Today it's Maestro Jansons' 74th anniversary. Happy Birthday, Maestro, and thank you for the music!
Mariss Jansons was born in Riga (Latvia), on January 14th, 1943, in a family of musicians: his father was a renowned conductor himself, and his mother was a mezzosoprano. He began his musical career studying violin, piano and conducting at the Leningrad Conservatory (now, Sankt Petersburg Conservatory). He was discovered by Herbert von Karajan, after winning second prize in a contest for young conductors. He completed his education with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna and Herbert von Karajan in Salzburg. Soon, he was to become the latter's assistant.
Mariss Jansons was chief conductor of the Oslo Philarharmonic Orchestra (1979-2000), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1997-2004), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (2004-2015) and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (2003-present).
He conducted 3 New Year's Concerts in Vienna: in 2006, 2012 (my all-time favourite) and 2016.
Mariss Jansons is a prolific recording artist: his discography comprises many prizewinning recordings, including a Grammy for his account of Shostakovich's 13th Symphony. He has recently been nominated for another Grammy Award, this time for his live recording of Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony, along with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. The winners are to be announced in February. So, good luck, Maestro!
Mariss Jansons is an honorary member of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna and of the Royal Academy of Music in London. Among his numerous awards and distinctions, it is worth mentioning: the Hans-von-Bulow Medal, received from the Berlin Philharmonic, the Golden Medal of Honour, awarded to him by the City of Vienna, the Honorary Cross for Science and Arts, received from the State of Austria. He was elected Artist of the Year (2006) and received the ECHO Klassik Award in 2007 and 2008. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, for his life's achievement as a conductor, and the same year, the German Federal President Joachim Gauck honoured him with the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class. In 2015, Mariss Jansons was named ''Commandeur des Arts et Lettres'' by the French Ministry of Culture.
Here he is, along with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks), interpreting Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.

Sorely missed, indeed. Actually, I cannot think of any other conductor to do his "job" with so much love and passion. To him, Music was not a mere matter of "technique" and "accuracy", it was all about feeling and conveying the feeling to the audience. Thank you for your kind comment. Melania

I've been crying since the announcement of his passing away, yesterday afternoon. Never before (or after!) have I seen anyone breathing music as Maestro Jansons did. So much so, that they just melted into one piece... He will be remembered for his huge artistry, as well as for his humility (in the good way). Rest in peace, my favourite Maestro! The one and only...

I have only discovered Marriss Jansons earlier this year and instantly he's one of my most favorite conductors ever. I'm absolutely devestated to hear about his passing. R.I.P. Maestro Jansons.

So was I. I still can't/won't accept his passing... He was - and will forever be - my favourite conductor. Not only was he a conductor by profession, but he was also a conductor by vocation, an ARTIST who breathed music and lived for it. Always grateful for his talent, musicianship and generosity.

@@musicadicuore Such an accurate description but what I liked about Jansons is that unlike so many music conductors such as Karajan, Boehm, Bernstein, Muti, and other Jansons never either promoted himself nor he indulged himself in seeking any fame or publicity. He would rather be humble and generous that to be a prima donna. And like you said the world has indeed lost a true and great talent.
@musicadicuore
@musicadicuore 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheLastOfTheFinest80 I fully agree with you. Suffice it for me to think of such (fragments of) newspaper headlines published after his passing: ''Le chef parfait'', ''modest genius of conducting'' , ''the last gentleman'', ''a great conductor and a humble man'', ''the conductor with the sweetest smile'', ''the conductor everyone loved'', to mention just a few. He will be forever remembered for his complete dedication to music.

As a non-Latvian and someone who didn't study music (yet, who loves it enormously), I can say you've got all the reasons in the world to be proud of your country: however little it might be (geographically speaking), it has become an enormous provider of great ARTISTS. Among them (and perhaps, the most important), Maestro Jansons, whom I absolutely adore... Glad you liked my video and the description attached to it. Warm greetings to you, too! Melania

Hi Mei Salerno, my hat to you and all my respect to your "little country's performers". My late mother was a first violin with the Montreal Symphonic Orchestra in her younger days and I grew up with the appreciation of the talent and performance of all the well known orchestras. May God bless you and your country, Ciao, L (from USA)
