film. The two directions both of them take after the "sexual experience". I really wouldn't classify this as a "Gay film" it's more of a film about a sexual identity crises, for lack of a better term. Both are confused by the incident, and you really get to see the main character Franky battle his confusion more so than the other boy, who is clearly trying hard to fight his feelings and black the moment out. If you're looking for a gay teen romance type film with lot's of intimacy & cute moments between two boys falling in love, then this isn't it. This is more about sexual identity, and trying to come to grips with it.

What the ending told me was that now alone Franky can stand on his own two feet with or without Ballas and that he is more solid on who he is and not codependent on Ballas anymore. Yes they can possibly be friends in the future however Franky has come into his own. That's how I read the ending with the flares.

I agree with JAY nade Frankie was too good to ballas. After all that he did to him, Frankie still wanted to reach out and be his friend. The whole school turned against him because of Ballas. He could have told everyone the truth but he didn't. I wished they made a sequel so I can see Ballas get his aaa whipped. Goodness I love this movie the acting was phenomenal.

So I just finished watching this movie a second time and noticed things I didn't before. I first watched this film a month ago and it was a lot to handle. Now viewing the film in a new light, this is definitely not a "coming out" story since no one really comes out, it's more a discovering sexual identity or having sexual ambiguity. Franky and Ballas have been best friends for years and I believe they had began to develop feelings of attraction to one another but didn't know how to say it and rather showed it in their actions. Always goofy around with each other and doing dumb things together. Ballas mentions sex a lot and having it like 6 times with his girlfriend, as though trying to convince to himself that he is straight. Also, Ballas' influence/encouragement in the beginning for Franky to have sex with his "girlfriend", I want to believe that it was more for Ballas' reassurance, that if Franky has a girlfriend and his taken then Ballas cannot act on his feelings and they can both continue to fit into typical niche of heterosexual, best friends, jock, popular etc. As for what happens in Franky's bedroom, all we know is that BJ took place and it took them both by surprise, claiming they were drinking heavily (which is true) but the freak over just a BJ, I think Ballas wanted to take it further but scared himself at that desire and figure it was better run and ignore the truth about his sexuality. Franky's father certainly plays a role in the film and the understanding of sexual identity, he loved and still loves his ex-wife, but it's different now. Exploring new feelings and sexuality later in life doesn't' mean a person was always gay and hiding it or someone turned them gay. They simply never explored that side of their sexuality until the right moment/person came along and showed them that it's okay and yes, scary/beautiful/exciting/real but still okay. He doesn't judge his son, despite whatever his son previously or might still feel towards him. That final conversation they had was so critical to Frankly and provides some insight to the future of his character. Ballas' sister Natasha, she's an interesting character and complex secret friendship/relationship prior to the story adds yet another layer. Franky emerging sexual identity is a spectrum and doesn't fit into a single box. I find it surprising that they knew each other before the start of film, cause they didn't act like it at all. It was more heartbreaking to find out how their friendship came to an end, sexual assault at a party that she was suppose to go with Franky. I could understand her anger at him, for speaking to her after everything happened and ignored her as she become ostracized and slut-shamed by classmates. I'm glad she didn't blame him for situation that resulted in her assault because he didn't attended the party, that would have been unfair - because he nor she ever expected that to happen. Admittedly, I was surprised how quickly they were "hooking up" after he was falling out with friends, which leads me to believe that they did possible have a secret romantic relationship/friendship. He admitted he didn't go to be with Ballas, which shows were Franky's feelings has always been with Ballas. I enjoyed the fact that Natasha doesn't push for answers regarding Franky's sexuality and accepts him as is, and they support each other. Also, enjoyed that she called BS on her brother claims about being the one who received the BJ, she has likely always suspected her brother's sexual ambiguity but keeps that to herself. Ballas reaction to their friendship/relationship is clearly one of jealousy, surprise and maybe "protective brother", he stiffness at the mere mention of them hanging out shows he is bottling up emotions. The beating that Ballas gives Franky is a turning point, and that's the one side of the story we don't see unfortunately. What is Ballas feeling? thinking? What is his side of everything that has happened? He watch him go from best friend to silent complicitence to tormentor, but never understand how he is managing things? That's one side of the story that is absolutely worth telling and showing. Definitely not easy watching two friend fight each other, but it is clearly built frustration and feeling that Ballas can no longer contain, perhaps he is more mad at himself for not being brave enough to do more and say. But I am curious, Why did Ballas tell his girlfriend to begin with? They agreed not to say anything and Franky didn't look to being spilling that secret any time soon, what could have changed? That hallway scene was everything, Franky visibly bruised and battered comes out strong and more confident about everything around him, maybe there are no definitive answers but there is clarity. While Ballas who has lost nothing and faced little, he is nervous, terrified and intimidated, the way he continues to stare for Franky as he walks away shows the longing he still has and the long journey he has to go through to get a place he feels comfortable. His girlfriend can see things clearly with Ballas and how he truly feels, she walks away and Ballas doesn't do or say anything, cause he can't really hide it anymore, his inner emotions are coming to the surface. The end - I enjoyed because it was reminiscent of an earlier scene, I think it signals that their could still be a chance of their friendship but any romantic possibilities "flew out the window" especially after gas station fight. It also signals maybe romantic optimism for Natasha and Franky -- a chance for everyone to start anew and from a place of honesty.

same thoughts! and seeing the looks on the faces of franky’s exgf and ballas’ gf on that last locker scene is just so satisfying. like the look of regret on franky’s ex seeing how franky was able to come out strong and now has tash with him and was probably thinking it shouldve been her had she stayed with him through it all, and that “oh i see…” look on ballas’ gf when ballas’ longing eyes followed franky as he went by them, i love how there’s a lot of meaning in their looks alone, really great actors! and I wouldn’t mind this having a spinoff showing what goes in ballas’ head before, during, and after all of this. he must be dying inside for not just losing his bestfriend/potential special someone and let alone seeing that someone with his own sister with pure intentions. ugh such a good movie

Great Job! I saw this movie twice and i loved it each time. This is a film that i can't stop thinking about even if i tried. The story is so orignal that it sets itself apart from others movies similer to it, in the fact that it doesn't put its characters in one per say box but helps peope accept that its ok to be confuse and not to rush to judgment of who you are at a particular time or moment. And thats why I love it so much. And Josh Wiggins and Darren Mann performance adds to layered story of friendship and relationships. If you haven't check this film out please do it has alot to offer.

That is my worry as well. I will say this: generally the tone of the trailer belies the tone of the ending. Not always, but I have found that if it is presented as somewhat upbeat it will usually end sad, and vice versa. I don't know if it is because of a "surprise factor" the filmmakers want, but it has happened a bit. I really hope that this one, being as new as it is, will be more of a happier ending.

Frankie deep down loves Ballas...you can clearly see this at the end where Frankie returns Ballas Bike and necklace, indicating despite what Ballas has put him through, (beating the crap out of Frankie) he is still wanting to mend things with him. Ballas is so caught up with keeping his reputation that he doesn't even allow himself to explore his inner self Desires to truly be himself. Frankie is a remarkable character. Even though Ballas went down on Frankie, Ballas tells everyone at school it was the other way around...and this is the narrative that Frankie leaves as is in order to save Ballas' reputation. However, life must go on with Frankie and so he dates Ballas sister...probably to buy time in the hopes that Ballas will one day come around into being opened with Frankie. Does anyone agree with me on this??? BTW, I love this movie...it's basically a movie about coming out, without really coming out

Am I the only one who thought originally that the movie ended in a sad way? I thought that Franky was saying that he was fine without Ballas by shooting the flares. On top of that was the hallway scene where he confronted Ballas with confidence and he was left in a sad state. Since the movie ended so abruptly without a complete ending, I never really got the message until I read some of the comments in this section. I think I’ve just got a case of being an airhead. Anyways I really liked the movie, not so much Ballas but Frankys feelings and his growth were lovely to watch.

I just had so much hatred for Ballas after this film, betraying and deeply hurting his best friend in this dirty way. There would certainly have been a much better way to deal with this situation. Sure, it would have been horror for him if his sport mates had noticed this, but the way he dealt with it was simply wrong. But I'm glad that Franky has developed such a strong personality to the end, and even managed to get a new friend.

My beef with this movie: The ending is so abrupt that I cannot bring myself to like this movie. I have no problem with open ending movies. In fact, I like them as long as they don't end up leaving feeling WTF. Also, I get the message the movie is trying to convey, it's a fresh take on a cliched plotline. But you can't just leave such a well crafted story with such a random, nonsensical, ending that didn't seem to do the hour-plus build up any justice. It's artsy but has no substance. also SPOILER below I just don't like the "best friend" character. He has no redeeming arc, he's just a coward in the end. That scene at the convenient store parking lot ruined his character for me, and his character development literally stopped right there. The sister is cool, but their story also didn't resolve in any satisfying manner.
@thatamericanbritishbloke5672
@thatamericanbritishbloke5672 5 жыл бұрын
Caden Morse ~My thoughts exactly. The film had so many plot threads and none of them were resolved in the end, except the main character’s relationship with his father but since that wasn’t the focal point of the story it didn’t allow for a satisfying ending. Could have been better. And yeah, Ballas was just a very dislikable character who turned on his best friend over a decision he made and regretted, but Franky was okay with. He developed in the wrong direction and just got progressively worse throughout the film.
@dwb1103
@dwb1103 5 жыл бұрын
I think the whole point of the parking lot scene was to show his character had not developed or learned anything from the experience. He was developed from the start as an alpha male and to preserve that image betrayed his friend. The main character was the one who changed from the experience. This scene was the catalyst where he not only found peace with himself but his father as well. His final confrontation with his “best friend” after this was brilliant when few words were said but it nonverbally expressed so much.
@markvanglabbeek1653
@markvanglabbeek1653 5 жыл бұрын
Caden Morse I don’t agree with you that the character of Ballas didn’t develop throughout the film. Actually the film shows for me that Ballas has a lot more problems to cope with his sexuality and identity than Franky. Ballas is stuck between his deep and loving friendship with Franky and the expectations from his social circle. In the last scenes of the film I got the idea that Ballas regrets what he did but he is not yet ready to talk about it and acknowledge the fact that he feels something for Franky
@dwb1103
@dwb1103 5 жыл бұрын
I agree he was stuck between two different loyalties but choosing the safer one to me indicated he was not willing or ready to change. I will say at the end I do think it was hinted at that perhaps he was viewing the situation from a new perspective. His placement of his swim goggles on his face were used throughout the film to symbolize shutting out the world and his state of denial. Interestingly at the end, when he’s in the pool and staring off into the sky, the googles are not present as they were for every other scene when he wanted to escape his thoughts.

I wouldn't consider that. Since it left us pretty unsatisfied with the ending. Spoilers: See, His dad is gay, and his story was someone asked him for a coffee, his dad saw the look in his face and that he was interested in him, so he declined and said no since he has a wife, a son(Franky) and a daughter. They eventually ended up together and Franky's parents divorced. Franky asked his dad if he regret declining him(Brandon, in which is now his husband), His father said no, since it's all part of the process. The ending, Franky gave a gift he received from his birthday to Ballas, which is a Dog Tag that says "Love You Forever", It lightened Ballas up, and he went for a swim, (we're never showed what he did to the tag) Franky shots the Flare gun in the neighborhood, Ballas saw this and Smiled(indicating he has feelings on him?) then the movie ends. unsatisfying right? Based on my observation and with the context given, I assume that Ballas *loves* Franky and keeps himself away from him since he feels like this is wrong, like "I hate that I love you" thing-ish. I want part 2 tbh. also, poor Natasha, she was great.

Ei, você do outro lado. Explora as possibilidades. Esclareça a cabeça. As pessoas serão elas, e você, quem é. Você existe. Estou torcendo por você!

This film was about closeted cowardly friend who paralyzed by fear couldn’t see a good friend who even after being betrayed never told the truth and burden the ridicule from their peers instead. But that’s nothing and happens all the time as men begin to sexually blossom with curiosity. The part that was cruel was the assault on his friend even when he did nothing to him.
